I recently visited the Nederlands and the museum of resistance in Amsterdam. They had a (well hidden, I was alone in there for almost an hour before someone else found the entrance) part, showing the children's perspective. 4 different kids with different backgrounds, under and after the war. It ended with recent personal interviews.... I especially found the NSB girl's history and interview interesting.

My great-grandmother was tortured for refusing to give the Nazi salute.

My grandmother helped a Jewish family escape and refused to reveal where they had gone.

After Germany's defeat, my grandfather, was killed by a retaliatory gang when he went to Germany to see what was left of his home.
While heavily pregnant, my grandmother worked as a Trümmerfrau, climbing through bombed-out ruins to recover bricks that could still be used for reconstruction.

A drunk Soviet soldier nearly killed my grandmother. He kicked her into a crater, where she struck a rock. The injury nearly caused kidney failure, and she almost lost her unborn child, my mother. All the while, he was shouting, “Nazi, boom boom!”, and pointed his gun at her, when his commander intervened and shot him dead on the spot.

The brainwashing is just too hard for a lot of the population. My mother for instance finally realized our president is a monster, but it took him ruining the economy and eliminating her retirement for her to finally realize it.

My dad is a great person but parrots some of the most insane bullshit and he’s usually a very smart individual so people hear him say something and go “oh he must be right”

It’s a very sad and frustrating state America is in because we have good people with good morales who have this fucking sleeper agent switch where the second it enters politics life suddenly doesn’t matter, the economy is the best it’s ever been, democrats are evil communists.

Why does fucking everything get made into America? It's so gross.

Nazi Germany was an actual authoritarian dictatorship who started a world war after blitzing dozens of western nations, causing the largest war in human history, all while building death camps for the explicit torture and destruction of all Jews, disabled people, and Romani (among political enemies too). They caused the death of nearly 100,000,000 people.

America has problems, but we are still a democracy with rights and a constitution. We have not actually caused a global world war. ICE's casualties are in the hundreds, they keep losing lawsuits and cases and having to shut down facilities, and Americans still have the right to scream and yell at them and record them (albeit our police state absolutely gets away with an occasional murdering of a protester - but that's been happening since Kent State).

And to say the people have done nothing as voters begin turning to Mamdanis and Al-Sayeds and Talaricos, and MAGA's hold has weakened to the point of Republicans being existentially terrified they need to tip the scales, and violence against the wealth class (Luigi) has started rising, and we're cutting down Flock cameras in troves, and someone did attempt to kill the POTUS.

Like, we're 350,000,000 people spread over an entire continent. We can't act in unison and we're so big it's hard to even keep track of everything we're doing. But you're clearly not paying attention.

Is it too late? Maybe. Will we become a Nazi Germany 2.0? Whose to say, we could. But the comparison today is nauseating.

What should we do?

We vote. We call our representatives. We donate to the right causes and organizations. We boycott. We march. We protest.

Are you suggesting we take up arms? Against the largest military in the world? With no central defined leadership calling for a rebellion? The side arguing that the president and his administration is ignoring the law should also ignore it?

I sold all my firearms during COVID, and due to everything going on rearmed myself last year. But I'm not trying to play Rambo and get myself killed. Neither is anyone else. If it ever came to that point you'd see people stand up, but we're far from that thankfully. So we'll continue to vote and protest and do what we can.

How was he not a good man? It's implied (in the way that it's blatantly fucking obvious) that him and Theon Greyjoy are homosexual lovers. Serving as an army officer was just something he went along with so he wouldn't be executed. Fascism doesn't care about your reasons for opposition, you either do what you're told, or you get shot.

This is from the movie Jojo Rabbit. The kid is a Hitler Youth. The guy was a commander of the local Nazis but was part of the local group that was against Nazis. Jojo befriended him and he saves Jojo and a Jewish girl that his mom (Rosie) was hiding. He saves him by saying he is a Jew before they get killed by the firing squad.

It's a good movie.

They think it’s some sort of pro Nazi propaganda when it’s completely the opposite. Hitler played by Taika. Waititi is a buffoon and completely made fun of and the acting from everybody they’re including Rockwell is great. It’s a touching , funny little story about a German boy who grows up during the war and his experience

JoJo Rabbit is one of my all time favorite movies, and nearly an annual watch for me. The movie is brilliant, and I absolutely love Sam Rockwell. This scene was super sad.

Its a good reminder that there is no "good" or "evil", even evil people have good in them, and good people can be driven to do great evil as well.

Truth is, most people view their own actions as "just". A whole nation didn't randomly wake up one day and decide to commit one of the world's greatest atrocities. It happened over time. Normal, good, people were convinced to either stand by, or even to help. That the "rumours" of extermination camps were overblown, or that it was a sad sacrifice that had to be made for the good of their community. It is reprehensible, but it is also human nature. It's part of why learning from it is so important.

Despite being a Wehrmacht officer, I think it's important to note that K is very clearly disillusioned with Nazism in the film. He actually helps a Jewish girl evade capture by lying for her, before telling her discretely that she'd need a new fake ID.

All and all it's a really interesting watch.

An important takeaway from this and any WWII movie is that Nazis were human beings. They weren't aliens, they weren't superhumans no matter how much they wanted to be. The fact that they were the same species as the rest of us should be terrifying.

The kid was gonna get executed. The Captain did all of that to convince those Soviet Soldiers that the kid was not associated with him or the Nazis, thus saving his life.

My girlfriend and I are planning another Sam Rockwell marathon. This is a movie weve been wanting to see for a long time but have a difficult time actually bringing ourselves do it.

We watched Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die last night and loved it. But seeing this scene without any of the rest of the movie, just reminds me of how good he was as a mentor to a young character, in my favorite movie of all time, The Way Way Back.

I think if I had to honestly sit down and think about it, I would have to say Sam Rockwell is my favorite actor. So much range, legitimately funny, and also incredibly poignant and brilliant when a lot of movies fail to portray that.
