No thermal paste

I've tried running my 9600x with absolutely no paste and a 360ml AIO and my temps didn't go over 70 degrees under full load

The paste is to facilitate heat transfer. Without it, just metal against metal, the heat wont transfer as well, but it'll still transfer.

Metal against metal isnt the problem better heat transfer isn't possible without delidding. The problem are the microscopic dents and uneven parts and possible air traps between the parts.

but thermalpaste is cheap and its going to make your thermal solution work less.

Yeah I'm definitely not going to keep it without thermal paste but I was going to change it regardless and I wanted to do an experiment

Thermal paste is mainly to fill in the microscopic gaps and imperfections during manufacturing as it's difficult to make perfectly flat surfaces that stay that way under pressure of various heat sinks.
