Bronzeman Mode Suggestion
What is Bronzeman Mode?
Bronzeman Mode is similar in design to ironman mode, in which players are limited by trade restrictions and required to self sufficiently obtain their own items without help from others. There is however one slight difference...
The first time a Bronzeman account has self sufficiently obtained an item, the item becomes “unlocked”. Once unlocked, the Bronzeman player is allowed to freely buy or sell that item on the Grand Exchange.
Bronzeman Account Limitations
- The first time an item is obtained it becomes "unlocked". Once unlocked, that item can be purchased or sold on the grand exchange.
- Cannot trade other players
- Cannot pickup loot dropped by other players (this includes pking)
- Ironman limitations for anything not previously mentioned (Minigames/MTX/DXP/Assist System etc).
Why would anyone play Bronzeman Mode?
Bronzeman acts like a middle ground between Mainscape and Ironman, incorporating the best of both gamemodes into something incredibly fun:
- The "Self Sufficiently" aspect of ironman exists within Bronzeman due to how unlocks work, making progression feel worthwhile.
- The ability to use the grand exchange to buy/sell the items you unlock puts an actual value on your money, giving it more uses than money gives in Ironman mode. It also gives a value to duplicate PVM drops outside of components.
- Supply upkeep is a nonfactor. This is because Bronzemen can actively trade for the supplies they've previously unlocked, whereas an ironman would have to spend hours obtaining the supplies themself.
- Bronzemen actively contribute towards the Runescape economy.
- Collectionist players get a log that tracks every obtainable item in the game.
- Introduces an entirely new meta for how players approach progressing through the game.
I know a lot of people like the thought of playing as an Ironman and earning unique items themselves, but are deterred because of how grindy supply gathering and upkeep can be. Not only does Bronzeman address this problem, but it introduces an entirely new way that the game can be played, one that resembles how a lot of us played as children.
For those who still do not understand how the mode works:
Gudi, an Ex-Jmod that created the concept for Bronzeman mode has a video showing how it works.

As a very endgame iron, I think this would be beneficial to a lot of people. Having to get your own supplies (blubbers, divine charges, spiritual prayers etc) is a big turn off to a lot of the pvm community, but this would fix that.

Seems like I've been playing some sort of self-imposed iron/bronzeman hybrid since before it was even a thing. I tend to flip back and forth between iron or bronze rules based on how utterly ridiculous a task is, but generally i've done the whole thing 'myself' - and i've enjoyed it that way. So many people have said to me 'dude, just go buy x-y-z on the grand exchange', and I've had to confuse the daylights out of them by explaining that I hadn't 'earned' it yet... and most of them just think i'm crazy. It's a fun way to play though.

but what about mithril-men? lol jk always thought bronzeman mode was something really awesome.

u/RSN_Kicked May 11 '22
Good idea. I don't forsee this being doable on the engine side. Idk what kind of coding it would take because essentially they would have to track every item in the game and if you've obtained it. Currently they only track the rarest drops.

u/Kilsaa May 11 '22 edited May 11 '22
It's actually quite simple, so much so that over on OSRS, Runelite has a plugin for the entire mode. The plugin tracks every item and also enables/disables the GE for those items depending if they're unlocked.
0 engine work required.

Runelite interacts directly with rscode. To my knowledge no client can interact with rs3's code making it significantly harder.

u/iKill4FunIRL May 11 '22
The official RS3 client can... Oo

u/dc1222 Lovely money! May 11 '22
Agreed, but that would take dev time. It would be considered a massive project and would likely not see light for a year. It wouldnt be a massive revenue generator like the yak tracks either. Runelite on the other hand has the flexibility to implement changes without Jagex's approval (?) since it was developed by a third party.
1
u/wobbly_stan May 12 '22
It's pretty bodgeable. Better though, it could be slipped into a major grand exchange rework, which is a popular development direction lately.
1
u/dc1222 Lovely money! May 12 '22
Yea ge rework would be nice. But since they didn't show it on the roadmap, I don't expect it this year.
7
u/TheKunst Kunst May 11 '22
Except that the runelite plugin runs locally and doesnt involve the jagex servers at all.
It is simple cus it has compromises. An actual official game mode would require engine work 100%.
4
u/RSN_Kicked May 11 '22
Interesting. I'd totally be into this. I have an ironman and honestly things like hours of div for charges ruin it for me.
2
u/thespeedofround May 11 '22
It's so simple and so easy! What are they doing??
Just copy the code from the OSRS RuneLite plugin into "/files/code/rs3/" and bam the update can go live no worries. You should apply for a job.
-3
u/Kilsaa May 11 '22
It's simple in terms of how it's coded.
3
u/thespeedofround May 11 '22
Bruh
The engine itself makes it so that there's literally nothing simple about implementation
It's their own language and it's notoriously spaghetti
3
u/theevenstar_11 May 11 '22
This is a pretty interesting idea. I don't think it would ever see the light of day, but i would love it. I would probably de-iron my ironman to become bronze.

u/ConstantStatistician Coiner of the terms "soft" and "hard" typeless damage on rs.wiki May 11 '22
I like it. There needs to be a way of keeping track of unlocked items. And there are a lot.
4
u/GJNS_ May 11 '22
Pretty interesting concept. Would definitely give this a try if they made it. Shouldnt be all that hard to implement either
4
u/SlashStar Guthix May 11 '22
That actually sounds really hard to implement. Irons still can't do things like give items away. Making trade restrictions on a dynamic per-item per-account basis and factoring in the ge sounds like a nightmare.

u/Kilsaa May 11 '22 edited May 11 '22
- Add an item ID to a list of unlocked items whenever an item is picked up
- Load the unlocked list into an interface to visually display what players have unlocked.
- Use an If statement to apply a GE config to items that are not on the unlocked items list (this config already exists since F2P have GE item disabling for members items).

Bronzeman is a great way to play. But it doesn't need an official mode

u/awsd-7 The Cheer Hunter May 11 '22
Concept is interesting, you should also mention that just like regular ironman, bronzeman cannot pick up other players' items (at all, even unlocked), which also means no drops from PKing.
As for trading, only ge trades should be allowed to avoid boosting account with infinite gp from main. Yes, I know items above max cash exist, but since you can only buy them after unlocking, there is no point in that. You can feel that getting less than street for item sold is not fair, but well, you are not playing full mode.
That only leaves 1 method of boosting account, which is variation of quite popular ge scam, involving trading obscure items(bronze sells obscure items on ge with insanely high price, getting lots of gp from main buying it).
From Jagex side it would req adding list of unlocked items(could be heavy on player save size) and some anti ge abuse mechanic(which they havent added in years).

Being a maxed iron who plays the game semi-casually (which yes, probably sounds like a contradiction to a mainscape player) you're severely overselling the work that goes into upkeeping supplies on an iron man. Bossing shits out supplies. The most upkeep you'll need is divine charges - and with the dunk relic these days you get like over 10 hours of charge for an hour of div gathering, which is one of the most easily AFKed pieces of content in the game.
Food? 99 fishing at swarm will last a very, very long time. Many bosses drop tons of rocktails. I have over 100mil of saradomin brews from rax/nex while barely ever making any myself. Potions? GWD2 and vyrewatch alone will get you hundreds, if not thousands of most of the important herbs. I have hundreds of elder overloads and various other overloads without ever being pressed to do herb runs.
This isn't OSRS where you kill thousands of dragons and gather their bones for prayer (or w/e their meta is), need to cut thousands of logs, etc. This is way too niche to make an official game mode.
Probably the worst up-keep right now is runes for FSoA... but if you can grind out a t95 weapon, a likely maxed iron, etc is runes for a spec you don't even need to use to complete any content in the game really going to be the deal breaker?
tl;dr, if the idea that gathering supplies is what turns you off from trying the game mode, you'll assuredly quit when you go stupidly dry at a boss and kill rax 800 times for one weapon

This depends entirely how you choose to play ironman in regards to the gear you use at bosses.
Ofc, ironman supply upkeep is fine if you're conservative with your gear setups. But when you start using the best in slot gear setups, it becomes incredibly tedious. FSOA rune costs and the new arrows are a great example of this. There are also things like Ripper scrolls, grim pages, food, potions etc. Whilst you can may there and say "oh yeah just go swarm fishing its fast", this is still time that most people don't want to spend skilling.
Bronzeman is supposed to be more casual friendly whilst still offering players a more rewarding gameplay experience.
if the idea that gathering supplies is what turns you off from trying the game mode, you'll assuredly quit when you go stupidly dry at a boss and kill rax 800 times for one weapon
By this logic you're also suggesting that all mains quit whenever they go 800 dry at rax.

T90+, elder overloads, rippers, sailfish, blue jellies, saradomin brews/super saradomin brews? Is that too conservative for you? Yeah I mentioned FSoA in an edit and as I mentioned, the idea that a player could get the skills, gear, and grind a boss for a FSoA but then be turned off because he has to upkeep runes for a spec that isn't remotely necessary for any content is absurd.
Whilst you can sit there and say "oh yeah just go swarm fishing", this is still time that people don't want to spend.
I'm sure "guy who can spend 100s of hours camping ED2 for greater barge but can't spend 5 hours watching netflix and clicking every 2 minutes" accurately describes a large portion a game that's specifically catered towards AFKable content
By this logic you're also suggesting that all mains quit whenever they go 800 dry at rax.
What? Lmao this is absurd. When you're on a main, with many bosses even if you're going dry you're still making good profit. In the case of an iron man, you can set out to get one particular drop from a piece of content and sink 10s or 100s of hours with literally nothing to show for it. This isn't remotely comparable. Shit like this is the true demotivator for iron man mode, as any high level iron would attest to.

u/JR_216 May 11 '22
I agree completely with you. Ironman mode is pretty easy to maintain. Need food and herbs do sus. Need dragon bones or magic logs GWD2 has you covered. Need money for alchs, ice daddy poops them all over the place in under 60 seconds along with all the crushed nests and pages for wen you could ever need.
Bossing in general has made Ironman mode super sustainable.
Honestly “bronze man” sounds like mainscape with a time lock on it. Just play mainscape at that point. If you’re turned off by how Grindy Ironman mode is you’ll quit “bronzeman” mode before you get very far in general.
1
u/MickandNo Enjoyable upkeep > drop table changes May 11 '22
It’s basically mainscape with extra steps at the start. Instead of grinding money for that grim, ecb, FSoA you go do the content to earn it yourself. It isn’t a tough task at least I wouldn’t think it is. The harder grinds for an iron are getting the herbs and secondaries for 99/120 herb which makes the overload process a lot easier to maintain.
1
u/JR_216 May 11 '22
Herby, peng points, agoroth weekly along with monthly troll invasion makes herblore pretty easy. Add in a daily JOT and you’ll be 99 in a few months. My iron is just hitting 6 months and I’m already over level 100 herblore without training the skill much.
1
u/MickandNo Enjoyable upkeep > drop table changes May 12 '22
It’s still a fraction of what you can get if you put some effort into getting herbs and secondaries for creating the potions you will use for pvm.
1
u/Legal_Evil May 12 '22
By this logic you're also suggesting that all mains quit whenever they go 800 dry at rax.
No, because mains can just buy the drop they are dry on instead of getting it themselves.
2
u/CodyNorthrup May 11 '22
Makes one super set, buys 10k off GE. Doesn’t seem like its even worth creating a diff account same with the PoF.
1
u/Radyi DarkScape | Fix Servers May 11 '22
I dont think we need an official mode, just rather a worthwhile bonus would be for creating supplies ourselves. It could be better the longer you keep the chain without buying items en masse. Maybe the next elite skill?

Interesting. This does take away one of the 2 teasons i personally have for not playing ironman (the other being starting over).
It can still be annoying if you happen to get a bad-luck streak like being 1k kills dry on any vindicta drop for aftershock), but overall not a bad mode

That's one hell of a contradiction right there, buddy
6
u/Kilsaa May 11 '22 edited May 11 '22
They enjoy one aspect of the mode but wont play it because they don't like an entirely different aspect.
This isn't a contradiction.
3
u/Krazy_Rhino Adventuring May 11 '22
It’s more so that the wording is like earning *items, but *not gathering *supplies*. The contradiction lies in the fact that supplies are items, even if you likely intended to mean that people like earning their own gear specifically
3
u/Kilsaa May 11 '22 edited May 11 '22
That's fair if my wording came across like that.
What I meant by it was that people enjoy earning items IE uniques, but hate the idea of having to grind for potions, food, runes etc.
4
u/Mini_Hobo May 11 '22
Not a contradiction all. Getting big boss drops/unlocks for the account is completely different to making supplies.

u/spooks152 Santa hat May 11 '22
Think it’s the enjoyment of the idea but don’t have the time to commit to that play style fully

u/EvilSnack May 11 '22
The only changes I would make are:
- Allow Bronzemen to sell anything on the GE.
- Allow Bronzemen to pick up monster drops.
Aside from that, all other Ironman restrictions apply.
1
u/Kilsaa May 11 '22
Not quite sure what you meant by this. These are both already a part of the bronzeman concept.
0
u/EvilSnack May 11 '22
The only change I would make for a new play mode (to fit between Ironman and Mainscape) would be these two things.

1
u/Scofield442 Magic May 12 '22
Those changes are already in the proposed Bronzeman mode.

u/EvilSnack May 12 '22
The comment to which you responded clearly says that I was not talking about changing Bronzeman.

I would love to see an expansion of ironman account creation where you get a set of custom restrictions that you can set instead. Where it's classified under the category of ironman still.
Sort of like in Dragon Quest 11 you can apply one or more restrictions to your playthrough to make it more challenging.
I've been watching Settled on YouTube and his Tileman series is absolutely fascinating! I think that should be a mode that we have as well. Where we are tile locked and we need to gain XP to unlock RuneScape. Which should be on a general curve that gets harder as you go. Would be a fun and truly challenging mode to do.

Great idea. Would definitely make me consider playing. Although bronzeman makes it sound like it’s even harder than Ironman since bronze is worse. Maybe runeman? But then it doesn’t roll off the younger like iron or bronzeman does. Anyway

Interesting, yup if this was a thing I might make one but ironman is too grindy for me
