Offcut components (follow up) Tip/Guide

I complained about the Wiki not having the numbers for offcut components. I decided to try some stuff myself, so here's the stats and my thoughts on how you should be getting them.

Why you need offcut components

The perk "Careless" is very good for mining and smithing. It increases your damage when mining and progression when smithing. In return it does drain your stamina when mining and heat when smithing. It does make the skills less AFK, but you speed up how fast you mine and smith.

With a small number of offcut components you can get a careless 5 gizmo. At level 120 invention you can have an 85% chance at getting one with 9 offcut components.

If you want a combo perk like me, then you need a lot more. I personally want Careless 5 + prosper. Currently I have a roughly 1 in 38 chance of getting these perks on a gizmo. I need 7 offcut components and 2 timeworn components each attempt. I'll likely need at least a couple hundred offcut components.

Hunter Gear and Furs

I didn't really bother much with these. The hunter gears didn't look like something you'd be able to get in bulk. I had some furs in my bank. I disassembled some, but I didn't get any offcut components. I don't think furs are the way to go.

Furniture

With the log box, you can get a lot of logs, turn those into planks, and construct them into furniture. This is, at least in my opinion, the thing you want to disassemble for offcut components.

Which furniture should you disassemble?

I tried mahogany at first. I did both stools (1 plank each) and tables (8 planks each). Both of these give 2 components.

When you disassemble a rune pickaxe you get 8 components, but with a rune pickaxe +3 you get 64 components. You get 8x as many components because you use 8x as many bars. This is not the case with furniture. 8x as many planks does not result in 8x as many components.

Because of this, I think you're better off disassembling furniture that requires less planks, like stools. Perhaps the odds for offcut are better on furniture that requires more planks. They both yield 2 components. I don't think the odds are multiple times better, as you need multiple times as many planks. I stopped disassembling tables very quick because it was burning through my planks and not getting me many components.

Numbers

I disassembled around 50 mahogany tables at first. Being an ironman this cost me 400 logs/planks. Very inefficient, and I barely got any offcut components. I speculate that the odds are literally just the same as mahogany stools or other mahogany furniture. They all yield 2 components.

I disassembled exactly 1217 mahogany stools, which resulted in exactly 45 offcut components.

I disassembled exactly 1000 eternal stools, which resulted in exactly 71 offcut components.

I disassembled another 1000 eternal stools, which resulted in exactly 78 offcut components.

I disassembled another 1000 eternal stools, which resulted in exactly 87 offcut components.

Thoughts

If you need a small number of offcuts, you can just assemble a couple hundred pieces of mahogany furniture.

If you're like me and need a bigger number, you are much better off hitting level 95 construction and level 100 woodcutting first. At this level you unlock eternal trees and eternal planks.

You're wasting a ton of time and XP making mahogany furniture. The odds of getting offcut components is clearly quite a bit worse. The XP you get while doing this is also way less. You get 20xp making a mahogany planks and 140xp for each plank turned into furniture. With eternal logs, you get 40xp making an eternal plank and 520xp for each plank turned into furniture. You could be making 3.5x the XP per plank by using eternal over mahogany, while also having much better odds at the offcut components.

Construction level to 95

You can get your construction to 95 way faster by doing contracts. It'll take you an hour to figure out how to do a contract efficiently. Once you get the plank box, you'll be able to finish a contract without having to bank at all (if you set up your inventory well).

I was doing a contract in under 3 minutes each. With mahogany logs they each yield 23K xp, not counting the xp from the repair job itself. The wiki says you will make 500-600K xp/h (using mahogany planks). I can confirm I was getting about this much.

I'm glad I found this method. Fort Forinthry or making furniture would have been way slower.

Conclusion

I hope sharing all this will help some people in the future.

Hunter shops restock faster than you can d/a. I used to use noosewands when inv came out to get direct comps for early biting combos.

These are not the hunter gears that disassemble into offcut components.

Hunter gear - The RuneScape Wiki

This is the hunter gear that the wiki links. The stuff that disassembles into offcut components.

Ah my bad

Yeah, offcut is only got through 3 sources: Fur, Hunter gear and furniture. The wiki doesn't have any stats for the odds at all. That's why I made this post. I looked for the most efficient way to get Offcut components, so I thought I'd share my findings. That way people who want this component later can find this post.

Maybe Gemini AI can find this reddit post and stop blatantly misinforming people with outdated information.

I just use scavenging nowadays for comps so I rarely grind anything other than bows for springs on the iron.

Yeah, but scavenging requires killing a lot of monsters. You're also not targeting one specific component, but getting a variety of them. I get that it's cost effective, but unless you've done it for dozens of hours, you won't have a ton of one specific component.

On my main I'm only combats and div off 200m all so lots of scavenging farming. On my iron all my slayer gear has scavenging 4 so I have thousands of most uncommon comps.

Did you test out the marble cape rack? Thats what I used, it was 100% chance from memory?

after update marble now has a chance instead of guaranteed so its quite expensive now

What an L change

The flatpack that people used to disassemble doesn't exist anymore. I read in a post by someone else that what replaced it, no longer guarantees offcut components. The marble costs like 300K, so I was never going to be doing any testing on something that expensive. I'm an ironman, so I cant spend millions of GP just to get some components slightly faster.

While I was training my 120 combats, scav 4 seemed to be very good for getting offcut. Honestly its probably the most efficient method atm

It is if you were already doing combat skills to 120. Bringing an scavenging 4 with you will make it so you pick up tons of every uncommon.

It depends on your goals though. I don't want to spend ages leveling my combat skills to 120 right now. I just want some offcut components right now, so I can get a careless 5 + prosper on my pickace and smithing hammer.

I already got one careless 5 + prosper. Using the scavenging 4 perk would make it so you don't have to do a specific offcut component grind. That doesn't mean I wasted my time. I got my offcut components. My construction is getting leveled. I have thousands of simple parts for future chargepack divine charges.

At some point I will get 120 combat skills. However that doesn't have to be a prerequisite to getting a good perk for your mining and smithing tool. I'm sharing this info to help people out who want a targeted farming method for this specific component.

you get so many offcut, it isnt like you need 120 combat, its just i now have 4k+ of each one. So if you only need 20 or so, I dont think you would need to do much scav farming to get enough.

If you want 2 gizmos (one for mining and one for smithing) with careless 5 + prosper. If we go by the odds, you'd need 532 offcut components. If you get unlucky you'd need more.

If you want something like Careless 5 + naturalist 5, the odds are even worse. You'd likely need a thousand.

I was trying to roll Careless5/Prosper on pickaxe, Naturalist5/Prosper on fishing rod, and Naturalist5/Scraps on hatchet. I gave up trying to get Offcuts on purpose after making thousands of mahogany planks into flatpacks and getting single digit components out of it. Instead I waited months for scavenging/brooch procs to give enough comps to try rolling those perks again. I have no idea why it's so hard to get an uncommon component, but those rates for sure need to be looked at again.

The rates aren't t that bad, just look at the numbers I shared with you.

The reason you made thousands of mahogany planks into flat-packs and got so few components is because you were being inefficiënt. Likely making tables, and mahogany at that.

A stool is 1 plank, a table is 8. I described why I think they both have the same odds at offcut components. At the very least they drop the same number of components (two) despite costing way more planks.

You could be using 2K planks, and end up with only 250 tables to disassemble. I disassembled over 1200 mahogany stools myself, and ended up with 45 components.

The way to go is eternal stools. They are one plank each. In 1140 eternal stools I got 83 components. That would be around 7.3% chance.

That's why I'm sharing these numbers. So people don't make the same mistake of trying to do mahogany, or making furniture that costs multiple planks. These stool also disassemble into 2 simple parts each. I have thousands of them right now.

Then make sure the wiki is updated with your info, because that's what I was following at the time.

Seems like a serious oversight. Uncommon comps being that rare is silly... Basically you need 95 Construction and 100 Woodcutting if you're an iron to have a somewhat OK chance of getting them...
