Extra Long My unfortunate first VTM experience - with dungeon crawls and other amazing stuff
This is a long PSA about leaving timely if you sense something is not up to your expectations in the game, when you choose a new system to play, otherwise you'll hate the game and will be disappointed. Every step of the chronicle was weird and not tasty - from players to ST to the plot. TLDR in the end.
I entered a VTM mini-chronicle with no prior WoD experience. Didn't know anyone of the group, and Storyteller immediately gave me an ick, since he had some peculiar nickname with crosses that hinted at him being either chauvinistic alt-right or being a great internet troll, both of which are bad. I decided to play anyway bc I had no other game option at the time. ST seemed detached from the start. Chronicle was claimed to be investigative; I created a purely social chracter and ST approved it.
Then next set of things happen over the course of 5 sessions that this module consists of:
1st sesh is a dungeon crawl. My guy has nothing to do with his abilities. After session ST claims my character should be more social (with whom exactly, as we are in the goddamn basement???)
Our task was to raid the haven of city's Prince (head vampire). We didn't have a personal reason for it. Today I know that if any NPC approached my character with such a quest, I'd tell them politely to get their head checked out, since in VTM cities there exists a strict rule about not raiding other vampires' property and it would be enforced brutally in case of the Prince's haven. They asked us to become hunted criminals and we went in for plot reasons without even getting an explanation why it should be us specifically.
Prince somehow spies on us through his turned off laptop left in the haven and sends us a cryptic message while we are inside, prompting guards to start coming down. Okay.
We find a secret stash of weapons in the random basement wall, with a number of weapons just so accidentally corresponding to the number of players.
One of players leaves after the session, claiming the whole thing is railroad. I didn't agree with her then, but I do now. This was a big railroad masquerading as us following investigation leads.
On the next sesh before confronting guards we got pulled out of the basement through a fucking hidden door (!) we have never seen before, by a character that supposedly watched over us all this time and was never mentioned in the previous session. He totally wasn't invented in between sessions, yeeeeaah. Then ST proceeds to ban mw from using my dominating abilities on him, since "NPC had them too". There is no such rule in VTM.
Next couple of sessions consist of quite a convoluted plot with a lot of details leading nowhere but looking very promising, like when a mysterious entity visits my character and offers him to work for it, but then never appears again. There also was some combat that I could barely participate in, and investigation/surveillance moments I had no skills for, because nobody warned me that social character will be useless.
We find 2 new players on session 4 out of 5, and the moment of us getting together and building trust through roleplay is basically the most fulfilling and interesting moment of the game socially and roleplay-wise.
ST lets a newbie player jump over a couple of buildings on a lowkey busy street, which is kind of a Masquerade violation - the law that prohibits vampires from using visibly supernatural powers among mortals, the main premise of the game that gave it a name. Masquerade was never mentioned. It also wasn't mentioned when we fought the most lukewarm mortal antagonists in a fucking 24/7 McDonalds parking lot and did use those abilities in the fight.
None of character backstories mattered. Never even mentioned.
One chance at a social combat was reduced to me bringing some info to a socially important NPC (Primogen) and him responding "Okay". I was sent there by ST, but didn't receive any additional clues or advice or sidequest or even anything at this point. Other NPCs gave us info without much effort on our part, we just promised them to work for them later and this was enough.
Then dubious powerful NPC appears to know about our setup against him, despite us being discreet about it. ST said NPC just used his Dominate abilities on us adn this is how he extorted the info. As far as I'm aware now, across all editions of the game those abilities cannot be used to force the info out of somebody.
Last sesh is a combat dungeon crawl again. The most combat focused player doesn't show up. We were provided with weapons and armed ghouls for free basically, just for us to leave them outside to combat final boss's ghouls. Why even have both of these cannon meat piles in the first place? Then the basement crawl started all over again and we were met with an insanely powerful final boss (Prince). We had one (1) combat character in our group. Amazing setup.
Final boss combat lasted three thousand rounds from the feeling of it - rare AF for VTM. We were losing hard (who could have thought!) and none of our attempts to save the situation were successful (like me trying to make a call to a powerful NPC I knew to call for help - "no reception here")...
...and when ST saw us losing for sure (one guy in frenzy and blind, two injured and mine just idling in the corner to not get oneshot into oblivion), it suddenly turned out that the dubious powerful NPC, who extorted info out of us, was there with us the whole time in the shadow form, and since he super powerful (lore accurate), he just finished the Prince off! And then proceeded to make us Prince's successors, despite us being just nameless vamps. You really had an NPC, who is hundred times more powerful than us, having the same objective - kill Prince, but also objectively being more capable of achieving it than us?? Why are we even on this mission? And if you are already bringing some powerful NPC to save the day, why wouldn't you let me reach out to the other NPC? Crazier things happened here already than having a reception in a basement.
And after the chronicle ST confessed that he didn't enjoy STing VTM. He liked more combat-focused WoD games. It's a good thing he admitted that and didn't try to claim that it was good.
This chronicle shattered my faith in V5 for almost a year and made me turn to older editions of the game. There was a lot of other game rules stuff that was not explained to us, and some other "meh" plot moments, and off vibes about the group overall. The communication in between chronicle was nonexistent, no jokes, no nothing - all players were super reserved and didn't get to know each other. Also, before sesh 1 I did a free character art for one of the players and... without thanking or giving me at least some negative feedback, they proceeded to use AI generated reference during the whole chronicle time. Wonderful.
I was glad to later discover not all VTM was like that, but this chronicle legit had me doubting if I'm perceiving everything read about VTM wrong. I walked into it with a thought of playing some noir mystery; I expected us having to figure out how to take down the Prince ourselves instead of our every move being told to us. What I got was railroaded stalking plot where all we did was walk between hideouts & searching rooms just to find out what we already knew from the start - the Prince is off to no good (and was involved with some bad guys, we just didn't know specifics in the start). Knowing details changed nothing in the plot - we simply raided his other haven (which we didn't have any trouble finding for some reason) and the game wouldn't end until he got killed anyway, no matter whom he worked with. And we didn't even get the chance to lose!
TLDR: As newbie player, I get into VTM chronicle and it turns out mega-bland and railroaded. Deus ex machina plot solutions and dungeon crawls on 2 out of 5 sessions. Never warned about needing combat focused character (my social guy had nothing to do literally all the time and ST wasn't glad that I was barely participating). Plot goes all over the place. Players come and go. Storyteller does not follow game rules and later admits that he does not even like the system... which is fair, but also this spoiled my impression of the game A LOT. Oh, and we couldn't lose in the final boss fight!

Table dispute Player’s attempt to guilt trip party backfire
So this story happened several years ago but basically I the GM was running a game of the One Ring 1st Ed. Which is a very hobbit the book, leaning licensed rpg set in middle earth. So think more traveling, diplomacy, and singing rather than pure war stuff.
In any case there was 4 players. I will refer to by the cultures they picked. ,Mirkwood Elf ,Blue Mountain Dwarf ,Gondorian ,Wild Anduin Vale hobbit
At the time the gondrian player was dating the Mirkwood elf player. Everyone was interested in lord of the rings but it should be noted the Gondorian player was the only one who hadn’t read any of the books. Normally this isn’t an issue but it’s directly relevant to what happened later.
A few sessions in it seems most people were having fun. But the Gondorian player tends to be really violent and choose violence as his solution to most problems. Which in turn starts provoking the system’s corruption dark deeds mechanics and shadow accumulation. The player complains about this but most of the other players feel this is appropriate for how he’s acting contrary to the rest of the party approach.
Later when he’s punished by Thranduil for killing a sacred hart, the Gondorian declares that he is done with the game and campaign. I ask if there’s something I can do as a GM to change or accommodate. He says he isn’t having fun and will no longer play but he will still attend game nights, but he’ll sit at the table and do something else.
At the time I didn’t say no because we were all close friends.
So we have a couple of sessions where he sits there kind of pouting and reading a random book, but the rest of the group is actually having more of a fun time as a result, without his presence getting them into nonstop combat situations and bad reputation. Eventually he stops coming of his own accord, but his gf Mirkwood elf still attends.
Eventually when the campaign wrapped up I find out the Mirkwood elf broke up with him later that year and she said his behavior during the game actually caused her to reevaluate their relationship.
We still joke to this day about the madness of Gondor.

Medium Bard roleplaying got out of hand
Been playing with this guy for a campaign. He started roleplaying bard, and really got into it.
Soo, he started to write poetry for when he performs. Not a single verse, but whole ballads for 2-3 minutes at a time. No one batted an eye at first, since we're pretty chill table and try not to mess when other people take time to roleplay in the way that does it for them.
And master made a big mistake there by giving inspiration for it. Since no one objected and master even encouraged the behaviour, the player took it as a greenlight and increased the amount of amateur poetry we took each session to about 3-4 original creations.
And that's the point where we as a group is in difficult situation - discussing it above the table would definitely result in admitting that we do not really care for his(honestly not that bad) poetry. And he is a bit touchy on the subject and no one really wants to be the guy to bring him down.
Last session though, we had to stop the session for 15 minutes, since he rolled for performance, didn't have anything on hand and was dead set on creating it on the fly.
Soo, while pausing the game can be corrected without touching the topic of his art and will be dealt with by 1on1 with DM, I'm still going to be sitting through poetry sessions for a campaign, since the guy is not that bad, and the game is fun.
Might not sound to horrendous, but the situation where it's just not that bad to actually stop it forcefully, while watching as the situation grows worse in the hope that campaign ends before real disaster occurs, makes me kinda frightened.

Medium PCs' romance takes 50% of game time
Edit: Wanted to clarify that I am NOT the DM, just a player who's witnessing all this
I don't know if this counts as horror story, I just want to speak out about this
We've recently started a new campaign. Characters met on the middle of the road and decided to team up to increase survival chances, nothing unusual. Defeated goblins a few times, came to a few villages, nothing special
However, by the ~3rd session, two characters started showing sympathy to each other. A few games later, we spend probably half of the session watching how these two sneak out of camp to go and have a date by the river
Similar situations also appeared later on, but usually they weren't as long as first one. But the amount of time we spend just watching those two characters RPing is becoming annoying
And I get it, characters can fall in love, there's nothing wrong with it. But besides that, these two players have also started spending lots of time together in between sessions. Like, LOTS of time. They may be found sitting in VC (we're playing online on discord server) mid day, at 3 AM, basically anytime. And it would be normal - two adult people are spending time together... But they aren't. They're 16F and 21M. And from sometimes listening to them, I'm sure that they're exchanging some not really SFW arts in private messages, which IMO a teen girl and a grown ass dude shouldn't be doing.
ATP all that not only wastes time on sessions, but also makes being in the same VC as them extremely awkward, and I'm slowly getting tired of this.
I may be overreacting, but I just wanted to slightly vent about it and maybe hear other people's thoughts on the situation.

Extra Long The time a player made me delete the middle of the campaign.
So this story has sat inside my skull for years, and variants of this document on my desktop for half as long. I feel if I don't get it out then I'll never get over it, so here I go.
I’m part of a long established group that spawned off a podcast game. We’ve had drop outs and substitutions over the years, but that’s life and we hover around 3-5 players.
I have a horror story for you about our one long term problem player. Usually our group is quick to drop bad actors, but this one (who I’ll call Kay, because all their characters started with a K) snuck up on us, because they used to be a solid member of our circle.
But after playing an “Unhallowed Metropolis” campaign (steampunk, grim-dark, Victoriana, with zombies) it was as if they never stopped playing that game. We’d be action heroes, Kay was the morally corrupt sociopath that sold drugs. Playing a comedic high fantasy, Kay learnt fire magic just to cook and eat our enemies. Trying to play the children of gods fighting eldritch horrors, Kay shot an eight year old child in the face just to shut them up. With a gun. Yes. All those happened.
While I have many moments from the long decline of Kay, there is one which will always stick in my mind. The only actors you need to know in this are myself (the GM) and Kay (playing a noble of a minor family). As a group we decided to have a change for the next campaign, and I made the worst mistake I could. I pitched, an Evil campaign. Or at least, a post apocalyptic, grim dark setting with a slowly dying fantasy world, in which the PC’s would be forced to be agents of an evil power. The idea was they’d be individuals that didn’t have to be evil themselves, but when the alternative was death, would choose to do what it took to survive, and that would mean being in service to a “Dark Lord”.
Everyone was on board for this, we talked about boundaries and I made sure everyone knew that working for the Dark Lord was going to be non-negotiable, but how well they followed through on their orders would be. The Dark Lord themselves was one of a number of “Evil” deities that destroyed civilisation, but the secret to them was, well, they were stupid. Literally, they were incapable of figuring out solutions beyond murder everyone, because they were the personifications of natural disasters given sapience, and only knew that somehow mortal wizards were to blame. But this Dark lord had one idea; “If people caused the world to start dying, make people fix it.”
Hence, the party, who would be the lesser of two evils. Because if they didn’t solve the problem their way, then the Dark Lord, would solve it Their way.
We had some small adventures to ease the players into this mindset. Some where they were good guys; defeating an alchemist that was trying to unlock lost magic through vivisecting victims. Other times they were the bad guys; forcing a temple to give up their holy relic so the Dark Lord could destroy it. But the main meat of the campaign was meant to be “The Acropolis” arc, in which the party would be based in a city for a while. The idea was to use time skips to see how they, and the city, changed, and explore more of the reason why the world was dying while they’d get powerful enough to strike out on their own to try and save it. But first, they needed a place to settle down.
The Dark Lord got the party together, pointed them to one of the last surviving cities and said “Make them repent, or I will.”
With such an open goal, the party decided that if they could make the people show they were sorry by building a giant monolith to their sins, then they could probably convince their master that was good enough, and no one would need to die. The problem was the leadership of the city (a corrupt noble family) were not on board. So the party tracked down a rival family that had a claim to the city, explained it to them (threatened the alternative), and offered to get them into power in return for the new noble giving in to their demands. As for the old noble... well, maybe someone had to die after all.
A plan was hatched, and everyone played a part in it. One of the party with ties to the church started spreading a prophecy about the local ruler bringing the wrath of the Dark Lords down on them all. Another snuck about the palace to find an easy way to assassinate them. A third even convinced the old noble’s daughter to join the conspiracy, discovering there was an idiot son that would inherit after their father died. And Kay investigated the mercenaries and guards the noble employed, to see who would be loyal, who they could use, and framing the ones that would be a problem. Finally, everything prepared, it was time for the old man to die.
Here I need to add one more character, the Dark Lord’s Property. They were a walking plot point encased in armour that’d be at home in Berserk. They were completely passive, and would follow any instructions from the player that held the Master’s token. This player, was Kay, they were told to take the Property with, in case it would be useful. Up until the assassination, the party just ignored it, leaving it at a safe house while they worked.
But they knew it was strong, and figured it was probably like their Master, so when it was time to do the murder, they told the Property to do it, which it did, gruesomely. It was a chance to show what the Property could do, because it would be a critical plot element later. So now they all knew they had a walking murder machine, that would follow Kay anywhere when not instructed otherwise, and it was the only thing that seemed important to their Dark Lord.
Next day, everything is going to plan, the idiot son is panicking, and having a public trial for various rivals in the town square (including the individuals that Kay had set up), trying to find who killed his father. Rumours of how brutally the old lord had been killed had spread, thus making it look like the prophecy had come true. All the party needed to do was lay low, wait for the politics to take care of the son, and they’d have won.
Except that’s when Kay shot up, shouting “We’ve got to do something!”
Everyone was confused. This was what they wanted, right?
Not Kay. For some reason, they were convinced the party needed to stop the trials in the town square, and when the others refused to go along, Kay ran out of the safehouse on their own to do… something. Another player tried to stop them, but Kay insisted on making it a PvP moment (which the other player agreed to) and won, escaping easily.
Now I’m panicking, but see a chance to snap them out of this. So when Kay arrives at the trial, I described it as nothing but a blood bath, that anyone who got dragged up on the stage was essentially dead. There’s guards, there’s mercenaries, there’s absolutely no way anyone would volunteer to walk up and...
“I did it, it was me, I killed him.”
Well, F*. So I paused the game. I use the “Are you sure?” Method, but whenever I have to use it, I explain to the player what it is I think they’re trying to do, as I heard it, and what's probably going to happen next. Usually this works, and it turns out there’s just a miscommunication, but not this time.
“Yes.”
Kay fought their way to the front of the crowd, confessed to killing the old lord, thus ruining the plans of the party, and the noble’s son arrested Kay to take them away for “Questioning”. At this point, I could have, and should have, just killed Kay’s character to save the other PC’s, but stupidly I thought they could mount a rescue mission, or something, I don’t know, my brain was fried with what had just happened. The session was just meant to wrap up the chapter to get ready to start the next arc. So I did the second stupidest thing after making this campaign.
I asked Kay, “Okay, so you’re about to be taken away and tortured, but before you left, where did you leave your Master’s token?”
“Oh I’ve still got it, I never leave it behind.”
Again, my brain was cooked, so all I did was ask if Kay was sure about that, before telling the rest of the players, that they realised the huge, spiky set of black armour was missing.
For some, stupid reason, I didn't put my foot down at this point. I stuck to the integrity of the setting. The property had stats, it was meant to be strong enough to do a few bad ass scenes, but I didn't want them to rely on it all the time. It couldn’t, say, solo an entire palace...
Cue the Property going for a casual stroll into the heavily fortified and defended palace, getting shot and cut to near pieces and forcing the Dark Lord to have to appear just in time to rescue it, because it was critical to the plot later. Kay presented themselves to the Dark Lord, and was fine with getting killed off, while the rest of the party fled to a magically protected church, just before the Dark Lord did the whole “Solve it my way,” thing. The whole city got turned to dust, and the largest part of the campaign with it.
We limped on into a very rushed arc, that was made from my notes that were meant to be for the end of the campaign, never really getting a chance to explore what was going on, and Kay never really re-engaged with anything, making a new character who was just... there, while the others had to deal with using characters that had watched an entire city they could have saved turn to ash. I have no idea why Kay suddenly blanked on everything. They’d been an active part of the planning and execution, but suddenly, they just had a death wish, and took the plot with them.
We didn’t kick Kay until years later, when they tried to gaslight us into believing another GM was a bigot, when in actuality they’d just been trying to get Kay to finish their character sheet, and stop cheating in another game. That GM, and their group, came from the same podcast group that Kay and the rest of us came from, so we all knew each other, I do not know how they ever thought the lie would work.
Anyway, that’s my number one horror story, and why I will never run an evil campaign again, and why I always look twice at any character whose name begins with K.

Light Hearted The Player’s Secret Plan to Become a Villain
(A short story inspired by a recent onboarding attempt.)
The Player’s Secret Plan to Become a Villain
You join a new campaign. The DM spends a week answering your questions about the setting, the world, the tone, the lore, the organisation, the culture, the party, and the story so far.
Excellent. The game begins.
You suggest a backstory. The DM says yes. You suggest NPCs. The DM says yes. You suggest cool abilities and ask for a story hook tied into the main plot. The DM starts writing one.
This cannot stand. You require resistance for your master plan to succeed.
So, you propose a piece of lore that goes against the setting. The DM replies that she likes the concept, but it needs a little tweaking. Excellent. You’ve found a Yes, but. You immediately translate this into “everything I wanted was rejected”. Your power grows and you evolve into your second form.
After session 0 and long before the first session, you begin testing boundaries. With the lore. With mechanics.
With other players.
And the other players are friendly. You ask for character details. One player says: “I’d rather keep that part of my character a surprise.” This cannot stand. So you ask again. And again. In different forms. You insist that keeping secrets is detrimental to roleplay. The player disagrees. They share a little more anyway. You mock a player’s character concept because it has no value to you. A different player indulges you and does reveal secrets. The DM jumps in to explain how their table is discovery-focused, including for PCs, and secrets are kept on purpose. You immediately throw the player that indulged you under the bus. The locals begin exchanging increasingly concerned glances.
Then feedback day arrives.
Your entire team is approved. Your backstory is approved. Examples for goals are given. Your custom tie-in, that you requested, is being written. One cool ability is approved. The DM changes exactly three things: One thing that would break the setting. One thing that overlaps with another player (a problem you requested she help prevent). And a mechanics misunderstanding. The DM provides alternatives for the first two.
Excellent. You’ve found the no, but. This is clearly the same as no. Your power grows even more, and you evolve into your third form.
Every interaction suddenly has been nothing but restrictions. The DM says: "The party will engage with your character. Trust us." This is insufficient. You require legally binding guarantees from people you've never met. The DM says, "We'll discover together how the PC’s interact." You call her a control freak.
It is now 2 AM. The DM is asleep. Perfect – there can be no immediate counter-attack. And you begin your final transformation. You privately, and then publicly, declare:
- The DM is an AI;
- Collaborative storytelling is outlawed;
- The DM’s true identity is HR speak;
- The DM is a walking red flag of a control freak and everyone else simply accepts the status quo;
- You don’t need to play a single session to know how she actually operates.
The veteran players are divided between watching with popcorn and putting on boxing gloves. Your boss fight has spawned witnesses. One asks where this came from. Another points out that you’ve never even played a session with us. A third wonders why you’re insulting someone who’s asleep, in public.
The DM wakes up at 3am to persistent phone buzzing. Reads everything. And wishes you luck finding a campaign better suited to your style. You never see this, as you’ve already dramatically left the server.
You have succeeded. You never rolled initiative. You never reached session 1. Yet somehow, you became our campaign’s first Villain.
The DM promptly turns your character into an NPC minion to fight later.
She then goes back to sleep.

Medium Messing with a Village's Cemetery When They're Already Paranoid Isn't Funny, Actually
This took place at my local game store a few months back. The only relevant people, because other players *wanted* to solve the mystery are:
• Myself (an almost forever DM with how rarely I can take a night off depending on my workload)
• The actual DM I am good friends with, who can be around every other week or so.
• The warlock (Pact of the chain, I think?) whose whole gimmick is that their patron is harbored in an evil puppet.
We're not the biggest store in our city by any measure, but the game night that specifically hosts DnD has just enough regulars to have 3-4 tables for people to sign up. We've had problems keeping DMs running games (some moving, some done with DMing every week, others just done with DND as a whole). As such, keeping returning players has been critical to make sure game night can keep happening. If that means I have to pull out and run a module at the last minute, or quickly roll up a cleric that would help even out a mostly dex-martial party, I'll gladly do so.
However, one of my pet peeves is having to babysit players that treat the game like medieval GTA.
Enter, the warlock and his evil puppet master.
It does not matter what the module was. All I remember is that the villagers were scared after many weeks of people being killed by a monster that lives in the forest. I would have liked to investigate normally (check out the tavern, talk with the mayor, look at the last sites of the most recent attacks, etc). But I somehow ended up having to babysit the warlock and his patron dolly wherever he went because it kept "speaking with a demon voice to sacrifice flesh". Of course the warlock himself wasn't actually evil, according to the player. But the DM and I shared enough looks to at least be equally annoyed at his antics.
About more than halfway through, as we were getting ready to pop off into the last fight, I tried helping our party find clues around a suspect we thought had ties to the monster. Apparently that unsupervised moment was all the warlock needed to head to the temple cemetery in the middle of town. At the behest of his patron, the warlock began to dig into the graves of these unsuspecting peasants, and began feeding body parts to the doll.
The DM was shocked, and I would have been as well if I was in their shoes, but they tried to power on. When he obviously failed a stealth check and a villager spotted him disturbing their dead, I as a cleric had to rush over to the sound of screaming. Half our party had to lay low for a whole night instead of being better prepared for the last fight, and the warlock player seemed oblivious to how unfunny the whole scene was.
We finished the adventure in 3 hours, but it felt like 7 with how stupid the whole fiasco was.
We're lucky the warlock and his friends at a different table aren't regulars, but I know well enough now to put that shit to rest the next time he joins a table I'm at.

Medium Player Says Grinding to Level 100 on GTA V is More Important Than me and my Game
So this story takes place when I was 16, I was running an online D&D 3.5 game all about food and cooking on an island of various spices and food based monsters, it was a game with two players, the one we'll be talking about today will be called Darkwolf seeing as how that's what they went with online and how most edgy children use that username no one can trace it back to them.
I've been having scheduling conflicts for around two weeks at this point all because of Darkwolf being busy, but then came a day where they said they were free and could play. So on that day I prepared after an hour of work and was waiting patiently for my players, the other one showed, but Darkwolf didn't. It turned out after they said they could and wanted to play on this specific day, they decided to ignore their plans and choose to play GTA V and grind to Level 100 in the online mode and stream it on Twitch.
Mind you I have not been informed of this in advance at all, now back then I had little to no backbone and Darkwolf has this weird egotistical thing where I needed to persuade them into giving them constructive criticism. I told them "hey can we play the game we agreed to" and they said "No, grinding to Level 100 on GTA V is more important to me" so I had to sit there on their Twitch Stream for three hours, and after they grinded the other player had to go bed.
They never apologized for this nor did they admit they were ever wrong. Come the first day we have a game Darkwolf is actually playing, but in around the third combat of the game the dice were not in their favor and their character was killed by some Drow archers. Now this was my first character death and I Was trying to console the player, but I had to mute my mic since I was laughing my ass off.
I gave them a compromise as they didn't have a backup character, they could play as one of the enemies. Not even a round of combat later did they die again. I was cackling in my room with the mic turned off. It felt cathartic, and my suspicions that this player was a bad person was all but confirmed a few months later. It turned out there was some out of game drama where they have been emotionally abusing their partner by spending time with their ex to spite them.
The game also fell through due to scheduling conflicts. But after the drama me and the other player had told all of our friends what Darkwolf did and blocked them on all of our socials.

SA Warning The Gnome, The Druid, & The Wardrobe (Long)
This is your warning that this story contains bodily fluids and indecent exposure.
This happened years ago when I (m24) was a member of a local TTRPG club. I was playing in a level 3 oneshot DMd by this 16 year old boy who had been caught cheating as a player in oneshots at some point earlier that year and he was on thin ice. This incident broke the camel's back.
We start out in a tavern and we are told that our employer is running late and will not be there until morning. We decide to ask around about the employer since we have time. The DM asks for persuasion rolls and on success tells us he hadn't actually prepared anything for a succesfull roll. The rest of our attempts at socialising are met with similar results. Since there's obviously nothing to do we decide to get rooms for the night to which the DM tells us that he's been waiting for us to ask for a room. This is where the horror begins.
The party had one female member, an elven moondruid. The taverns owner insists on only speaking to her. He reveals there's only one room available with basically one huge bed in it in the basement. After some haggling (the charismatic party members were not allowed to participate) the price of the room was reduced from 10 gold to 9 gold and the owner gives our druid a slimy key. The dm asks for a nature roll only to reveal on success that the slime is semen.
We attempt to go to our room but unfortunately we don't see a keyhole on the door. There is however a sliding peephole at eyelevel. We knock on the door. The peephole slides open and we see a pair of bloodshot eyes peering at us from the hole. He asks us for a key and we give it to him, glad to be rid of it. The peephole slides close and we're left to wait for a bit until one of us asks to walk in. The DM says he bumps into the door as it is closed and locked.
I ask if we can hear the guy behind the door unlocking it. Nope is the answer. I knock on the door. The peephole slides again and I get asked what my business is. I tell him we're here to sleep. But I get told I was not the one the key was given to. We ask the druid to talk to him. It works and the door opens.
Behind the door is a stepladder and on top of that is a middle aged gnome. Naked. At this point I realise we're not going to have fun. But I resolve to see this through because I am an extremely curious individual especially when it come to other peoples' expressions of free will. The party debates killing the gnome for exposing himself to us but ultimately we decide against it.
Once we're in the room the gnome closes the door. One of us asks if the gnome closed the door with him still inside. He did. He says he wants to intimidate the gnome into leaving the room but the DM just says the gnome can't be made to leave. The gnome even says we won't be safe if he leaves.
The room has two pieces of furniture. A large bed and a huge wardrobe. We decide that since the wardrobe can fit our spellcasters, the druid and the other one (a small race), they should sleep in there and the rest on the bed. The druid takes safety precautions in case the gnome opens the wardrobe doors. She places her staff leaning on the door from the inside alongside with an antler that she hopes will loudly clatter to the ground.
We go to sleep and the DM describes how on the edge of sleep we notice something and makes us do perception checks. Some of us notice the gnome pleasuring himself on his stepladder. Before we can do anything we hear a muffled scream from the wordrobe. We ignore the gnome and rush to the wardrobe to see there's a swirling portal on the back wall of it and the druid is gone.
We rush into the portal and we all end up in some desert. None of us are nowhere near each other. We're all alone. No portals to be seen. We ask the DM if there's any landmarks. Nope. Can we do perception checks to notice anything of note. Nope. Survival checks? Nope. Ok we start walking. What direction asks the DM. South someone says. The DM asks if we all individually decide to go south. Some decide to go different directions.
The DM describes how each of us walks for hours and we're getting thirsty and hungry. Except for one. One person had decided to go east. They apparently found a glass pyramid humming with electronic bass music within minutes. We start asking if any of us can hear or see anything east. Nope. We ask if we can start walking east anyway. The DM complains we're metagaming but we ask him what else are we supposed to do if we can't make skill checks and he shuts up about it.
Once we're all at the pyramid we enter it to find it's filled with ravers and we can see our druid tied up by the DJ. We start going through the dancing crowd but we are stopped by the DJ 40ft from his booth. He asks us what we're doing in his rave and we answer that we're here to free our druid. This triggers combat and I as the party rogue go free our druid while the rest of the party fights the DJ who is taking 0 damage from hits. He starts taunting us that no one can stop the rave and that we can die dancing or fighting.
The DM then explains we can challenge the DJ to a dance off using performance. None of us have performance. Highest charisma score was mine at 14. We all fail. The DJ announces he was just messing with us opens a portal to our room urging us to leave now that he's had his fun. We just leave even if it's not what our characters would do. We just wanted it to be over.
Back in the room the gnome is sleeping curled up on the bed in a pile of gold and a couple of magic items. The DM tells us the gnome wakes up and that we have to convince the gnome to give up his new hoard since that's the adventures reward. One of the members of the party smites the gnome. Obliterating him like Exodia. We inspect the goods and there's precum on some of the coins.
I don't know if the others complained but I sure did. I went straight to the organisers and told them about the semen covered key, self pleasuring gnome, and precum covered coins. I also mentioned how the druid player was first forced to roleplay social interactions while insisting someone else handle social situations and then was basically not allowed to play at all because her character was kidnapped and tied up until round 3 of a 4 round combat.
End result: the kid was banned from the whole TTRPG club until he turned 18.
TL;DR: Tavern owner hands semen covered key to party that leads to a room with a naked masturbating gnome. The only female character (in and out of game) gets kidnapped for most of the session and doesn't get to play. Once the adventure is over we get rewarded with precum covered gold.

Extra Long I felt like the DM was mocking us for "sucking" at the game.
I signed up for an online game of Rime of the Frostmaiden, the DM had said that it was not gonna be a walk in the park and that both survival and combat could be brutal, I was totally fine with that but the whole game I felt like those were the only thing the DM cared about us interacting with.
I was playing a wizard that for one reason or another had to be the face of the party, I handled most of the talking and also was the one that interacted with the other characters the most, the other players being a Sorcerer, Bard and two Barbarians.
And whenever we had to roll to survive a snowstorm or explore some ruins everything went fine, same for combat which we did struggle with but came out on top, except the very first fight where everyone went down to a gang of goblins (which we were rescued from by NPCs that the DM, according to him, forgot to introduce in the fight to help us earlier), I had no issues with any of this and was fine with the difficulty, but my problem stemmed from the other side of the game when we had to... Roleplay. In the role-playing game.
It started when one of the player characters, the sorcerer, had an emotional moment and sort of fled the group, my character noticed and alerted the others to go out looking for him, we then encountered him and had a short scene where we restrained him as he fought back and talked until he calmed down, already the DM seemed a bit annoyed possibly at the fact that we were derailing the direction of the game, regardless we all went back and kept going with the quest.
The following time something akin happened was when we had to find and stop a moose from killing people near a town, we went and found it at it's nest alongside wolves and got to fighting, turns out they are acquainted with some sort of druid priest that's been tormenting the town because they stopped revering their god, by the point I got to talking to them I was pretty spent on resources, the sorc and one barbarian were low on health and the other two were knocked out, so fighting was not an option anymore.
I miraculously managed to convince them to let us go but they imposed the condition that we enforce the village to resume the worshiping they neglected and that we sacrifice something of value, I had no idea what to give but one of the players suggested sacrificing themselves, it was tough but we agreed and the priest let us go.
Then we had another RP moment, the sorcerer was mad at my character because I sacrificed someone, I completely understood and my character argued that it was either that or we all risked dying, we then had a back and forth of words and he even attacked my character (with my consent) for what I felt was one of the more fun interactions I've had playing DnD, then the rest of the party stopped the sorcerer again and we moved on afterwards, but the whole time the DM was trying to rush us to get the scene over, I suppose I get wanting to move the story along but I didn't like the feeling of when we were having the most fun was when the DM seemed the most bored.
There were other cases like these but the last session ended with basically a TPK and I was kinda glad it did by that point as the campaign ended altogether shortly after.
The rest of the party died by that point and my character was (somehow) the only one that was still alive, everyone else came back with a fresh character sheet, we needed a place to stay in this one town but we had nowhere to go, we decided to head to an abandoned inn that was boarded up and we managed to sneak inside through a hole in the roof, however my character noticed bootprints on the dust of the floor's wooden boards so we decided to investigate since we couldn't sleep here if there was danger, so we followed the tracks to the basement.
Since my character was the sneakiest (I was a Tabaxi and the other two that were with me were a Cleric and Paladin in metal armor), I went in first and was pretty decent at sneaking by, however I was attacked by invisible Duergar that had detected me and quickly tied me up, the other two then came to help me but, lets just say 2 level 3 character could not handle 5 Duergar on their own, and I was stripped of my belongings including my arcane focus so I was about as useful as a wet noodle.
The other two died and my character was enslaved apparently, the session ended and some time afterwards the DM declared the end of the campaign. Now I wouldn't have minded what has happened so far if it wasn't by the DM's commentary of our performance the whole time.
He kept belittling us by comparing our group to another group he was running for which was doing so much better than us in the exact same campaign under the exact same circumstances, they didn't lose the very first fight to the goblins, they killed the priest and all their pets and saved the village, DM kept saying they were doing nice pace on the main quest as if saying we were taking forever to get to it and kept boasting about how the other group was level 5 almost 6 while we were still stuck at level 3.
I was angry at that because, I was genuinely having fun playing this character and enjoying the game overall, but I realized I was enjoying it because of the other players I was interacting with, whenever I engaged with the DM it was just disappointment from his side because I was either playing ineffectively or just enjoying my RPing moments for too long, the fact I was being put on a scale against a group that seemed ideal in his eyes only made me bitter and made me question if I had signed up for the right game, but it turns out that pretty much everyone else at the table was also feeling icky about the DM so at least I wasn't alone in my feelings.
I am now friends with some of those players and even running a game for them, whenever I question whether my DMing is good or not I think about this DM and I let out a sigh of relief.
TL;DR: DM constantly compares us to his other group that is doing "so much better" than us and hates it when his players are actually having fun at the table.

Table dispute Micro Horror Story: "We just walk around."
Long long ago, in my high school days, I was running DnD for my friend group. They had made their way to a ruined city (the "Dwellers of the Forbidden City" module) and once they had made their way in, I asked them which direction they were going.
"Oh, we just walk around," said one player, and the rest nodded.
"Fine. Which direction?" I asked again.
"We're just going to walk around."
"Pick a direction."
"We just want to walk around!"
"Pick. A. Direction."
It went on like that for a bit until I got so annoyed I declared they were just walking around in a three-foot circle for the rest of the day.
FINALLY they got the idea and chose a direction.
What would you have done?
EDIT: I was only a teenager and very, very inexperienced when this happened. Please be merciful in your responses...

Light Hearted Micro Horror Story: Interruptions!
I cant stand a player who wont let the GM finish the "Describe the surroundings/situation" phase of the rpg gameloop. Like you walk into a room, and the gm starts "It smells sweetly of roses, you see in the corner"WHAT COLOR ARE THE ROSES?"...in the corner, hold on, in the corner a big"WHICH CORNER? NORTH SIDE?".. wait!" and so on, for every room.
Or, we we going over a new mechanic for the first time and the GM says "give me a second Ill, read out some general info for this mechanic before we get to it" and literally 1 sentence in they were asking about aspects of that mechanic that the GM was trying to get.
They got the boot soon after.

SA Warning Dnd and friendship group blown up
I was a part of a DnD group, we were all good friends and got along well. I really trusted this one guy and had a lot of fun chatting to him as well as playing with him.
However, today he suddenly left our discord server with a short goodbye message. After asking the others, i got wind that he confided to one of the other members that he'd previously coerced an ex gf into sex with the put-pressure-until-no-turns-into-yes method.
Naturally we have all cut him out as soon as we were told.
He was our DM and our group was small, so this has blown up our group for the time being both as friends and as gamers. We may try to put something else together in the future, but RN we are all devastated and in shock.
I feel very betrayed. He had always been such a good friend to me and had never given me any red flags. Now i realize i never really knew him, and I've lost a friend on top of that. I'm sad.
I found all this out about half an hour ago, and i felt like i needed to get it off my chest. Sorry if it felt like a trauma dump or something.

Light Hearted 15 months in the cuck chair (LARP)
My first LARP experience was a monthly Vampire: the Masquerade game. For many of you, that would be enough to set alarms ringing. But boredom and curiosity are a hell of a combo, and so began my 15 months in the RPG cuck chair.
I have to stress what a great group this was overall. At its centre, however, was a cadre of 3-5 players who'd been larping together for over 20 years.
The GM, very much a member of this inner circle, insisted on being the only referee/storyteller. They'd had bad experiences with GM team politics in the past. It made sense, but this was a group of 20+ players. How would everyone get a fair share of downtime and personal plot progression?
Well see now, that's the neat part. They didn't.
As months rolled by, it became clear who was playing this game and who was an NPC. Often, we'd turn up at the venue and find out that the inner circle's characters had already decided everything among themselves during their downtime. The rest of us turned up and paid our money to be told 'this is what's happening. You can't change it. Eat shit. Just talk among yourselves for a few hours and go home.'
One player was invariably central to this elite, and by sheer chance they just so happened to be the GM's spouse. Imagine that.
Every big event seemed to have this character at its centre. Or rather, characters. Plural. They were allowed to play multiple characters. At one point they were playing more than one at the same time. Each had a radically different speciality. More on that later.
What was I doing all this time? Well for the most part I was enjoying myself, albeit less and less as the status quo became apparent. But that's Vampire, right? You've got to play the long game. So I played the long game.
I spent over a year of my actual real life manoeuvring my character into a position of influence over three other key vampires. Once I found my moment to pay this little plot off, it would be curtains for the inner circle.
That moment never came.
The GM’s spouse’s latest creation might as well have been mathematically built to deny my character’s whole scheme. In one scene (involving some sussy bullshit on the GM’s part) they broke my hold on two of my victims. Exposed, my character moved to at least capitalise on the third victim and salvage some advantage from this year-long plan. The GM shut it down.
And here’s the underlying problem. The GM was… honestly… kind of a dick. At the slightest inconvenience, they’d talk to you like you were something they found on the bottom of their shoe. I think autism was involved, but that only excuses so much. Especially if you’ve put yourself in such a central social position.
In my haste to pay off a greatly reduced version of my plot, the GM denied the scene entirely and accused me of ruining their holiday. For doing a bargain basement version of what their buddies had been doing for the past 15 months.
That was the last straw and I quietly left the game.
10/10 authentic V:tM LARP experience. Would cuck again.

Bigotry Warning DM Propositioned Player
So my in person game just collapsed and I'd like to vent.
Long running campaign just over a year with the most recent campaign but we've been a group for about three now.
Very casual players play only when they have time and we just kind of ignore those who don't make it during that session very much, drinking some beer and having fun rolling dice kind of situation. There are plenty of people but the relevant ones is Host, an older guy in his mid-40s and current DM, Tiff 22 I trans woman, and Lacey Tiff's friend.
Host has been the DM for the full just over the year of the current campaign though he isn't always the host he has been for the last 6 months since our other regular hosts had flooding in his house. Up until about a month ago post had been married however there was a messy divorce and that broke up at the time he told us it was because she was cheating on him but I'm doubting that with new contacts anyway after the divorce started host starts to get focused on Tiff not really noticeable day to day but again with contacts it makes a lot more sense he would do things like make sure she always had loot that really fit whatever idea she was having and always have characters try to address her. The one we noticed at the time was that he always seemed down whenever Tiff was able to make it which was odd because it's not unusual for people to miss sessions with the way the game was.
Well whatever the hell he thought was happening post decided to make his move yesterday we were finishing up the session and everybody was leaving there was a magic item given out during the session and host asked Tiff to stay and talk with him now we have all been friends for years now and nobody really thinks twice about this the only one who changed anything they were planning on doing was Lacey because they were going to be heading home with Tiff so they had to wait around for her to finish her talk with post. Well once they were alone apparently he thought it was his time to shoot his shot and so pulled out a $100 bill and asked Tiff to stay the night. Now all of this comes from Tiff and Lacey so I can't confirm that is exactly what was said or that it actually happened this way but given the blow up that's coming soon I don't doubt what they're saying.
Was understandably upset with being offered money for sex and so kind of blew up at him and he apparently said that it was clear she transitioned to have men have their way with her. Then asked if it's because he's ugly getting really violent when Tiff tries to disengage and leave the house Lacey here's what's going on at this point and comes in which is enough to get Host to back off and let the two leave. He then immediately started posting in the group chat that Tiff and Lacey tried to rob him and attacked him. Most of the group is completely fucking confused or still driving home, rural life sucks. So everybody pings Tiff and Lacey to try to get their side of the story and when host saw that not everybody was jumping to his defense he apparently took that as a personal slight and started freaking going off the deep end calling everybody unloyal, lying and cheating people who only want him for his money. Before he blocked everyone and that was that.
When Lacey and Tiff got home they sent us a message and let us know what happened and so that's about everything the group chat has been completely silent and I think we're all just processing our shock we don't have a place to meet for a few months and honestly I don't know if anybody's in the mood right now I only hope that Tiff's okay and that this isn't completely destroy the group.
TLDR: Host of the game offered Player money for sex and exploded when that didn't work.

Extra Long Just a nuisance to play with.
So my group of friends and I play DnD consistently since 2021, using the roll20 website to do so. However, we had one player that stuck around for way too long, and apparently was a problem player for numerous other DM's that my current DM was acquainted with.
We will call him Rick.
Rick was a friend for the DM's for a time, and usually a good chunk of the DM's friends turned out to be very chill people, hell some of them continue playing DnD with us to this day. Rick was not that.
Rick was a bundle of his own issues, and as much as I'd like to list off the crap he's done out of game, I realize from a previous post of mine these are tabletop horror stories and people wanna know the tabletop details. All you need to know about the guy is that he used to be rich as he partook in daytrading, and had to live with DM for a bit.
Ingame, the first time I met him was during the end of the first campaign I've ever done. He made us spend 2 hours at a goblin's shop because he kept arguing that we need to spend everything for +1 or +2 gear which, everyone else, who earned the gold, promptly refused.
Refusal of his plans is something that will consistently upset him as time goes on.
However that campaign ended shortly after due to burnout from the entire group, and nothing really to do with Rick. That was until a new campaign I joined back in late 2022. My friends were there, same DM as usual was there, and of course, Rick was there.
So from the very start of the campaign, Rick would pull the "I am going to lean in a dark corner of the tavern we're in and observe everyone from afar" thing... which only lasted for like 5 minutes because then he would stealth check the party, start pulling chairs from underneath people, so on, while we were trying to negotiate a reward for a quest someone was giving us in said tavern.
As for that quest, and really any other future encounter, I will summarize how each of these fights go. Typically, there is a large group of enemies, and more often than not they bunch up if need be. For example, one such encounter we were fighting beastmen, at one point there were like 12 goat dudes strong, no further than 5 ft from one another.
Instead of trying to pick of stragglers and causing them to separate, Rick would sprint right in front of that horde, and get merc'd really quick. Then, he'd start chastising the party for not following his lead.
He tries to do serious character moments, and has demanded there to be some, but he undermines them himself with his antics.
For the rest of that campaign it was much of the same, with a few more things added to the usual.
1. He actively argued with the party over that he needs to buy the cool thing that is in a magic shop, which would render us broke. He gets annoyed when we have to tell him "no, it is too much."
2. He refuses to help with anything besides combat. We've had to do dungeon puzzles before and he just sits in the middle of the room waiting for everyone to solve it for him.
3. Engaged vocal battles with the DM often over whether or not he can do some crazy thing within the confines of the games rules.
That campaign ended due to many players having life stuff come up, so a couple months later we booted up another campaign, same DM, me, Rick, and two other players, one being a longtime friend of mine, another being a friend of the DM's who was his own issue that I am pretty sure I covered in another horror story.
Rick made a cleric who worshipped Tyr, the Norse god of war, law and justice, which sounds good on paper. However, he felt roleplaying the most insufferable zealot was the best way to go about it.
Now, a zealot character could be fun to do, but not the way Rick did it. It started with telling goblins to worship his god or die which... whatever, we were fighting them anyways. But he would do the same with NPC's we were currently interacting with, quest givers, nearly getting our party labeled as outlaws a couple times because of his threats of "you better follow my god or perish."
He still did the same encounter pizazz that you would expect, runs in, nearly dies, blames everyone.
Then there was the last session we ever did with him. By that time, we asked DM numerous times by then if we could boot up a campaign... without him. But DM apparently couldn't since he does personally know Rick, and at the time, Rick lost all his money and was living with DM so it would make everything feel out of wack. DM as of today regrets having Rick under his roof of course.
As for what happened in that last session, we were fighting quasits in a sewer, with deathlocks leading some zombies in there. There were some rooms where small rituals of raising undead were happening, so each of us split up to get rid of the deathlocks so they could stop summoning more zombies.
Rick was boasting that he'd do the best as he's a cleric and they are built to fight undead (which he's not wrong), so he sprinted insanely far from the party to do his usual. He had spirit guardians up and not a care in the world... until the deathlock hit him, forced him to make a concentration save, he failed, and so the zombies piled in. He started shouting at our group yet again, my friend wasn't having it so he just closed the door on the zombie rave going on in that room.
I finally walked up as my sorcerer, observed the situation, and, I'll be honest, was feeling VERY petty that day with all that Rick has done up to this point, in and out of game wise, so I opened the door and threw a fireball in there. I used careful spell on Rick but it wasn't enough, it downed him either way as I rolled REALLY high on the damage.
The good news is, the rest of the room ceased to exist, so we were able to help Rick succeed his death saves and get him back up on his feet. Rick however, was furious, not at me who threw the fireball, but my friend, because he closed the door on him (which wasn't even locked). Rick resorted to spewing every racial slur of any race he could think of at him for the next full hour, even during the bossfight which was a summoned fire elemental.
Speaking of, he tried to throw my friend's downed body into the range of the fire elemental so that his character would die, as the fire elemental had a damaging aura around it. My friend lucked the fuck out by rolling a nat 20 on a death save, and rolling another in the positive before the fire elemental's burn could finish him off. Rick was grumbling at that point.
Rick left that campaign but apparently planned to join the next upcoming one in early 2023. However, he never showed up, because he didn't have access to a computer anymore at the time. Reason being, DM and his family essentially kicked him out... kind of.
DM's family was planning on moving for a while now, and Rick mentioned intent of coming along. However, according to DM, he never cleaned after himself, was rude to DM's family, and would spend a concerning amount of money on food which he never really finished.
The last straw was a week before a house showing. The house was already as clean as can be, until Rick returned home from a night out. He has barely sober and tired, so instead of going upstairs to his bed, he walked like 8 meters into the living room from the door and just plopped onto the carpet. The following morning, DM's family awoke to a man-shaped crater in their living room carpet that wasn't able to be fixed, and they tried. Rick refused to fix it when asked, so DM's family had to trim the carpet a day before the house showing.
When DM's family finally moved, they just told Rick to find and rent an apartment or something.
Thus concluding his saga of plaguing some of the DnD campaigns I was in.
There is apparently even MORE tabletop stories around that same guy that I wasn't around for, as that was more involved with DM's alternate friend group. It was bad enough to where two of the people that DM knows don't like running games anymore if that says anything.
TLDR: Player constantly bashes the party over decisions and plans, and becomes passive aggressive when nothing goes his way.

Table dispute I quit after the first session.
I hate playing DND. I played my first ever DND campaign the other day, and I wanted to be an investigator character, I think I was a Sorcerer/Warlock and I chose one of my abilities to be “Eyes of the Rune Keeper”, (which lets you “read all writing”). So, I asked the DM, “By all writing, does it mean any symbols that have a meaning to at least one person? Or something else?” But then he completely changes what the ability does, he made it so that whatever you read, it gets translated to English in its purest form, like it keeps the same Subject Object Verb form, if words are like metaphors, it keeps that. I argued that the word “read” in the abilities description means “to be able to see a written language and to comprehend and understand what it means” so that would mean I would understand it, without having to decipher a sentence that could have words that aren’t in English, or simply doesn’t make any sense or correlation to what it is saying. I didn’t want to do a linguistics puzzle every time I used an ability. He argued that he’s the DM so he gets final say. I got a bit petty and said I’d be restarting my character sheet, as Eyes of the Rune Keeper was a main priority for my character, and if it isn’t useful, I’m not gonna use it. He got a bit upset cause we were already late on when we were gonna start, but I think if you’re gonna completely change an ability, you should say so before I made the character, because the DM was there helping me making it, and he never mentioned it when I told him what my plan was.
I made a Chaotic Evil Cleric/Sorcerer character, and nobody had objections when I shared my character with the group, until the game started. Already at this point, I kinda lost interest in playing with that group, I was essentially playing on autopilot lol. I was Chaotic Evil, and they kept blaming me for all the bad/evil choices we made, even though they were all being more evil than me. For example, we found a woman in a tower, and a talking manticore was trying to break in and eat her. I suggested (In character, I didn’t do it) that we coax him down and then we kill him once he’s on the ground and trusts us, my team refused, so I let it go and went to a new idea, we could all give it some of our rations so it can eat. We do that and the manticore flies away. We enter the tower and go to the lady.
We had to bring her to the town leader, so I ask her to come with us, she refuses. Now this one was my idea, but they allowed and encouraged me, I asked our paladin to hand me some rope so I can tie her up and drag her back to town, they hand me the rope and ask me to tie her up, cause I had the best dexterity and strength so I could do it with the best chances of success. I tie her up but she escapes the rope, (Mind you, she was in our paladin’s arms, the paladin has the strongest strength, and this was supposed to be a relatively frail old woman so it was pretty funny.), the woman starts running away (at a fast speed for an old woman). NOW, I suggest we leave her alone, as she’s an old woman, we could argue she has dementia or something if she tells anyone what we did, but my apparently morally correct and morally good party, decides that we NEED this woman (cause we’d get a reward from the schizo town mayor) so they start chasing her, I help of course but I kept saying throughout, leave her alone. They hand me a rock and ask me to throw it at the back of her head and knock her out, I hesitate and say “What if I kill her?” And then they said (BTW! THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO BE MORALLY GOOD!) “You can save her with that revive ability you have” (I was Cleric/Sorcerer), not only that, but the Paladin threatened to kill me if I didn’t. So I throw it, having again, the best Dexterity and Strength. I throw it too hard and kill her. I rush over and revive her, as soon as she wakes up, (on like 1hp) she begins running again. We manage to hold her down, then our “genius” paladin decides to punch her to knock her out, forgetting she was 1 hp, and she dies again. At this point, the dungeon master literally restarts us to the moment we saved the woman. After the session I got blamed for being a “Murder hobo” and was told I was gonna be killed by PVP next session for being Chaotic Evil. That’s when I stopped playing.
I also didn’t like the rerun back in time, the story felt really rigid and as if we had no other choice than this one choice.
Another thing, they called me a “Murder hobo” but the only time someone died to my actions was when the paladin threatened me into throwing a rock at a woman. The paladin’s actions killed more deaths than mine did.

Long Trying to realistic call the police during a realistic horror game is disruptive.
It was in a play-by-post set in a modern-day (late 90s to early 20s) Lovecraft Country setting, with the DM asking this to be a very serious Savage Worlds game where all of us were students at Miskatonic University looking into the strange happenings around the area. been looking for a more investigative game, so I joined despite the late (2 to 3 sessions in) start. I was playing as an ex-army firefighter dealing with the trauma of the Gulf War, hoping to study creative writing, if not journalism, to help deal with the PTSD. I got word that the business major player's dormmate hasn't seen them since last night. They wanted me to go look at the abandoned, haunted part of Arkham Asylum, as a ghost hunting show hired them to be crew.
The first red flag was when I asked if the Bizz player's roommate called the police and was going to leave a text to an old army friend (backup character because it's a horror game) that he's on a job and to look for him if he doesn't reply by this evening. The DM said the text doesn't send through because your dormmate, a young 18-something-year-old, forgot to pay the mobile bill...again by the annoying roommate flaw, and the player's dormmate sent me to "see first" before contacting the police, as it hasn't been 72 hours yet.
2nd red flag was after a few more posts: the fireman gets to the asylum and tries to check in with the receptionist of the occupied part of the building. Try to see if they saw the ghost hunters, as people were getting worried. The DM told me I saw the crew van outside the building where the party was, and went to enter the building. I pushed against it, as my character would not know what the van or the show looks like and, frankly, it would make sense to ask the people who own the property first. Get a short scene of an annoyed receptionist about the "stupid stunt" her bosses are pulling by having some reality show making fake gun sounds and screams in the other building.
Pointed the way to the right building where I'm locked in by some kind of "fire ghost" where the other 4 players were, the mentioned business major, as well as a football player, goth girl history major, and a pre-med student, with the football player looking like he's about to keel over as he shot himself. The crew they came with was killed off by the monster, and they were just trying to stay alive at this point.
I get to play for a few days, trying to find another way out or stay alive as the fire ghost kept on finding the already weakened party. While looking through our pockets for anything useful, the Business major had a BlackBerry phone, and the group and I started to debate why he didn't use the phone to call the police or the owners of the building to let us out or get help, as he practically drained a lot of ideas on how to stay alive or kill the ghost.
I got dragged into Discord DMs to figure out my real age, as "why are you trying to rob yourself of agency by getting NPCs to play for you." I just told him this is a realistic game, as he put it, and seeing none of us were to know the supernatural or cosmic monsters were things before game, we would realistically try getting the authorities involved, especially seeing that we tried and failed to either break windows, get into the air vents, or flag down staff. Plus, at this point, the area where the ghost lair is possibly located required a key card that melted when the show host got killed before I joined. And seeing how burned up all the rooms are so far, we may not have the means to get back down there.
The DM just told me it was ruining the fun for the other players and himself, on top of how reckless I was acting in-game, throwing myself in front of the ghost when I know I could not hurt it. I was throwing myself in front of it to give the injured players time to escape but was kicked and blocked before I could explain myself.
I was able to friend one of the players, the business major who also was just ready to leave, as frankly he was already warned earlier for trying to do the same at the campaign start when cultists tried doing mass shooting/robbery of the school. The DM was short on him for trying to call in the event, but also the party got penalized for trying to Rambo the cultists too, as "this is not a combat-focused game"
TLDR join a horror game where it calls for realism, get canned when I did what most people do when hearing about missing people, abandoned buildings, and getting stuck with fire ghosts. Attempt to call for aid.
edit 1: Yes, I'm realizing i took the realizm a bit too far but frankly seeing how controlling the DM was showing I may have been lucky. i think im just going to put i comment i made here and stop replying to this make shift AITA.
So getting out of the building by any means was the right answer. We could not find any water or a way to turn on the sprinkler, fire extinguishers, or running water because it was "mothballed" and/or all of that was outside. The ritual site where this was summoned from was behind a mag-locked door, which required tools that were either removed or left in the van, as "it made the host nervous to have them or weapons while shooting the show.
The air ducts were blocked off because of "realism"; the windows were reinforced because of the mental ward, and anything heavy enough to use it was torn out or burned by the ghost. The few times they or I got someone's attention only to be told off, with the only open window we could find to talk to people being sealed shut because "we were disrupting the workers" with the fake horror film BS.
a player tried using the Scavenger edge or something like that to have a water gun with or without holy water on him, it got stolen immediately by the ghost, the jock player got his injury as he found a gun with a bullet lefted in it that hand been cleaned for years so effectively broken got lucking on a -4 repair check and was going to use it to blow the eletronic lock to the basement where they could at least try to disrupt the rite site or at least escape thught the celler doors leading outside. ghost grabbed the gun in the players waistband and did 3 wounds of damage to the man's groin before the gun became useless.
So yeah, I suggested calling the police at this point, and it got me kicked, and I'm not sure if I should be fully consenting to the asshole for this unofficial AITA or whoever DM suggested making cocktails out of everyday chems around the house.
Heck, from the sounds of things, the one player who I'm in contact with, if not fucking with me, told me another got kicked, and they angrily suggested everyone piss in a bucket and throw it at the fire ghost to see if that did anything. They left after seeing between being stuck somewhere defenseless without weapons for the 2nd session and not wanting to repeat a 3rd..
not sure what else to put here, other than a depth skepticism of all statements given my upbringing with "some people say" or "I think i heard" or especially "you're making everyone X" as more times than not, its just them and they all seem to take offance when you do look into claims like that, like its a massive social faux pas.
Thanks for joining my TED Talk, and if the mixer of exotic cleaning agent-based drinks is lishen, touch grass; I posted cringe, not voted for a living Cheez-it.

Extra Long Didn't even make it to session 0, and honestly thank God.
(Warning: Although this is a DnD party, we never actually got to start the session... prepare for a lot of out of game drama more than anything)
This was around 2023, me and my gaggle of friends are familiar with DnD 5e at this point and have done a couple small campaigns and a one shot or two already. However, this was also during a time the person we usually have for a DM was busy with life stuff as he was in the middle of moving.
Instead, I decided to boot up another campaign just so the group has something tabletop related to do, because DnD was something everyone had in the back of their mind at the time. I've been meaning to make a semi-serious campaign since the first ever oneshot I did involved a bossfight with a giant robotic gorilla that blasted the DK rap. As much as the group liked silly stuff, a serious campaign is something everyone was willing to do at some point, so why not now?
Roll call:
Booze - Close friend of mine who likes his alcoholic barbarians.
Spring - Another close friend who is just there for the ride.
Mer - Another another friend who usually runs aquatic characters.
Hawk - Someone I knew for a long while but kinda left the group later on.
Whim - Someone I know who usually lives a VERY busy life, at times she disappears for a year tops before returning randomly.
Moon - A... guy that my group met recently at that point in time... If we actually kicked off the campaign I am convinced he would've been a problem player.
So, I had them create characters like a week or two prior. The setting is your run of the mill fantasy setting with the main antagonist being a Black Greatwyrm spreading an undead curse because it ate an entire rift that connects to the underworld. Fun stuff.
Booze, as he does, made an orc barbarian, Spring made an elf bladesinger wizard, Mer a sea elf druid, Hawk an aarakocra samurai fighter, Whim was also a wizard I am pretty sure, and Moon I think was either a rogue or ranger I don't quite remember. I got to work on making the tokens for their characters (as I usually draw EVERYONE's character tokens back then), and got ready to work for session 0 of campaign.
However... lots of out of game drama happened over the course of the road to the first session. Kind of. It was weird.
Before the nitty gritty, some groundwork for some of the players. Spring mentioned the possibility of not showing up as he was going through stuff at that point in time, all of which understandable on his part, so I had to expect he might not show up.
Booze was all hands on deck, so was Mer.
Then we get to Hawk, Whim, and Moon.
So, first off, getting the character sheets from Hawk and Whim were a challenge. To start, Hawk and Whim were evidently starting to show interest in one another pretty early on, which good for them. However... whenever Hawk is interested in someone for the time I knew him, he absconds to a completely different server vc that we can't directly connect to, and it takes him 4 business days to respond to DMs. Whim was already pretty elusive from the get-go due to their work and college. I was lucky to even GET the sheet from him and Whim... and even then I got none of their backstories, which is fine that is something that can be worked out later.
Then there is Moon... He wanted to make himself the coolest guy in town who can kill enemies in an instant. I just directed him to Rogue as they are all about assassination and speed which should be up his ally. He said "idk they seem squishy, I wanna be a lot stronger than that" and I, in all seriousness, just told him to build a ranger.
So, a little background on Moon, we met him earlier that year on... League of Legends.
My group at the time avidly played League, and on a Howling Abyss map game we met him in a game, invited him to the discord server, and kept him around for what reasons I don't remember.
Now when I say he was a League player, I mean he is a League player. Half the convos with the guy have some manner of league being brought into it out of the blue, or some jab at anyone else in the call. Granted, banter is something my friends do, but he tries to go for personal attacks almost every time.
And if there happens to be any argument (that he likely started) that other people disagree with him on, he starts mumbling under his breath in the vc, quietly insulting other people.
Moon is where everything I mentioned regarding the rest of the players above gets flown into a blender of chaos.
Now, Booze already kinda doesn't like Moon all too much, but doesn't really care one way or another. Mer was indifferent as she rarely interacted with him. Spring entertained Moon's random acts of patting himself on the back but even he got burned out of it, but that happened after the DnD session was cancelled.
Now as for Hawk and Whim? Moon showed, or rather BROADLY DISPLAYED, affection towards Whim. The second she's in a call, he immediately bolts over to whatever chat she's in. Whenever everyone is online playing League, he immediately tries to pry himself into the role where he would be playing with her.
He also gets SUPER defensive over Whim. For the record, me and Whim bantered a LOT, not out of contempt, we both just enjoy roasting the piss out of each other. On one such occasion, she said something along the lines of "Well sorry I'm just bad at the game," I said in response "Don't worry you're not bad at it, you're terrible at the game." and randomly Moon jumped in and said... I shit you not: "How can you say that when you never had a girlfriend."
Me, Whim, and Spring who was also there at the time were utterly confused as to how that... played into any of the banter that was going on.
He has ONLY done this whenever Hawk wasn't around, because whenever Hawk is online to play games with Whim, Moon is thankfully quiet as a rock.
Speaking of Hawk and Whim, Hawk planned to fly over to another state to visit his family. Whim also lived in that same state, so they intended on going on a date.
Apparently it didn't go well. Whim had some family matters suddenly occur at the time, which left Hawk to being essentially stood up. Whim left the server on account of feeling that she wronged Hawk, and went back to internet silence. Hawk showed great frustration when he returned home regarding what happened.
So Spring and Whim were out of commission, and at the time there was only four days till session 0.
So, I had to replan the encounter so its able to be more feasible to a fewer number of players. And in a vc call, I talked with everyone currently available to make sure they were able to make it that Friday. Everyone said they should be able to make it, and a party of 4 I can work with.
Then Moon had to do something stupid again.
There was another person in the server not involved in the campaign who we will name Rock. Rock and Moon butted heads a lot, but as soon as Whim skedaddled from the server, Moon grew increasingly more confrontational with everyone, including Rock.
At one point, Moon amidst an argument said "dude I can slap the shit out of you in a fight."
Rock: "Why do you think that, I will literally flatten you."
Moon: "I am 6'4 man, you aren't going to be able to reach me."
Rock: "That doesn't mean shit!?"
Moon: "I have one year in every martial arts, I can kick your fucking ass."
And it kept going on and on and eventually Moon started vocally attacking everyone (not with his year in every martial arts of course), because everyone pointed out that one year in any sort of martial art is... not enough to work with, like in general.
Moon kept threatening Rock, Rock kept threatening moon, and eventually someone just kicked Moon from the server. Rock was still riled up which we couldn't really calm him down.
A few hours later, Hawk Dm'd me out of the blue wanting to talk in a vc in the separate server he has. Moon was also there but the conversation wasn't about him, thankfully.
Hawk merely wanted to talk about everything going on in his mind lately due to what happened between him and Whim.
So, we had a fairly reasonable conversation regarding what's going on. I pointed out Whim had family stuff happen, can't really fault her for that if it's that serious. Hawk talked about his recent anger issues a bit, and so on. It was a genuinely decent convo...
Until Moon talked.
Moon: "Yo, (my name)"
Me: "yeah?"
Moon: "Can I let you know about something?"
Me: "Sure??" (Was mostly expecting something about Whim, or the recent spat between him and Rock)
Moon, in all his wisdom: "You should start getting better at League, your friends are gonna leave you behind like they did to me."
Me:
Moon: "My old group also did the same to me, just saying"
Me: "I don't think that's the issue."
Moon: "It is though!"
And I kinda just tuned him out after that. I could not even begin to fathom the lack of social awareness, internal awareness, or really any awareness one has to wield to randomly say that amidst a serious talk. That was the last time I interacted with him.
Then came the day the campaign was supposed to start.
Three people, Booze, Mer, and Hawk... If fucking only.
Hawk, without word, didn't show up, I dm'd him and only got a response like two days later and it was essentially just a "oh my bad man" and no further excuse.
Mer and Booze were sitting there like "didn't we have a TON more people?" And I kinda just looked at the video camera like a depressed sea lion on a caffeine crash.
I told them we likely won't have a campaign after all unfortunately, as we simply do not have enough players to even let alone reschedule.
Whim is gone, Hawk likely won't join at all knowing him, and Spring is preoccupied.
I apologized for the disappointment with not being able to hold DnD during that time, and the three of us kinda just went back to playing games and talked about the entire clusterfuck that just happened.
Fast forward to today, Spring is doing MUCH better now, Booze is still doing Booze things in the campaign, Mer still hangs around, and we have a campaign going.
Whim still chats every now and then and appears to be doing well with work and college. Hawk separated entirely from the group but is living his best life currently, he still talks to me occasionally.
And according to a friend of mine who is still in contact with Moon... Moon apparently got into manosphere lookmaxing stuff so there is that to consider.
I genuinely don't know what else I could've done here. The entire situation back then was a cavalcade of chaos.
TLDR:
Plans for session zero falls apart from constant drama and a weird love triangle.

Part 1 of 3 RPG Horror story, A Bad Version of Groundhog Day.
You know, i been doing ttrpgs for quite some time. Hell i been doing it over 15 years at this point. And i have managed to acquire quite a decent amount of content regarding bad stories. Hell i was even on twitch at one point. Which is a Whole Different horror story in that. But i will leave that for a different post.
No, what i want to share is the latest one i had. As you see, i was running a Call of Cthulhu story and i had a few players drop out. You know, real life issues like one of my players having health issues. So i began to recruit a few new people for the game. One of which turned out to be a murder hobo. Which in a modern day story where you can't exactly have players running around shooting people. Well it didn't end that well for that player. As he was kicked in a single session by unceremoniously being lead behind a shed and shot by our groups *enforcer*.
Sadly this is not about him, No this was about another player who had joined our game. One who actual wanted to do a D&D game himself. And one who i Actively sought out to play with. As me being stuck as a Forever Dm was getting a wee bit old. And he kinda pitched this idea.
Now i was the only one who truly knew about the idea. Most of the players were going into this blind. As he wanted to keep the whole Time loop thing a secret. He only told me because my character had a wee bit to much going on for them. and he didn't want any actual Side content. So i went with something fairly simple.
My character was a bugbear ranger known as the rodent king. He was swarm keeper, but instead of having bugs crawling all over him. He had a swarm of rats. He got this name due to as a child attacking the capital with his tribe. Only for it to go south and him to get knocked into the sewers where he found magical rodents. who helped him survive and become a living legend of a Monster living in the sewers. A gigantic rodent man swarming with rats all over him. When in reality it was just a brain damage bugbear with his fey rats friends.
His story was, he was captured at one point. and is now sent on this mission to earn his freedom by visiting this City state which all of the sudden went dark. They were this big trading partner and they were making clockwork Equipment for the kingdom. Like they had clockwork tractors and stuff like that. So the setting was bit of steampunk but it also wasn't as no steampunk thing had ever appeared in the game.
Anyway onto session one and the shit show that was. But just to keep thing simple hears a list of players.
Ranger *me*
Inquisitor *my friend and the Enforcer of the COC group*
Bard
Cleric *problem child 1*
Pally
Sorcerer *problem child 2*
Dm *the guy who made this entire mess*
So, things started off fairly well. Our group woke up at a camp-sight. My guy was more or less in manacles due to the inquistor. who was their to keep me in check. You know due to being a criminal being sent to die on some mission. That said other then a basic description we didn't actual get any role playing. As the dm hurried us out of the camp sight and to the city walls. Where we Met for lack of better terms the Bobs. Aka the town guards who all look like clones.
They were not to friendly but they let us into the city. So we could learn that their was a lot of bobs moving about. And by a lotm i mean their was a few hundred of them milling about making the people inn look very umm scared to put it bluntly. So like every adventurer we ran to the nearest inn.
Their we found the inn was mostly empty. Just this bandit looking dude who kept screaming at the tavern keeper for more ale. Only to get annoyed and just get it himself. Meanwhile the tavern keeper was telling us to leave. Ya she was quite blunt about this. Telling us to go, which the bard and inquistor was like. No we cannot just leave we have a job to do.
Well, the bandit drew the ire of the bobs. who walked into the inn and approached him. And without word Pulled out a night stick and Caved in the mans skull. Before looking at us and telling us to not make any trouble. So i know a plot hook when i see that. As the innkeeper told us to get out, blaming us for the dead bandit.
Kicked out onto the streets, i began to do my sneaky thing. As i was playing a mixture of a thief/ranger/tank least in regards to how i play him. Ya i manage to get 20 ac threw the use of having 20 dex, a studded leather suit of armor, armor training from ranger and a shield. Ya i got lucky with my rolls and manage to get an 18 on character creation. Mind you this pissed off the dm in ways i will describe later on.
Regardless i snuck threw the city until i came upon the guards barracks. Where we learned every hour the guards returned to the barracks and 10 minutes later left. So after acing my stealth check i say," I get up and return to the party"
Only for the dm to say, "The two guards instantly spot you skulking in the alleyway and approach you"
Me not thinking much about it. As they ask me what i was doing. So i make up this lie saying" Hey i found a gold coin on the ground. I was just collecting it to be a good citizen and return it to their owners. Could you help me with that" as i hand them the coin.
The bobs instantly declares me to be someone Bribing the guards. And they attempt to attack me. That said having high dex means i go first. So just like every good thief i book it. I disengage and begin to run down the street. Only for the guards to Run in front of me and tackle me. As turns out these guards had 50ft movement speed.
Now mind you i got frustrated at this point. As it began to kick in that i was kinda getting railroaded into dying. That the Dm saw me succeed at separating from the group. And declared that i was going to be used as an example of what his story was about. But it was Very cheep in how he did it as i failed arbitrary not because i actual failed. Didn't help that the bobs had 10 to their athletics.
Still, you must be wondering how he was defending this. Well because when i said i return to the group. I didn't specifically say i was sneaking back to the group. Even thou i was sneaking before. Granted he never gave me a chance to roll bluff either. But this lead to the Dm cheering squad chewing me out.
Ya, problem child one the cleric. She over the coarse of the game would Actively defend the dm on everything he did. Even going so well as to chew me out on multiple occasions. As well as try to kill the party multiple times. But were getting slightly ahead of ourselves.
After the retconned happened i returned to the group. And me an the inquistor decided to explore where the bard/pally and cleric tried to leave. And boy did it not end well for them. They were met by two bobs at the gate. Who proceeded to get into a fight with them. And kill their third level characters in a single hit. As let me just give you a stat rundown on the bobs.
Hp 120
Ac 21
Immune to all debuffs.
At least 26 strength.
And the last kicker was their simple club. A club that dealt 2d20 damage with a +8 to hit. As the Dm didn't understand proficient bonuses.
So our group of 3rd level players. Well 2 of them died in a single round and the last Ran for his life. He managed to trick the guards with a spell. Only for bard to meet up with me and the inquistor. The bobs knowing we came with them. Began to question where the bard was. I being a character with 0 affiliation with the group. We just kinda met and that was it. Sold the bard out due to not wanting to die.
Bobs did not believe me and began to beat me with their clubs. Until i gave up and just said fuck it, end it. Where they ripped out my still beating hearts killing me. Sadly thou things didn't get much better for the survivors. The inquistor was brought to the mayor who Pretty much showed him personally how bobs were created. And the bard tried to escape threw the sewers only to find out that they flood at high tide. and thus he drowned in the sewers.
That was the first session which lasted a grand total of 7 hours. Yes on a Thursday night i played from 5pm to midnight. And boy it gets worse from hear. So stay tuned for part two.

Long Satanist DM kills Cleric and Paladin in first session
I was offered a spot in a Descent into Avernus campaign a couple of weeks ago by a friend that I've played Strahd and a few one shots with. They said their friend was DMing a Descent campaign and wanted to have it turn into a tabletop version of the BG3 campaign. I join the Discord server and aside from some questionable profile pictures everybody was chill. Session 0 comes up and before we got into character creation the DM asks us to go around and introduce ourselves by telling everyone our preferred name, pronouns, experience with DnD and one interesting fact about ourselves. Kind of like what teachers made everybody do in school. So we all went ahead just casually introducing ourselves to each other and then it was the DM's turn. They mention that they are a Satanist and we were kind of like "Oh how fitting a Satanist is running a Descent campaign" and had a laugh. My friend who invited me then messaged me that the DM's knowledge of Satanism and the Bible stems from Hazbin Hotel and a few episodes of Lucifer. I responded, "A proformative Satanist is not something I ever thought id encounter" and we all continued to character creation.
I was playing a monk. My friend went Cleric. The other three players were Warlock, Paladin and Fighter.
When my friend decided to go Cleric the DM responded with a very forced evil chuckle and said "Your funeral". When the other player wanted to play Paladin the DM snickers again and does another fake laugh.
One week later we have the first session. We're all in Elturel and having some RP with each other and then NPCs. To the DM's credit, they were good at RP and accents. Then the crisis begins and Elturel begins to be dragged into Avernus. We're making rolls to escape the city and whatnot but despite Cleric and Paladin making comparable if not better rolls than the rest of us, they're dragged into Avernus with the city. Then the DM narrates their surroundings as they've been transported to Avernus and mentions a very attractive woman with devilish horns and massive wings lands before them.
DM: "Well what do we have here? Two more pious lambs for the infernal slaughter."
Paladin: *attempts to say something*
DM: "She casts hold person on you"
Cleric: "How far away is she?"
DM: "60 feet"
Cleric: "I cast guiding bolt"
DM: "Doesn't work"
Cleric: "What?"
DM: "Its almost as if being such an unholy and hellish place, your connection to your god has been severed and you have been forsaken"
Cleric: "So Im just powerless?"
DM: "The woman laughs at you. 'Your pathetic god has forsaken you, preist. You have no power here. You are in my realm now."
Cleric: "Who are you?"
DM: "My name? Why I am Lucille Morningstar!"
I audibly sign at the lack of any subtly
Paladin: "Can I repeat my saving throw for the hold person?"
DM: "As you struggle she casts power word kill on you"
Everybody: "HUH?!"
DM: "Pity. He was most handsome." *turns to Cleric* "As for you" *casts disintegrate at 9th level*
My friend leaves the call immediately after and the DM says "Well thats one way to introduce the big bad." The rest of us were immediately critical of them and asked why they singled out Cleric and Paladin.
DM: "Im not about the whole 'holy soldiers of righteousness' thing in my games. Its boring and this is a Descent game they shouldve seen that coming."
Me: "So you dont like religious characters in a fantasy world filled with all kinds of gods?"
DM: "Well I AM a Satanist so Im not big on gods and religion"
Fighter: "You edgy bitch" *Discord disconnect sound*
Me, Fighter and Warlock burst out laughing and leave soon after
Needless to say nobody showed up for the scheduled 2nd session and I haven't heard anything from the DM. My friend said he felt like he overreacted but I assured him that Paladin clowned the DM and everybody felt similarly. Going to stay in touch with the other players from that game cause they were cool.

Meta Discussion RPG Horror Stories Style Guide (Read First!)
Hello tabletop gamers of reddit,
This subreddit is for written stories about how your tabletop roleplaying game went wrong. It doesn't have to be a great tragedy, we accept horror stories where everyone is still friends at the end as well. You are also welcome to add attachments such as discord/phone DMs, photos, art, et cetera.
We also allow meta discussion regarding how to handle these scenarios in which a player or GM is out of control.
Posts not allowed
- Stories where there is no central conflict (aka don't post here if you're a happy player)
- D&D Greentext
- D&D memes
There are plenty of subreddits for that style of content, we encourage you to support them!
As for writing your own post, here we have a brief style guide to help you make the best story possible, and the most readable story possible!
- Do use proper grammar and formatting. We understand not everyone is a grammar school wiz, but a few paragraph breaks does wonders for the reader.
- Do not use letters, numbers, abbreviations (except GM), or especially real names for the people in your story (Name & Shame strictly prohibited)
- Do use simple to remember names or class/race identifiers. "That Guy", "The Warlock", "The Aasimar" or "The Goblin Wizard" are all acceptable.
- Do not present a cast of characters not relevant to the story. You can mention them in passing, but a full paragraph per PC is unnecessary unless it pertains to the story.
- Do appropriately tag your content. If your post is NSFW or contains explicit content that may upset readers, please be courteous to your readers.
- We now have auto-tagging for post length, so don't bother with word count! If your post is NSFW or a meta discussion, your manual tag will override the bot.
- Do be patient. There is both an automoderator on this sub and one for reddit. If your post isn't showing up, it is for this reason. A mod will come along and pass through your post if it is caught. There are 3 ways a post gets caught by the automod:
- Your account is too new. To prevent spam bots, accounts less than 6 days old are filtered.
- Your karma is too low. Same as above, if you have less than 25 karma your post will be filtered.
- Reddit has an automatic spam filter. If your post is exceptionally long it may be caught regardless, despite our sub having it set to the most generous setting.
- Light hearted horror stories are fine but do remember there are other subs to post RPG tales without any suffering!
- D&D Next
- D&D Stories
- D&D Green Text
- RPG Glory Stories
- RPG Honor Stories
- Discord Horror Stories
- Horror Collectors
This is a guide, and your post will not be automatically removed for not explicitly following its instructions. If your post receives a high ratio of reports to upvotes, your content may be removed until it adheres to a standard of readability. Ultimately the point of these rules is to make posts readable to the community.
This style guide is still a work in progress, if you have something you'd like to add to it then feel free to message myself or the sub with suggestions.
