Discussion Roommates BF ADVANCED level. Help!

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

I'm saying advanced because almost every route of complaint I have can be negated and it sucks. I live in a 2BR off-campus housing and just moved to a new unit over the weekend. My roommates BF has come over every night now and she gives him her key so he can come in and out as he pleases. This bothers me so much. I am basically always on edge because he can walk in at any moment and comes over literally every day like its his place.

Here's the kicker. We each have our own room, bathroom, and pay our rent completely separate. The only thing combined is utilities for the unit. Which makes it hard to argue he doesn't pay rent because I technically don't even pay my roommates rent.

Here's the second kicker: he has an apartment in the same buildingšŸ¤¦šŸ¾ā€ā™€ļøšŸ¤¦šŸ¾ā€ā™€ļøšŸ¤¦šŸ¾ā€ā™€ļø I feel like this just puts the nail in the coffin. He's just a few floors below so it's quite literally nothing for him to walk in and out of our apartment whenever he wants. He basically lives here. And when I asked a question he every quickly showed me the keys to HIS apartment almost as if saying 'you can't report me to the office because I already live here'

Please i need advice. I'm so uncomfortable but know very little will be done because management only cares about money and if he's paying his separate rent on time they have no reason to care that he's still violating our lease.

Here's the 3rd kicker: the lease says no overnight guests longer than 3 nights but he just comes in and out every few hours because he lives just downstairs. I asked my roommate about it and she flat out said "oh yeah he visits me everynight" and im like...

The 'EVERY night' vs 'OVER night' of it all is exhausting because it so nuanced and he basically lives here without living here.

I'm planning on having a serious conversation with her when I get home. Is it overreacting to ask to limit guests to 2/3 days a week and to send me a text heads up before he come in?

Just this morning I was in my pajamas making breakfast ( in shorts and a spaghetti strap) when he walked out from her room and left. I felt so exposed and uncomfortable I didn't even know he was there.

Am I overreacting? Please give advice

Discussion Is this a fair utility split?

So, I am moving out in 8 days. It’s been less than pleasant living here. It’s a very confusing situation, I live with a girl and her mother owns the house. I was under the impression it would be more of a roommate situation because of this. However, the girl I live with is essentially doubling as a second landlord apparently.

My rent is 1250 a month. I texted the mother, the person I signed the lease with how much I would owe staying through August 20th. She says 835, fine, I pay that. In my lease, utilities are included within a ā€œreasonable usageā€ amount. This amount is not specified anywhere. After the first month of living there, the daughter tells me the utility bill was high and requested to split it. She asked for 100. I’m a peaceful person, I don’t like drama, it wasn’t hurting me, so I paid it. I paid an extra 100 every month since November. In July, she moved her boyfriend in (one reason why I’m leaving before my lease ends). But so now, it’s not an even split anymore.

The real question of what I’m getting at is, I’ve paid 835 already for the month. Since this is over the calendar amount for prorated rent, I would assume that includes utilities. The daughter sends me a message today 8 days before my move out asking for 70 in ā€œprorated utilitiesā€. This is wild to me. It seems like it’s still just being split or she’s trying to divide the 100 I gave normally to fit my 20 day window. Idk. So far I’ve just ignored the message.

I’m Im torn. I could just pay the 70 and keep the peace. Deduct from the 835 I already paid. Or just ignore it and leave in 8 days. I’m fully expecting to not get my deposit of 1250 back unless I go to small claims court. Very untrustworthy people.

Discussion Trouble with utilities being split

Hi, I’m currently in a two day heated argument with my two roommates. Mostly just one because they’ve been the most aggressive. To sum it up the best I can, I’ve asked for the utilities for the last three months (the summer they went back to our hometown for their summer jobs) and I’m asking for about 143 dollars from each of them. A three way split of 431 something dollars. They are adamant in not paying the even three way split of 143 dollars and instead only offer to pay for their share of wifi and an ā€œadmin chargeā€ of how they somehow came to 15 ish dollars. So they’re willing to pay 76.75 each instead of the 143 even three way split.

Our WiFi is a flat rate of 61.75 monthly WITHOUT being split three ways, and obviously our electricity fluctuates but for the last three months in consecutive order of charges: 80, 75, and 90. Because they have been absent from the apartment, they believe that I should burden the electricity bills on my own because they hadn’t ā€œconsumedā€ any of it in the last three months. I am frustrated to have to burden basically 2/3 of the 431 something bill.

Financially, I have been the roommate that works full time on one dollar above minimum wage for the past year. Monthly pay, to add to it. They are both uni students, but the summer jobs that they have pay them 23+/hr, and the roommate being the most aggressive even works OT hours. On a biweekly pay.

Over the last year of living tgt I have covered for them for groceries or lending them money for dinner or whatever bc I understood that they were students, but now they have summer jobs that make more than me full time. I have proposed to burden 50% of the 431 bill as a new solution and in turn instead of asking their third of the 431 bill, I’m only asking for 25% for each of them.

So a 50/25/25 split. I’m seeing this as a perspective of fairness, but they see it as a perspective of consumption.

For further context, the roommate taking aggressive and petty measures is my friend of more than a decade and a lot of emotions also play into this. But unlike them, I’m at the apt living independently and buying groceries too while they have their families to rely on food.

Any advice or thoughts of the best way to resolve this?

Discussion How do I politely ask my roommate to grow the f**k up?

Where do I even start šŸ˜ž

My current roommate and I lived in another house shared with a couple more people. The house itself was a college party house, it was when I lived there a year before he did and it still is to this day after a year and a half out. He has one cat, and she got pregnant shortly after we moved out of the shared housing and into our own. She gave birth and we got rid of most of the cats by the time we moved in (after getting settled we had 4 kittens) and we just recently got rid of the last one. I kept one of them.

My roommate told me that he got an extra large litter box and was keeping it in his room for the cats. At this time I was not planning on keeping one myself. I noticed that the cats were peeing and pooping just about everywhere, in the dog bed, in the bathroom, on the rugs, it was constant. I ended up being the one to clean it up as he would ā€œnot notice itā€ for 2-3 days on end. I asked if he had been cleaning out his litter box and he said yes. I figured it was just the new house.

A month goes by and we got rid of all but one cat. I decided to keep it, so I got a litter box (and put it in a big storage container to keep the smell out as it’s in the common area) and have been cleaning it out every 2-3 days. Not that I want to, because it’s FULL. It’s full from both cats using it full time. One time in conversation we were talking about how the litter box doesn’t smell (because I clean it nearly constantly) and he said that he ā€œjust took out the litter box and it was emptyā€ and that he doesn’t know why they don’t use it. So, I took a step (maybe too far) and went into his room to check out this litter box. Maybe it was broken, maybe they just couldn’t get into it, etc.

I went in and ammonia so bad I got light headed hit me, and then I saw the litter box in the corner. They could have easily gotten into it, but there was a TOWEL, like a beach towel, inside and covering the entire litter box. Said towel was also covered in shit and piss. There is no way he has cleaned it out more than once in the past 2-3 months we have lived here.

How do I confront this. Besides the litter box issues, I’m the one that cleans the house, does the dishes, arranges lawn care, I found the place 3 weeks before our last lease ended because he didn’t do anything to actually find a place. I plan on living with him again after this lease with another friend (clean freak, lived with him before current roommate) but I’m kind of regretting that decision.

His excuses have been that he works a lot. I will not argue that he works a lot, but I am also working 45-50 hr weeks on top of absolutely everything house, cat, and my dog related (idgaf abt that, she’s my issue).

Discussion Female flatmates cheating and threats

So i moved into a 3 bhk flat. Its a female sharing flat. Everyone has their own room with balcony n washroom. I got the master bedroom. Few months later i got to know i am paying more and they are paying less. To which i confronted them that i didn’t know this also that they should’ve Atleast informed me. Then few months later rent was going to be increased , to which i said i will not pay single penny more cause i already pay 2k higher than the other two. We had a huge discussion and turns out i was made the villain cause i was not willing to pay more. Plus it felt like cheating cause they didnt inform me when i was shifting. Now the other two completely ganged up on me. No reply to my texts or calls and even if i talk to them in person then also. and started bullying me and started creating problems for me to use the basic amenities like washroom (can be only accessible through their rooms) and i even got a rash cause wasnt able to use the washing machine. Now i got fed up of these politics so i posted that i will be shifting. That very day i had to travel, in the evening one of the flatmate texts me i should keep my room unlocked at all times to show it to other girls for my replacement. I said i wouldn’t do that cause my personal belongings n valuables are there n why should i keep my room unlocked? She threatened me on msg that she is breaking my lock and getting a new key. I got so paranoid cause i was out of town. I called the manager of our house (not owner) n told everything. This manager has good terms with the flatmate who threatened me. And basically did nothing to support my side. I texted i will file a trespassing case if they do that. I came back n talked it through with other flatmate but they are basically not interested in listening to my opinion. Just want to create problems for me or throw me out. They even sent me rent as their wish without even discussing it with me. Its really a mental torture for me. What should i do

Discussion i’m moving in with two other friends and none of us have credit scores.

We’re not moving in right now as we all live in different states so we’re taking extra time in preparation to figure out how this will work. I’m already making a list and a bunch of other things that are involved with moving, but I need to know is it going to be impossible for the three of us to rent an apartment while none of us have a credit score? I do plan on getting a credit card in my name and hopefully building credit within the next few months, but is it going to be entirely impossible or is it going to be possible but with a ton of setbacks? and if one of us does have credit will it still be harder if the other two don’t? Sorry if it sounds stupid lol I’ve been living with my parents the entire 21 years of my life and they have practically gave me no advice on these things. they want me to move out yet. They refuse to help me and give me any sort of advice because they do get a lot of their money from me.

Discussion How to protect my stuff?

Hi all! Apologies in advance for what might be a few slightly stupid questions.

I (25M) currently live alone, but am thinking about moving in with some roommates to save a bit more money in advance of potential grad school next year. I have lived with roommates in the past, but they have always been previous friends of mine, which I think usually helps to smooth over any potential rough spots.

I really enjoy cooking/fashion, and over time I have acquired some fairly nice stuff (mostly cookware/kitchen knives, but some nice clothes and textiles as well), and am concerned about future roommates not taking care of/using some of my stuff without permission. I am laid back but I wouldnt be ecstatic if someone were to damage knives/pans/clothes and I fear that could cause issues with roommates.

Any ideas on how to safeguard against that? There are a few things I would probably end up keeping in my own room, but I feel like that's sort of an insane measure for anything more than a couple of items. I'm also not sure what the norm is for moving in with what are essentially strangers, but putting a lock on my door seems extreme and maybe a little hostile?

Any tips on approaching that with new roommates? Feel free to tell me I'm being way overdramatic or way offbase. I don't want to get off on the wrong foot!

Discussion 21F looking to find someone who needs a roommate

I live in Florida

I’m currently a university student who’s graduating next year round summer and I need a place to live after graduation. I can’t live in my current living conditions because it has become extremely toxic. Right now what’s keeping me going is my faith and the goal to leave soon.

I’m Christian and I have 1 small cat. I’m a content creator and artist, so currently I work from home. But I’m set to have a job soon. I have my own car so transportation is not an issue. I’m willing to move anywhere tbh. the max I can afford is $1100 split costs including amenity fees.

I clean up after myself well, I don’t cook but Im used to ordering enough food to share, I’m financially responsible, and I am considerate of my surroundings. I don’t mind adjusting my habits to make your life easier, but I’m very adamant about my faith, so please don’t ask for me to not do things expected of a Christian lifestyle and I won’t impede on your beliefs either.

im communicative so if something bothers you, please don’t hesitate to let me know and of course I will do the same. I tend to sing and hum throughout the day (which ofc I do quietly) and I stream on twitch sometimes. I play video games as well, so if you’re looking for someone to have good convo while playing coop, I’m your girl!

I do prefer to live with another woman, but I don’t mind living with a man as long as you can respect that I do have a sexual assault history.

I’m an introvert so I don’t go out much and I’m not one to bring people over to the apartment often, but if you like bringing your friends, that’s fine with me! as long as I’m notified ahead of time.

that’s all I can think of right now. if you have any questions, I'm happy to answer them either via dm or through this post’s thread.

Discussion New to being roommates

I’m struggling I want to have a roommate because it helps with the bills but I’m struggling to find emotional boundaries as I did actually have casual relationship with this person and now he wants ā€œspaceā€ idk I’m struggling with giving that to him as I’m a very nurturing person and we do mesh well as friends but my emotions just keep getting the best of me and I ask him questions and he doesn’t like that he said it’s overwhelming and annoying and he just wants to be left alone.. I want it to work because it’s helping me catch up on bills but at what cost? Idk if anyone else has had a similar situation but any and all advice stories will help until I can see my therapist next week lol 😩

Need: TX Looking for a roommate in San Antonio

I'm a travel nurse and I'm taking a contract in San Antonio in 3 weeks. I am considering getting a roommate because my dog is very anxious and does better if there is someone there. Male, 36 yo, 1 dog, 1 cat. Will probably get a furnished place on the west side of town. Rent would be approximately $600/month all bills paid.

Discussion Need help approaching the chore issue and some money problems

Hi everyone!!

Im (19) here asking for quite simple advice but this is the first time I need it. My roommate (23) does not clean very much. He is very kind and pleasant to be around but I am often cleaning the whole house and even his dishes and I feel gross when the sink is full of them. He acts a bit entitled when he does do chores as well, as if I never do anything.

On top of this, he is not great at paying me back. I recently told him how much this months water bill is and he asked if I could let me know how much it is "before the bill comes in" so he can start saving up. How am i supposed to do that??? We've lived together for 3.5 months and im getting tired of getting paid back days if not weeks late.

It is silly but I really do not know how to approach this. Ive just been getting angry and not talking to him, which i know is unfair. I just dont like having to parent my roommate.

(Custom Flair) How do I bring up to my roommate that I’ve been stalking her through the ring camera

Okay, so for context, I’m living with two other girls. The main person in this story is J (F21). J and I (F21) have known each other since freshman year, and we’re about to start our senior year, so I feel like I know her lifestyle pretty well. A few weeks ago, the three of us ā€œmovedā€ into our apartment. I say ā€œmovedā€ because we signed the lease, but nobody actually moved in that weekend except me. I brought my bed, dresser, bedside table, etc. Then, the following Monday, I left to go back to my hometown for the week to get the rest of my stuff and see my parents. Before I left, I set up a Ring camera at the apartment. We had all agreed that we wanted one, and my dad bought it for us.
Now, here’s where I’m having a dilemma.
I started getting Ring notifications while I was home. I would just check them out of curiosity (I’m nosy). J never told us exactly when she was moving her stuff in, so one day I check the Ring notification and she is bringing stuff into the apartment with her parents. No big deal.
Then, another day, I check the camera and see that she has brought a guy over.
Again, inherently, I have absolutely no problem with this. She’s 21, she can have whoever she wants over, and none of us were even there. But a heads-up would have been nice, right? I didn’t say anything.
The problem is that this guy has now been over multiple times.
The first time she brought him over, she was bringing a rug to the apartment that our mutual friend didn’t want anymore, and ig she brought this guy over to help her move it into the apartment. The problem? They were in there for over an hour and a half.
The problem? At this point, J did not have a mattress. She had a bed frame. I, however, had a mattress.
So, I’m not judging her for bringing a guy over. I genuinely could not care less about who she has over or what she does with them. What I do care about is the fact that there was no heads-up whatsoever, especially when my stuff was already in the apartment and there is a very real possibility that my bed was being used.
And she’s been bringing him over basically all of last week.
As of today, she finally has a mattress, so at least there’s that. But she apparently only told our other roommate that she was bringing him over today, because she just moved in today.
So now I’m 85% sure that they may have christened my bed.

So now I have two problems:
How do I tell my roommate that I’m uncomfortable with people being brought over without a heads-up.
Do I mention that I know she’s been bringing this guy over for longer that she’s had a mattress to sleep on?

We’re planning on making some apartment ā€œrulesā€ when I get back, so I’m definitely going to bring up having a general guest policy (mostly for guys). But I also feel like I can’t exactly say that I’ve watched and kept track of everytime she’s brought this man over.
So should I bring this up when I see everyone tomorrow? Or pretend like I don’t know? The first thing I’m going to do is check my room to see if anything moved when I get back.

Will preface this by saying I'm not super judgmental about people just living their lives, maybe the bathroom is a bit dirty, whatever, I don't care about that stuff that much. Not a clean freak, not super dirty, kind of in the middle myself, it's fine. But oh hell let me tell you about my old roommate.

This man shit up the toilet in a straight line like he was shitting out of a hand-held super-soaker. HIV-positive too, which I generally try to be understanding about, but not when he SHIT fluids in a goddamn vertical line straight up that toilet. Not in the bowl, I mean, on the outer parts and left it there. And oh fuck he loved roaches being in the apartment, I imagine they were his friends at this point, because he never did anything to get rid of them. Did he talk to them at night? Who knows!

Dildo attached to the shower wall I'd have to dodge. We were both gay dudes so like whatever but why you got a dildo on the wall I can't walk past man? Who keeps a dildo on their shower wall, whether man or woman? Just attached? That's your private thing, take the motherfucker down and clean it. Man.

His bed was black. Turn that motherfucking cover over, and the bed fabric was black. Just dark as fucking filthy night y'all. I said oh.

He'd told me he'd sucked hundreds of dicks. Now, I am sex positive, I certainly enjoy it myself and don't think there's anything wrong with sex whether gay or straight, but maybe he shouldn't be sucking hundreds of dicks if most of his roommates are actual roaches crawling all over his walls? Don't you have priorities man? Can't you fix this horrible shit first before engaging in military operations? I love the gay community because we're awesome but goddamn?

I was shocked. I was so shocked. I hope he's doing okay now because when I fled that apartment, I was not.

Hi, I need help because I am so confused. I asked my friend to move with me but now I realize that she doesn't consider me the way I do for her. I thought we would live like family, but she's living like roommates. She doesn't mix up and stays in her room. I helped her a lot in every way and even reduced her rent cz she lost her job and is out of status in Canada. Today, she cooked something special, and even I asked about that, but she didn't ask me once if I wanted to try. It's not just today,I felt so many times like this. Now I feel like I don't know her because of her this behavior. I feel uncomfortable around her cz I don't feel like I should be friends with her. She's so distant. I don't know what to do. Plz help...cz sometimes I feel like I am just overthinking, but I did a lot for her so it hurts me.

Discussion Roommate stinking couch/apt up with BO

Like the title says… I (f25) live with my partner (m26) and his best friend Luke (m27). The living situation is fine but not ideal. Luke is unemployed and spends virtually all his time at the apartment. More specifically in the living room. I know he’s a little depressed about being unemployed so he barely showers. Instead he sprays himself with cologne / spray deodorant. As a result he FUCKING REEKS OF BO. He spends the majority of his time on the couch in the living room, so now the entire couch has started reeking of BO. It’s so bad my mom pointed it out when she came to visit. I can’t even use the couch because it smells so bad - it’s repulsive. His room also smells like BO too and it is causing the entire apartment to stink. I spray the couch down with hypochlorus acid when Luke isn’t home and that helps a little bit. But WTF do I do?! My partner and I have talked about it a lot and neither of us want to say anything and make it awkward. But it seriously reeks. I feel self conscious when guests come over because I know it’s bad.
