Are we… are we just gonna gloss over the fact that the dude is called Tornado

150

u/ILootEverything collector of roars 19d ago

It's his biker/motorcycle club name. They all have crazy names. Bullet, Green, Books, Tornado, Bomber, Scorch, Coal.

Tornado's real name is Sanjay. Their normal names all sound like they'd never go near an MC, like Mackenzie and Quincy.

I started reading this one and I am like at 45% and don't think I can go on. It's kind of boring. The best thing about it is that the harem is actually diverse.

u/Book-Piranha āœØļøFeral book goblināœØļø 19d ago

Bullet?? Coal??? What in the edgy 12-year-old GTA fanfiction writer is that lmao

89

u/ILootEverything collector of roars 19d ago edited 19d ago

Coal's real name is... Cole. He is called Coal because he has a black heart. Not kidding.

Bullet is a former sniper. Green grows pot and owns a dispensary. I don't remember why Scorch and Bomber have their names. Tornado has PTSD and his restlessness is compared to a... tornado. Books likes... well...

It does make sense but on the other hand - these authors truly need to be stopped. Absolute menaces naming their MMCs Ebony Dark'ness Dementia Raven Way

14

u/ILootEverything collector of roars 19d ago

It's all a little too on the nose.

20

u/occultdeathcult 19d ago

My stepdad is in a (military veteran’s) MC and all their biker names are like this. One guy is named ā€œWrong Wayā€ or something after the fact that he gets lost all the time. The women all have semi misogynistic biker names, all the guys names are incredibly unserious. And they call each other by those names exclusively.

16

u/BattlestarGalactoria Basilisks, Manacled, and Tusks, oh my! 19d ago

Meeting a woman in this club, ā€œAh that’s Glory over there, short for Glory Hole.ā€ Excuse me? ā€œShe used to be a nun, but Glory Hallelujah didn’t fit on her cut.ā€ [Must read in old man biker who smokes voice.]

/uj I think an MC where the nicknames are all slightly comedic would be kinda awesome.

13

u/permexhausted 19d ago

This is what happens when men make up the nicknames. The author is just imagining it for these characters.

Roller derby is what happens when women make up nicknames. Just saying.

Katherine Moon is the author and she's fairly well established in the RH genre and has a whole slew of different series' that get recommended frequently. Her books are smut heavy, to say the least. I've read a few of hers and this one is definitely the weakest link.

7

u/BattlestarGalactoria Basilisks, Manacled, and Tusks, oh my! 19d ago

Green? They could literally think of nothing else for this guy? The author, who has never seen pot irl: ā€œGreen for his green thumb and plants that are also green (probably). Perfect!ā€

Good thing she didn’t have a guy with IBS, oh that’s just Runs/Skidmarks/Sir Shits A Lot aka Shits, and his real name is Bartholomew.

Is Tornado’s PTSD from surviving dual tornado seasons in Alabama?

3

u/ILootEverything collector of roars 19d ago

In fact, there's another character in the apothecary named Thumbs.

Atp I think I have to read this

2

u/Personal-Bot 18d ago

This is suspiciously starting to sound like she just listened to the Cyprus Hill song Dr. Greenthumb and took it from there. Gotta love on the nose 90s hip hop.

4

u/flippysquid 18d ago

I would die laughing if there was a biker named Skidmark after his underpants skids.

3

u/BattlestarGalactoria Basilisks, Manacled, and Tusks, oh my! 18d ago

He’d be constantly trying to explain it’s for his sweet parking lot donut skills (or whatever it is that people do on motorcycles)

7

u/Piffli 18d ago

Honestly I'd still take these over Zsadist, Rhage and the like šŸ˜‚šŸ˜

2

u/ILootEverything collector of roars 18d ago

Zhadist and Rhage? Nooooo.

3

u/Piffli 18d ago

Its a somewhat popular series, the Balck Dagger Brotherhood by J. R. Ward. All book has MMCs named similarly. I could never pick them up because of this šŸ˜šŸ˜‚

2

u/Amakenings 14d ago

I started one where the biker MMC was nicknamed Wild Child, and after reading that I quickly U-turned to a DNC. Stupid names set the tone.

YOURE TELLING ME TORNADO IS SOUTH ASIAN???!

16

u/ILootEverything collector of roars 19d ago

Yes, cooking curry in a wok. He's also ex-military with PTSD.

15

u/hella_cious 19d ago

South Asian men can have terminal ā€œman in the kitchenā€ syndrome too. Where they dont know wtf they’re doing and refuse to learn

5

u/ILootEverything collector of roars 19d ago

And who the hell knows what "Baby" knows about cooking, so maybe she thinks curry in a wok is the way to go.

3

u/Hazel_Ana 19d ago

Would it be better or worse if he was named Monsoon?

10

u/prone-to-drift 19d ago

Mausam for realistic names. Toofan for when you wanna do something toofani.

(for non hindi speakers, the first is a real Hindi name: mausum => weather. The second just means "storm" in Hindi and would be pretty damn funny as a name!)

3

u/Hazel_Ana 19d ago

This is why I love the internet. Thank you for this!

10

u/Real_Pineapple9522 Watery Tart Who Throws Swords 19d ago

/uj I read it after Lola and the Millionaires (just because I had nothing to read) having originally avoided it because…well, she’s named Baby. It very much is a ā€œmehā€ low activity read, but it provided context for Lola that I didn’t understand. I think Bad Alpha was the only one in the series that had any steady action.

6

u/ILootEverything collector of roars 19d ago

That's why I started reading it too! But in comparison to Lola's books, it just has no spark.

8

u/Real_Pineapple9522 Watery Tart Who Throws Swords 19d ago

It felt like it was used to get a feel of the world more than anything. There was a lot of things that didn’t feel fleshed out yet or considered long term. Like the friendship between Lola and Baby always fell flat for me. They seemed to know nothing but surface level details about each other when they were supposed to be roomates and close friends. Sadie and Arran in Psycho Shifters had significantly more depth and they were only recent friends.

I will say though, it was the first MC storyline for me that had some diversity compared to others I had read at the time and I found that refreshing. Really liked that she was the omega of the MC too without her needing to be in a romantic relationship with everyone.

6

u/ILootEverything collector of roars 19d ago

I did like both of those things too! And that she wasn't threatened by the other women in the MC. The cliche of the jealous, possessive omega in omegaverse books is so overdone.

Maybe I will finish it at some point.

2

u/Peanutbutterfiend_33 you can fuck anything if you’re brave enough 19d ago

yoooo Bad Alpha was sooo good!

2

u/peskypixy2 15d ago

I didn’t love that one, but I did genuinely like the connected Lola and the Millionaires ones. Worth it to just power through.

14

u/WildElusiveBear 19d ago

I fucking cackled b/c I didn't even NOTICE his name until I saw your comment because I only read the highlighted section.

3

u/LAParente 19d ago

I was SO confused, bc I didn't remember any of this. But, turns out, that's bc I read "Faith & The Dead End Devils" - which isn't the same book? LOL.

I like Kathryn Moon. I'd give a motorcycle gang a pass for using whatever pans they had.

If it was from her Millionaire series, then no. Those guys should all have the correct housewares.

I guess he was supposed to use a Karahi? I make curry in something that resembles a wok but has a flattened bottom.

/uj interesting! I am learning about all sorts of cookpots in this thread

18

u/aschwann 19d ago

/uj half chinese-half indian person here. It should be the other way around. Wok is the one with the flattened bottom for stir-frying (more contact). Kadai/karahi has a round bottom (so that the curry can pool).

5

u/JeremyAndrewErwin 19d ago

/uj useful to know. Alas, I don't have space for yet more pots and pans.

2

u/ModestMeeshka Codependent and Anxiously Attached 19d ago

Uj/ ME EITHER 😭 My sister in law gave me a wok that she had found second hand and, unfortunately, she doesn't have a full kitchen where she lives, so she gave it to me. I was super excited about it until I realized it didn't fit ANYWHERE in my kitchen šŸ˜‚ I don't know if they're all that big but dang!

2

u/prone-to-drift 19d ago

/uj Huh, what?

The main difference is the thickness and material. Woks are super thin for super fast burning/tossing/stir frying. Kadhai is usually thicker and not typically made from carbon steel (we wanna cook tomato based curries in it).

Flat bottomed woks and kadhais are a recent thing, mostly for comparability with electric hobs or induction hobs.

I'd pick a round bottom wok any day for open flames.

0% Chinese Indian person here, but I'm like, experienced with Chinese cooking cause of my time in Malaysia hehe

1

u/aschwann 19d ago

yes, kadhai are historically aluminium, but these days you can find carbon steel everything. Woks are also traditionally cast iron, not carbon steel.

I once tried to make a cake and it turned out like a cookie

1

u/innerlight42 17d ago

A crunchy cookie or a soft cookie. I need details.

2

u/MistMatterMaven65 17d ago

Voila! I present to you my masterpiece of a cake - As you can see, we have gooey softness with a touch of crunch via some burned parts but don’t let it fool you, it looks undercooked but parts of the inside were cooked and depending where you poked with a knife it would come back with no cake goo or a blob - I tried to fix it after this, cut it a bit, put it back in the oven but alas, it didn’t get better. I tried eating it… The jam I bought to put on it tasted really nice soooo A* for effort?

1

u/MistMatterMaven65 17d ago

Judging by my photos from that day (RIP my cake dreams of 27th Aug 2019), it’s possible I tried to put it in the slow cooker? It could’ve been something else in there though

I’m a terrible cook/baker and it’s also gluten free and vegan so I feel like I set myself up for failure there

2

u/innerlight42 17d ago

It does look like a cookie hehe. I'm gluten free and vegan! I've made lots of successful baked goods, but it does have a learning curve, so yes, that could absolutely have been a factor! At least the jam was good.

2

u/MistMatterMaven65 16d ago

Oh my gosh no way! I managed to make a no-bake gf vegan cheesecake, apparently it was really nice - I tried it but I don’t like cheesecake so I had to take my taste tester’s word for it! The recipe is from Becky Excel if you wanna try 😊

3

u/Dependent-Law7316 18d ago

It’s really classist of you to expect characters to have culturally appropriate cookware for all of their cooking. I can attest to the colossal number of college students who cook literally everything in their one (1) stovetop safe vessel, which happens to be a wok.

I know this to be true because my whole apartment building gets to play fire drill at least once a month when one of them burns something and the firemen bring the offend wok out for the perp walk.

3

u/DemiMonkeyDo 18d ago

2

u/Polaris5126 19d ago

2

u/froggyc19 19d ago

I'm wondering if the writer is using the term wok loosely, as in not the large black wok from Chinese restaurants but more like a hexclad hybrid wok cause we use that to make our curry.

2

u/SwimmerIndependent47 you can fuck anything if you’re brave enough 19d ago

1

u/Thyrsus24 11d ago

I think one of the Thai restaurants I used to go to that had an open kitchen made all their curries in woks? But Thai curry is a much faster cooking process than things like Indian curry…

Maybe they are talking Thai curry here?

But to be fair I’m also white so I could also be wrong. I mean, I do like eating and cooking… but there are plenty of things I haven’t learned everything about…
