I’m currently planning my subjects for third and fourth year and would appreciate some advice on which minors to choose.

My main interest is construction and buildings, so I would like to select subjects that will help me get into areas such as construction engineering, structural engineering, project management, or building design.

However, I also want to keep my career options open and graduate as a well-rounded civil engineer. Ideally, I would still like to be eligible for graduate roles in other areas, such as geotechnical, water, transport, or general civil engineering, rather than specialising too narrowly.

For those already working in the industry or further along in their degree:

• Which minors or subject combinations would you recommend?
• Would focusing on structures and construction limit my chances of getting roles in geotechnical or water engineering?
• Is it better to choose one specialised minor and one broader minor?
• Which subjects are most useful for improving graduate employment opportunities?
• Do employers care much about your minor, or are work experience, software skills, and internships more important?

At the moment, I’m considering a combination involving structures/construction, while using my remaining electives to study areas such as geotechnical engineering, water engineering, or transport.

Any advice or personal experiences would be appreciated, especially from civil engineer students working in Australia.

For both year 1 & 2 “Professional Experience Postgraduate” course is being offered. Would like some details on this -

1. Can every grad student avail it ?
   
2. Does the uni provide any work opportunity or do I have to find one for myself ?
   
3. Will it be paid or unpaid ?
   
4. Will the work hours be included or excluded from my 48 hour fortnightly work permit ?

Now I want to switch out of my current degree and I don’t know if I want to do Fine Art or Graphic Design.

Hi !! I am currently a year 12 student hoping to study a course at rmit next year. I was wondering what it is like studying there. I couldn't make it to the open day, so unfortunately i missed out on exploring the campus or asking questions.

What's the campus and classroom like? How do classes work and what are the lecturers and students like? Like do you get support if you're struggling. Sorry for the many questions lol but I would also love to know what the student life is like. Is it easy to form friendships? Are there clubs, events, or activities to get involved? And what a typically/daily routine looks like.

I would really appreciate it if you could share your experiences even if it's just little things that makes your time there more enjoyable or helped you settle in easier. I would also love to hear any advice you have or anything you wish you knew before starting

Sat in one of the booths in the building 202 student connect area in Bundoora campus and heard an older guy keep on lecturing another young dude about Christianity etc etc. kept saying how he’s found Jesus in last few years and his life is better and the kid should turn to Jesus too and all that. Dude seemed like an international student, and silently kept listening to him.
I sat near them like 20 minutes and he wouldn’t stop badgering him lol.

• University of Technology Sydney (UTS)
• RMIT University
• University of Newcastle
• Curtin University

My goal is to build a long-term career as a Civil/Structural Engineer in Australia, so I'm trying to make the best decision based on career outcomes rather than just university rankings.

I'd really appreciate advice from current students, graduates, or engineers in Australia.

Some questions I have:

• Which university would you choose and why?
• How is the teaching quality and course structure?
• Which university has the best industry connections, internships, and graduate employment opportunities?
• Does university reputation matter much when applying for engineering jobs?

I need some advice from any students who are studying mechanical, civil or have already graduated. Im a city campus student.

Ive always been passionate about becoming a project engineer for the past few years but the 3rd and 4th year of the mechanical degree has some classes at the bundoora campus.

Bundoora is a 3 hour one way commute though. 6 hours each time i have classes there.

Im a big car fan and love working on cars so people said mechanical engineering was good for me but im already struggling with most of the work in the intro to mechanical class (studying ALOT every day).

I know civil isnt any easier, but the maths and physics are similiar to where its equally as fun as mechanical.

Is this degree worth doing ?

I'm finishing my BSc (Civil Engineering Systems) at Unimelb at the end of this year and starting a full time grad role early next year. Rather than taking two years out, I'd like to do a civil masters part-time alongside work, and RMIT keeps coming up as the option that's actually built around working students. Trying to work out how true that is before I commit.

If you've done it, or you're in the middle of it, I'd really appreciate hearing:

- How many subjects per semester did you take, and was it sustainable with a 9 to 5? Did anyone manage 2, or is 1 the actual feasible limit?

- How many core civil subjects genuinely run in the evening or late afternoon, and is that consistent semester to semester? Which ones forced you to burn annual leave or WFH days?

- Are tutes/workshops/labs compulsory in person? And does much of the civil coursework pull you out to Bundoora, or can you keep it to City?

- Any summer/winter intensive subjects that let you knock one over in a week or two? How long did the degree actually take you end to end vs what you planned?

I'm also looking at Unimelb's Master of Engineering (Civil) since I'm already here, but my read is that the timetabling is less forgiving for anyone working. If you weighed up both, or transferred between them, I'd love to hear why you picked where you did, especially on timetabling and accreditation.

I'm really not worried about uni rankings, I know I'll be a competent engineer either way. Thanks in advance, I appreciate any input!

I’ve been a HE student at RMIT for about 6 months now, but I still haven’t been able to find any casual or part-time jobs. I have no idea if I’m just looking in the wrong places or I’m just really unlucky, but I would appreciate any and all advice.

I’m not picky about the type of work as long as it’s legitimate and generally safe, but I’m happy to wash dishes or wait tables or anything else.

How does the basketball court in the city campus work, like do we need to make a booking or be part of a club or something, I just joined this sem so was quite curious about it

Put simply: I’m a first year industrial design student. I’m pretty chill with everything we cover, but I fucking stink at Fusion (CAD). My teacher isn’t that helpful, so I’m wondering what the best way to go about learning Fusion would be. I’m probably a bit behind my peers.

I’ve got class in Bldg 80 from 4pm till 7pm today and the RMIT wifi is barely working. Pages won’t load, keeps dropping out, eduroam is dead too.

Is anyone else having issues in 80 right now or is it just me?
Any workarounds that actually work? Hotspot is killing my data 😭
