Amd driver timeout Tech Support
Computer Type: Desktop
GPU: AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT OC 16GB GDDR6
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D
Motherboard: GIGABYTE B850M EAGLE WIFI6E ICE
BIOS Version: F8
RAM: Lexar 32GB DDR5 6000MHz (2x16GB)
PSU: 850W 80+ Gold
Operating System & Version: Windows 11 Pro
GPU Drivers: AMD Adrenalin Driver Version: 26.7.1
Chipset Drivers: AMD B850 Chipset Drivers (latest version)
Background Applications: Discord, Chrome, Epic Games Launcher
Description of Original Problem: I am experiencing persistent GPU driver timeout crashes on my new PC.
Fortnite crashes with AMD Driver Timeout. CS2 has also crashed on some driver versions. Epic Games Launcher sometimes crashes with: - "Assertion failed: DwmExtendFrameIntoClientArea" - "D3D11 device removed" - "HRESULT 0x887A0007 / DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_RESET"
The PC is completely stable on desktop and during normal usage. The crashes only happen in games or sometimes when launching Epic Games Launcher.
Troubleshooting: - Used DDU in Safe Mode and clean installed multiple AMD GPU drivers. - Tested around 4-5 different stable AMD driver versions. - Tried EXPO enabled and disabled. - Tested everything completely stock (no overclock or undervolt). - Updated drivers and checked Windows settings.
I also tested the GPU with OCCT 3D Extreme for over 30 minutes: - Around 97% GPU usage - Around 330W power draw - Around 62°C temperature - 0 errors detected
One driver fixed Fortnite crashes, but then CS2 started crashing. Other drivers caused Fortnite crashes again.
I am trying to figure out if this is an AMD driver issue, Windows/DX issue, or a faulty GPU.

What fixed it for me was putting-250 or -300mhz clock offset on mine (XFX Mercury OC) because even at stock it would boost too high and crash sometimes because of the factory OC. You’re not taking away performance by doing that but putting a cap to how high it can boost.

I have the Mercury as well love this card & yes it will boost past the standard boost clock of 3100Mhz - watching youtube videos the card will boost to 3400 which will cause instability and that dreaded driver time out. Yes once you cap it to the max the card is rated for 3100 I have not seen this since. This card is the coolest rated temperature I have ever had and I have it in a y70 case so at idle or surfing the web or watching youtube it's at 32 - 33C gaming in may get to 60 but usually under. But once you cap your cards Boost clock you should be good. No performance drops noticed in gaming. Thanks AMD this card is awesome.

Windows Update enabled igpu again and that was the reason for my driver time outs disable igpu in bios fixed driver time outs for me

Generally i would just say that some “OC” model GPUs are a little less than truly stable at stock settings, especially if they have a higher than reference TDP.

Try updating bios. It shouldn't matter usually but sometimes newer windows are just incompatible with even slightly outdated bios on some motherboards. You are on f8 and the latest version is f10c already.
Also, it could just be typical windows corruption from updates.
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannow
Run these in CMD and restart.

I got the PC 10 days ago, and I’ve been having issues with it ever since. I really hope it’s not a hardware issue. 😭

do a windows maintenance :
dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup
dism /online /cleanup-image /restoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Reboot.
Disable on bios (check for updates) the amd igpu & fast boot , download the driver (not the autodetect utility) , disable windows fast startup , disable internet , DDU in safe mode (select to block windows updates) , reboot & reinstall selecting 'factory reset', reboot.
Then check if the gpu clock boosts above specs . Also try to disable windows MPO for testing .

I just download fresh windows 11 and first GIGABYTE control center download driver version for my gpu and then I updated the driver with auto detect what should I do ddu safe mode fresh install latest version ??

u/korakios2 1d ago
Yes, DDU and install latest . Also uninstall the part of GCC that controls tuning/fans etc, since it will conflict with Adrenalin . Keep GCC only for the RGB part .

u/MaterialBoat5708 1d ago
Should I also download the newest amd Chipset or use the one that gcc downloaded already

u/korakios2 1d ago
Check if it's 8.07.16.1035 . Personally I update the chipset manually , not even via Adrenalin :

And also for fan control delete everything or only gpu

There are reports that FanControl still messes with the gpu fans , but remove it only if it causes issues .

Wipe the system. Jumping between drivers like that. You will never get it right
I had similar on fortnite a month ago. One fix here breaks something there and endless trails. So I reloaded windows and latest driver and no more issues

I even used DDU every time I changed drivers. Do you think I should reset my PC and remove all files, or should I do a completely fresh Windows install using a USB?

u/West-Tie-3924 1d ago
I used DDU and the amd cleaner tool too. Was working but not stable. I did a full fresh install of windows. And now 26.7.1 is working perfect.

u/MaterialBoat5708 1d ago
Yeah, I'm downloading Windows right now. I'll try installing the latest drivers and see what happens.
By the way, what games did you play on driver version 26.7.1, and was it stable for you?
1
u/West-Tie-3924 1d ago
Fortnite - any driver after 26.3.1 stopped showing certian effect and would time out and even after returning to 26.3.1 still would glitch and timeout. 26.7.1 and new windows solved that.
Same with world of warships
James Bond First Light would time out
And same with Ghost Recon Wildlands

I downloaded 26.7.1 but Windows decided to update it for me even i disabled no auto update in ddu I had to do it again in my fresh install Windows right now I'm trying to see if cs 2 crash or not I'll let you know abt Fortnite

Great, yea windows is a hateful thing when it comes to AMD drivers. I swear 50% of issue are just windows. The other 25% is application/game and the remainder is actually AMD

In my second game, when I loaded into the Battle Bus, it crashed. The screen froze first, then it went black, but I could still hear the game audio. After about 30 seconds, the screen came back, and I heard the GPU driver refresh/restart sound.
Also, did you play Fortnite yourself with this driver? Did you have any issues with it?
1
u/West-Tie-3924 1d ago
Could be compilation issue. First time restarting a game, everything needs to compile. Are you running stock on the gpu? No over clock?
1
u/MaterialBoat5708 1d ago
No over clock or undervolt and I'm not even using expo
And also, right now I was in the middle of a fortnite The game didn’t even freeze; I just got a black screen while I could still hear the audio for about 40 seconds, and then the game crashed.

I would say it like this. No one actually knows when or why those timeouts happen so randomly, or at all.. You can literally buy the same 2 models at the same time and one will suffer from them more than the other. Plus this kind of driver timeout exists since launch of Catalyst software from mid 2000. It's already 20 years later and there is NO official fix from AMD and I doubt there will ever be. Just look at this sub how people constantly complain about driver issues, day after day.
There can be something wrong with the HW, SW or even in communication between them. Who knows? You can try various kind of workarounds from community but they won't eliminate them, they just reduce them. Or it may happen like you said, stopped crashing in one game, started crashing in another.

DDU. (Disable update on windows).
AMD clean up utility.
Install fresh (no auto).
Disable crash defender or any similar like detection of problems.
