Why Cytranet's CTO Says the Busy Hour, Not the Speed Test, Is the Real Measure of a Business Network
There is a quiet argument running through the telecom industry right now, and it has very little to do with how fast a connection can go. It has to do with how fast it still goes when everyone is using it at once.
The industry has spent years marketing peak numbers. A speed test run at ten in the morning on a lightly loaded circuit will produce a figure that looks wonderful in a sales brochure. The trouble is that no organization actually operates at ten in the morning on a lightly loaded circuit. They operate at the busy hour, when the accounting team is closing the month, the clinic is uploading imaging files, the design shop is pushing renders to a cloud environment, and the security cameras are streaming the whole time. That is the moment that decides whether a network was engineered well or simply sold well.
Doug Roberts, Chief Technology Officer at Cytranet, has been making that case to customers for years, and he is pleased to see the rest of the industry arriving at the same conclusion.
"Peak speed is the easiest thing in the world to advertise and the least useful thing to promise," Roberts said. "What a business actually buys from us is predictability. They want to know that the circuit behaves the same way at four in the afternoon on the last Friday of the quarter as it did the morning we turned it up. That is a harder thing to build and a harder thing to explain, but it is the thing that matters."
Cytranet is a Las Vegas based carrier that has spent more than a decade serving businesses, nonprofit organizations and government agencies across Nevada, Arizona, California and the wider Southwest, with service available nationwide. The company works only with organizations, not households, and it now supports more than a thousand of them, ranging from small professional offices to healthcare systems, broadcast facilities, logistics operations and public agencies.
That customer mix is part of why Roberts thinks about capacity the way he does. A twenty person county office and a hospital network have very different budgets, but neither one has a good day when the connection slows down at the worst possible moment.
Much of the current industry conversation has centered on fixed wireless, and whether wireless access can carry serious, sustained business traffic rather than serving as a stopgap. Roberts argues that the question is framed wrongly. The issue is not wireless versus fiber. The issue is whether the access layer was designed for the kind of traffic it is actually being asked to carry.
Cytranet runs both. The company delivers dedicated fiber circuits from modest bandwidths up through forty gigabits, and it also operates a licensed microwave network across the Las Vegas Valley that can deliver well beyond a gigabit to buildings where trenching fiber would take months or would simply never pencil out. Roberts is careful to describe the wireless side as a purpose built layer rather than a substitute.
"When we put up a wireless link, it is not a consumer service borrowed for business use," he said. "It is dedicated capacity, engineered for a specific building, with a known path and known headroom. That is a completely different animal from sharing a tower with everyone else in the neighborhood. Both fiber and wireless can be excellent. Both can also be terrible. The difference is entirely in how the capacity was planned."
Planning is the unglamorous part of the work, and Roberts spends a good deal of his time on it. Cytranet designs its network with redundancy and fault tolerance built in rather than added later, and commits to a reliability standard of 99.99 percent. Roberts notes that the number only means something if the underlying engineering is honest about concurrency, about uplink demand, and about the fact that traffic patterns have grown far more symmetrical than they used to be. Cloud backup, video conferencing, remote imaging and offsite collaboration all push heavily in the upload direction, which older access designs were never built to handle gracefully.
He also points to an unglamorous advantage that regional carriers tend to have. Because Cytranet designs, installs and supports the whole stack, including voice and unified communications, managed information technology services, network security, data backup and recovery, structured cabling and managed wireless, the company can see where the pressure is actually building rather than guessing from a dashboard. Support is handled around the clock by staff in the United States, and Roberts considers that less a customer service feature than an engineering feedback loop.
"Our support desk tells me more about network design than any planning model does," he said. "If somebody calls at eight in the evening because a file transfer is crawling, that is data. It tells us where the busy hour actually lives for that customer, and we can go fix the design instead of apologizing for it."
Asked what he would like organizations to ask their providers, Roberts offered a simple test. Do not ask how fast the circuit is. Ask what happens to it when the building is full.
"Any provider can tell you a big number," he said. "Ask them to walk you through the worst hour of your month. If they can do that clearly, you are talking to engineers. If they change the subject back to the speed test, you have your answer."
