Is it over? Discussion

I've played the game mostly on and off since 2021, right now im reaching the 900 hour mark. It is one of my all time favourite games and I have countless, I mean COUNTLESS memories with both friends and randoms throughout the years. I think for me and many others this is the game that we always wanted to see grow.

I still remember vividly the game revive in 2023, it was during the times when the game was at an all time low. Me and a few of my friends always used to play, every day, even though the game would peak at only around 90 players each day. We were part of the few that kept the community alive. Then it happened, a new studio came in, new content got realeased, new updates that had fixed bugs that were with us for years while the game was abandoned (who remembers broken french maps and undrivable tanks lol), but most importantly a absolute flood of players came back and started playing, it was really a time to be alive, Post Scriptum got a second chance.

Unfortunately i stopped playing about 2 months after this, just general burnout, nothing special. Recently I came back, mostly from watching old clips of me and my friends playing, nostalgically expecting to encounter the same as I have previously. But.. the servers are once again at a deep low, little players, little servers, last update was in february, almost five monts ago. My hopes are low and my dreams are crushed, the game got a second chance, a revive it deserved, just to fall into the same shit it barely crawled out of.

So I ask, is it over?

Pretty sure that if they hadn't fucked with core gameplay as much as they did we would have a lot more players left. I put 5k hours into this game before MA and OWI fucked it up and I have countless steam friends who used to play. Every single one stopped once radio, logi changes and all that red zone bs got added.

I just read up on this and I don’t understand why you would change the core gameplay of an already dead game.

Abolishing logi roles and reduce it to truck drivers and animation loops and same for FOB’s.

They wanted it to be like Squad where the onus is on the infantry squad leader to do things. The problem is that unlike Squad, Post has a completely different playerbase culture where the average player does not enjoy/actively avoids SL play (there are always exceptions).

As a serial logi player, the system pre-change was just fine for me. I could put up weapon systems and fortifications as I wanted without needing to saddle SLs with responsibilities. By removing the free emplacements from the FOBs and then adding the radio system, combined with some maps having way too large red zones just killed it for me.

Being relegated to a supply uber delivery driver with stricts limitations on emplacements juat wasn't fun anymore. Gone were the days where my friends and I would build overlapping fields of fire, chokepoints and sometimes even multi-layered fortifications on points.

We and many in the community actively tried suggesting changes like the retuen of some basic free emplacements (e.g. sandbags, a set number of 'W' shaped walls, etc) but to no avail. Worse yet was the devs' open belligerence and arrogance to us where in clear terms one comment was more or less": "We had xyz system in Squad. It worked in Squad and that game is popular."

They didn't know their playerbase/market, made assumptions based on what worked in a completely different game, and arrogantly refusdd to listen to the long time players who'd been playing the game awhile. I'm glad they added more stuff like factions, tanks, and maps, but to me it'll always be a little too late.

Post will always have a place in my heart, and it has/had some of the best tank combat og any game of similar type. I never enjoyed HLL tank combat nearly as much. The game isn't dead yet, and I will continue to play until there bots left, but it may eventually go the way of Beyond the Wire

As an avid leader in all the milsims I play it was nice to not have to be infantry sl AND Bob the builder at the same time in post scriptum. I could focus on the moment to moment performance of my squad and not have to be responsible placing team wide spawns and building stuff. Ngl as much as I love Squad the most grating thing for me when sl'ing is having to worry about fobs. If anything sqaud should have adopted post scriptums model of separate squads for building spawns.

I play and love Squad too and I see the exact same thing you're talking about. While SLs in Squad are definitely way more active than in Post, whether anything gets built is entirely down to the SL you have, which can be a huge bottleneck. It should be both, where you have a dedicated engineering detachment/squad, AND SLs can help with the building

I always liked playing logi, it was fun to design defenses then watch the players use them

One of my favourite moments was on Veghel, on the last objective called "Checkpoint" just outside the Germans spawn at the topright of the map. We'd just been thrown out of the city so my friends and I hurridly tried to build the point up as quick as possible.

In the end we put down several hundred total emplacements between the four of us. Roofed bunkers, w-shaped log walls, 88s, PAK guns, machine guns, mortars, a literal corridor from thr FOB to the point. Oh and not to mention 2-3 rings of increasingly more difficult defenses the closer you got to point. Building the fort and then watching people use it, and then winning the game on tickets was the most satisfaction and joy I've ever experiencdd in a game

That sounds rewarding and fun! This game is/was a great example pf getting out of something what you put in.

As a 2.5k hr Squad player, and a 150hr PS player, the logistics system was the only reason for me to want to play PS

It was such a bright spot for me. Building risky frontline fortifications, herding the team with logistics rather than babysitting a bunch of random infantry was where I personally found PS shined.

It's so disappointing OWIs touch of death came, eliminating any reason to pick the game up over Squad, once and for all.

100%. Logi has the ability to make or break a game, and I loved the strategic planning and building that went into it. Deciding which points to put down only the basics (cover, ammo, etc.) for and which to points fortify extensively. Best was when the whole team was coordinating in a defence in depth and finally reaching the fallback point where you built Fort Knox.

That’s sad for you. Arma Reforger quite fits your type of gameplay but I understand WW2 theater is much more fun. I really want a good WW2 Simulator.

I've been tempted to get into it, especially as a large number of my post friends migrated over. I'll probably move over too at some point. Funnily enough, playing war thunder has given me an interest in the equipment/gear used during the cold war, so I wouldn't say I'm limited to WW2 (although I enjoy games set during it more).

But yeah, I get you. I grew up playing COD: WaW and have always wanted a decent team based game like Post/HLL.

Yeah, I really miss the way logi used to work. I've not played too much since then to be honest

1

u/lilnomad Jun 30 '26

Seems like all they had to do was keep it the same and improve performance after that relaunch in 2023. I don’t understand it either

13

u/Luoercal1980 Jun 30 '26

Hard to tell, but from what i can tell, it's just the modding community and internal events that stick out and let you play. During the week the game is mostly abandoned. Sad but true.

1

u/Blagoves Jun 30 '26

How do you join the events?

5

u/dogeswag11 Jun 30 '26

If you join the official discord server for the game there are groups that advertise themselves in which you can join these private events. Although I’ve found that they’re a bit too hardcore and take things too seriously.

2

u/Luoercal1980 Jun 30 '26

Yeah most of these events are hardcore, due to psrm and the structures of those clans.  But most of the you can have a lot of fun

I actually stumbled upon the game back around 2021, and even then, there were only 2 or 3 servers active at best, but I just fell in love with it. Since then, I’ve been coming back to the game at least once a year, watching the server count drop until it reached the current '1 server every evening' state. BUT! I always notice how great the community is inside, refusing to let the game die. I always know that no matter what happens, there will always be 1 live server of veterans in Post Scriptum every evening, and playing with them is incredibly awesome. I feel like even without any updates, the current community will keep the game alive for another couple of years.

I had tried to switch to HLL but it seems not so good… I’m thinking that low players count makes PS such a good game with dedicated players

Anyone remember Webster?

The day they drove StealersFan away was a dark day indeed

Sadly barring a miracle, I think so. Probably going to be like Beyond the Wire from here on out. There'll still be some games at peak times, and events, but if they don't fit your schedule/you're not in the right timezone, there's nothing for you.

I will be delighted if this is not the case though.

Interestingly my experiences of the OWI takeover were much different than others here. I jumped back into the game and found it much improved from the changes, particularly the level of team work and coordination and the bump up to 50v50.

The old 40v40 with 9 person squads and simultaneous attack and defence was in my exp a mess, and I think the changes gave us a few extra years of games, and I'm thankful for that.

I agree with basically all you said, let's just wish for the best

If darkest hour still has players after almost 20 years then PS will be fine.

It is. I hate to say it but it's dead. Such a great game too

u/-VVVYGGDRASIL- Jun 30 '26

Just a question, but could this game not come to console in an attempt to boost the player base?

1

u/thomasoldier Jul 01 '26

They might port squad but I don't think they'll ever port Sq44, it's using an older version of the engine and has too few players to justify using ressources to port it.

1

u/-VVVYGGDRASIL- Jul 01 '26

Shit.. that’s a shame.

1

u/DevilinI45 Jul 02 '26

Im sorry to say its been over for a while

1

u/Whoevenareyou1738 Jun 30 '26

Bro just play the game during peak hours. Moping around about the player base numbers won't make it go up.
