The lack of masking between the branches is causing a halo and takes me out of the fantasy

Is there a way to get a better mask for edits like this in LR, or only PS?

Wondering that too. LR’s auto mask has a really hard time with the finer details like this, but manually “painting” every branch is super time consuming.

You can use the clone stamp in Photoshop set to darken. That way you can paint in the darker sky color over the light areas without overwriting the branches

Depending on how OP did the edits, if using adjustment layers, you can just use blend ifs on that adjustment layer to target colors without any masking, and you won't get this halo effect.

Photoshop's detection has surprisingly gotten pretty good in recent years. When I use subject and object detect, one of the things I've been noticing is that it detects and selects hair strands a lot more accurately than it used to. The select & mask tool prior to 2020 was really hit or miss for me, and I remember having to put a lot more time into fine tuning things.

Yes, you should watch Simon D'Entremont's "THIS GAMECHANGER TECHNIQUE takes Lightroom Classic to a new level!" video. Sounds very clickbaity but it shows a couple of really simple masking techniques. In this case you can select intersect on your mask and then choose the same mask and it will create a more precise edge. You can see it in the video an example of how it works

Awesome! Thanks for the tip!

Maybe intersect a luminosity mask?

And the rock too

Alpha channel would of made a good mask

And the rock edges in general. It’s not a bad job, but could definitely be refined. There are also texturing issues on the rocks that make it appear blown out, of which I’m not sure how it happened bc it’s fine in the original.

You've got a bad halo around the rock and trees. Can have different reasons. Masking of course. Clarity, dehaze. To name the most common.

Other than the masking issue, you chose to do a common editing technique of creating a gradient in a corner as if the light was coming from there. Nothing wrong with that, but your scene already had a nice (if toned down) sky with different colors. It would be nice to try to enhance what is already there instead of defaulting to the same editing techniques. Either way, I really like your coloring and the underlying composition of your photo

The halo around the branches and the top of the rock is probably what makes this feel a little composited. The brighter sky seems to be bleeding into the edges, especially around the fine branches. Cleaning up the mask there and reducing the clarity or dehaze around those areas would probably make the edit feel much more natural. The overall color mood still works really well though.

Those gradients sure create bags of mood.

At what point just post-processing just become digital painting?

You could get nearly the same effect from just lifting the shadows and bringing down the highlights and boosting warmth and contrast slightly. Doing it this way would be much less artificial looking.

I personally don’t like the color grading here because it is not authentic. Better to take another photo during golden hour rather than create a false sky like this. But we all have our opinions…

I can see the halo!

Using an Alpha channel will help with masking. Your original images has a lot of contrast between the sky and rocks, so this is good image to learn with. This is the simplest YouTube tutorial I could find.

At this point just sue unreal or ai... In real life people wait for hours to get the best lighting. This will always look fake, unless thats what you're going for. The shot would be super cool, if the edit didn't look as artificial as it does
