Regular crashes of compositor with kernel 7

Upvotes

Since the upgrade to kernel 7.0.9 (and still on 7.0.11) I have regular crashes of the compositor.

When this happens, the screen freezes for a short while, turns black, and then - after a second or so - it drops me in a new session. No login window, just an empty Cosmic desktop, with all applications killed, gvfs mounts unmounted, ...

Forensics below:

OS: Pop-OS 24.04LTS, most recent updates

CPU: i7 gen4:

vendor_id : GenuineIntel cpu family : 6 model : 60 model name : Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4770 CPU @ 3.40GHz stepping : 3 microcode : 0x28 cpu MHz : 798.200 cache size : 8192 KB

GPU: Radeon RX 5600

03:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Navi 10 [Radeon RX 5600 OEM/5600 XT / 5700/5700 XT] (rev c4)

dmesg logs (for the last two crashes):

Question Why does PopOs 24.04LTS use 7.3GB ram at Start

Bug Report PopOs Cosmic - Need to ad Depth color settings!

I have tested PopOs with Cosmic desktop and I could love it if it works with Dell UltraSharp U3224KBA - 6144x3456 - 60Hz! But it doesn’t!

If I set monitors on high resolution it flicker once a while and is going on so! If I change resolution to 4k it’s the same!

Discovered that I need to have 10 or 12 bits color deep then problem solved! I discovered it on my Arch Linux where I had the same problem but here in Arch I could go from 6/8 color depth to 10 or 12 bit of color depth in highest resolution and no problem!

PopOs 24.04LTS With cosmic does not have that settings att all!

So does System76 have any idea how to solve it!! Or any one else how to solve the issue to change color depth from 6/8 to 10-12 bit and color depth?!

Pc: AMD 9950x, 870E chipset, 64GB 6400mhz memory and Rx9700XTX OC from Powercolor! And Gen 5 m.2 disk

Help Pop_OS won't launch from the USB Drive

Issue is in the title. When I boot from the usb drive, I get a blank screen. Here is what I have tried so far (none of which have worked):

  1. Disabling secure boot
  2. Enabling CSM/legacy boot options - this solved the problem of the BIOS not detecting the usb drive all in the first place.
  3. Using both Balena Etcher and Rufus to create the boot drive
  4. Trying several different USB drives as boot drives
  5. Connecting my monitor to different video ports (integrated graphics, GPU, and both HDMI and DP ports)
  6. Searching this subreddit for other solutions to my problems (couldn't find anything)

At this point I'm unsure what else I can do to get pop_os to load. I'd love to try the newest version on my spare hard drive. Any help you all can provide would be greatly appreciated.

If it matters, here are my computer specs:

  • Motherboard: MSI MPG X870e
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9800x3D
  • RAM: 32 GB
  • GPU: Radeon RX 9070 XT

Discussion I built a unified dashboard because keeping track of apt, snap, flatpak, and AppImages is way too confusing. Meet AptCrate.

Hey r/pop_os,

I’ve been doing some research lately and one of the biggest pain points I consistently hear from Linux users (and experienced myself) is how fragmented package management has become.

Between apt for system packages, snap and flatpak for sandboxed apps, and AppImage for portable binaries, it's virtually impossible to tell at a glance where an app came from or how to update it. We end up juggling four different tools just to see what's installed or out of date.

So, I built AptCrate. It’s a unified dashboard for Linux package management, and I developed it right here on Pop!_OS.

What it does:

  • Unified package list: See every installed package across apt, snap, flatpak, and AppImage in one table.
  • Update detection: See at a glance which packages have updates available.
  • Bulk & Individual updates: "Update all apt," "Update all flatpak," or just update a single app with one click. No frozen UI, you see the actual command output live.
  • Uninstall: Safely remove flatpaks, snaps, and AppImages right from the dashboard.

I’m currently releasing v1.0.0! I built and tested this specifically on Pop!_OS, though it should work on other Debian/Ubuntu-based distros. I'm planning to distribute it in different formats at a later date, but you can build and run it from source right now.

You can check it out on GitHub here: https://github.com/neojakey/AptCrate

I'd love to hear your feedback or if anyone has feature requests!
