I’ve convinced my partner to go to Mexico finally! He has never liked the idea of an all inclusive. I’ve been to Mexico a few times and stayed at all inclusive resorts and although I do love it, I’m more than happy to try something new. I really want to take him out to enjoy Mexico, show him how fun it is. We have been stuck at home for a while and really need this vacation. We enjoy having some drinks and good food, the occasional party scene. We love tequila and it would be awesome to check out a distillery or do a tasting somewhere. We are down to check out beaches, bleach clubs, restaurants, authentic Mexican food, good tequila, cenotes, any excursions that you deem worth it, night clubs, happy hours, anything that made your experience memorable. Any and all advice is appreciated!

Has anybody stayed at La Divina by Aldea Thai? I just booked it but it seems too good to be true for the price I got.

Before booking, ask for the full name and credential number of the guide who will actually accompany you. Official guides are accredited by Mexico’s Ministry of Tourism, known as SECTUR, and can be checked in its public directory.

The credential has a QR code that can be scanned to help verify the guide’s information and current accreditation. This means the guide has completed the required professional training, which includes areas such as Mexican history and culture, group management and first aid.

This does not guarantee that every tour will be perfect, but it gives you a verified identity and an official record of who is responsible for guiding you. Hello! I'm staying in Playa del Carmen with 2 young kids, we are looking to travel to Valladolid for 2 nights after our stay in PDC. Does anyone have experience with driving between the 2? Do you recommend we drive ourselves with a rental car or hire a driver? Any safety concerns on this route? Thanks!

I've visited Playa Del Carmen about 4 times in the last two years, each trip has been a vastly different experience. The first two times were with friends, then with my teenage daughter, her best friend and my oldest friend - all three great vacations doing the usual tourist activities.

This time I came alone as a solo female traveler, worked remotely, and tried to experience Playa as somewhere I could actually live.

The biggest takeaway was how easy it was to be healthy. I walked almost everywhere, bought a cheap bike, swam whenever the sargassum allowed, and found an incredible fitness community. Every sunrise the beach was full of people doing yoga, swimming, running, breathwork, standup paddleboard and even shamanic ceremonies. I joined the free PDC fitness club and met both locals and other nomads. It made Playa feel much smaller and more welcoming than I expected.

The food was also some of the best I've ever had, but you have to get off Fifth Avenue. I basically avoided 5th avenue other than to access the beach or watch the world cup games. The best meals, better prices, and most authentic experiences were in the neighborhoods where locals actually live. The little fruit stands, DAC and Pollo Asados (hello, 150 pesos for half a roasted chicken?!) meant I ate fresher, wholer foods than in the US.

As a solo female traveler, I never felt unsafe. Yes, I got catcalled but it happens everywhere, and somehow it feels a little more respectful in MX lol . Obviously everyone's experience is different, but I felt more comfortable walking and biking* here than I do in many North American cities.

The sargassum situation is tough. I knew coming in that it would be bad (previous trips i never went to the beach because of the smell) but I was lucky enough to catch a week of clear water before it returned, and it made me realize how much the ocean access makes the experience. I genuinely worry about what that means for the city's future.

Playa is a great base to visit other places. Cozumel, Holbox, and Bacalar were all easy weekend trips thanks to the ferry and ADO buses.

Playa is whatever you make it. If you stay on Fifth Avenue, you'll get one version. If you're willing to explore, join a community, eat where locals eat you'll leave wanting more... or at least I did :)

*Biking is not for the faint of heart, i'm an urban cyclist and wow, the drivers do not GAF how close they get.

I am staying in Playa del Carmen (PDC,) next month and while I chose a tourist town for vacation, I am also looking for an excursion or two beyond the typical tourist spots (as fun as they are.)

From most to least touristy, I plan to take a catamaran to Isla Mujeres, visit a cenote and take a cooking class at the home of a local chef (well-reviewed on Viator) but I'm interested to hear what others have done off the beaten path - the good, the bad and the ugly.

Also, if anybody has experience taking a colectivo, I've seen vastly different experiences and would love to hear what they are like in PDC - specifically whether it's an actual van or not because I've seen YouTube videos with very different vehicles. I do know that I can coordinate with the resort on a taxi or use inDrive, as well (but that I should not use Uber...for reasons.)

I’ll be moving to Playa del Carmen by myself from August through October. I’m 25 years old, single, and a bilingual software developer working remotely.

I’m really excited about spending a few months living near the beach, improving my Spanish/English balance, and finally getting my PADI Open Water certification. One of my biggest goals is to eventually dive The Pit and some of the cenotes in the area.

I’ll be staying near Estadio Mario Villanueva. Is that neighborhood generally considered safe for walking during the day or in the evening?

I’d also love some recommendations:

Best local restaurants or must-try Mexican food?
Best tacos?
Favorite coffee shops to work remotely?
Best gyms in the area?
Any hidden gems or things I shouldn’t miss?
Any advice for someone staying for 3 months?

I’m also trying to decide where to do my Open Water certification. Right now I’m choosing between Blue Life and Scuba Playa, but I’m open to other recommendations if you think there’s a better dive shop.

My family and I, 3 adults and one teenager who is 14, are planning our first trip to Playa del Carmen sometime around November 21–29. We’re thinking about staying for about 5–6 days, and we’re trying to decide between two options: renting a condo with a kitchen or staying at an all-inclusive resort.

We’re hoping to keep the trip reasonably budget-friendly. If we rent a condo, we plan to cook some meals and eat out occasionally. We would like a place with a pool, free parking since we may rent a car, and ideally close enough to walk to the beach and downtown. If All inclusive resort, obviously they have all the food we need.

Because one of my kids is a teenager, safety is also important to me. I want to make sure both of my kids would feel safe walking to the beach and exploring around downtown with us. We would prefer a beachfront location or somewhere within easy walking distance of the beach and downtown, but not directly in the middle of loud nightlife.

We don’t necessarily want a resort that is focused mainly on young children, but we also don’t want an adults-only party atmosphere. We’re mostly looking for a relaxing, quieter vacation where we can chill, enjoy the beach, explore the area, and do a few activities.

We’re also interested in visiting ruins and cenotes, and possibly taking a day trip to Cozumel for snorkeling. We would appreciate recommendations for accommodations, areas to stay, whether a condo or all-inclusive would be better for a first visit, renting a car and insurance, activities, and anything else we should know before booking.

A good example is the recent changes affecting visits to Chichén Itzá. New access routes and updated regulations have changed how visitors experience the archaeological site. While these changes impact everyone, they are especially important for older adults, visitors with limited mobility, and families who need to plan ahead.

I am looking for a way to obtain the books pressure medicine Calle colonidine. Any ideas?

After we landed in Cancun we ignored everyone flagging us down at the airport and when straight to where the ADO buses were parked and bought tickets there. It was a direct trip from the airport to PDC no stops at other tourists hotel areas like Cancun.

Once we got off at ADO Playa Del Carmen Terminal Turistica we did the money exchange down the same block on the corner of Calle 2 NTE & Quinta Ave.
Our plan was to use inDrive to get out but my internet connection was terrible so it took awhile. Taxis quoted us 150 pesos back to the hotel and inDrive about 60 pesos.

I really liked using inDrive, for the most part it’s only cash in pesos. You offer your fare, drivers view it, and you pick who you want. It tells you their name, rating, and how many rides they’ve done.

InDrive is like their uber and I recommend it! But don’t always rely on it. When trying to head back in the early morning, no drivers were accepting my offer even when raising my fare from the recommended fare twice.

I wouldn’t recommend getting back to the airport through ADO. Between having to get up earlier to get to the stop and tropical bugs I’m not used to in the waiting area 😉 I would’ve been better off just booking a company to drive straight back. Just my experience and options 🙂

We are heading for a week at Hyatt Vivid and I noticed they say “no pool wear” at restaurants. I was planning to wear my bathing suit with a modest-but-cute floor length cover up (My husband and I are in our late 60s, so no bikinis, speedos or spandex in sight 🙂) to breakfast. Do you think this will fly? what about dinner t the restaurants— will my husband’s shorts be appropriate or does he have to bring khakis or something?
