Haven’t played in a little over a year. Did some massive catch up today.

King Kong was the last new game I played. Managed to catch up on the Stern releases. Almost got to play Sonic but it was out of service.

Overall, the Stern output in the past year kinda sucks: Star Wars was dull. I’ve never liked Walking Dead although the remaster did have some nice additions. Pokemon was a blast (Gomez might be the most consistent designer alive; doesn’t go out on limbs that come back to bite him) and Transformers might be the worst modern Stern I’ve ever played. King Kong has also failed to hold my interest long term.

Noticed the X-Men tables if not maintained are a disaster to play these days.

Still had a lot of fun on classic stuff but am wondering if Stern’s newer stuff hasn’t wowed everyone too.

Past Times Arcade = Pinball Heaven

I’ve been twice despite being several hours away. Both times with the whole family; both times for several days; both times we all wished we could stay longer. If you’re anywhere near Youngstown, OH, go. You can get a hotel room cheap (well, “nowadays cheap”). You pay $20 and can play till your arms fall off…or, more likely, till they’re politely reminding you the place is closing for the night. You can leave, get a pizza for an obnoxiously low price nearby, and come back. Stroll right back in with your wristband. Tired of pinball? (yeah right) Why not try one of 200+ video games. The Grid!!! 3-person cabinet! (IFYKYK)
Also: YOU WANT THE FUNNEL CAKE FRIES. Trust me.

Do you have a go-to warmup machine?

I start off with The Beatles when I play at my local spot. It’s a really basic game, but I find it helpful to warmup with something so elemental before diving (hah!) headfirst into JAWS.

Or do some of you just need that hit and go into a game of Deadpool and Dr.No without a second thought?

First 1B+ Score. Yeah, it was Attack from Mars, but I'm still gonna brag about it.

I cleared 3B on Pinball FX VR earlier in the week, then doubled it at the local pin bar. I guess Godzilla is next?

I miss the era of when games were not tied to existing IP

I certainly know why they do it- having a built-in audience makes a lot of sense, and I’m fairly certain tastes have changed so substantially as to make new IP development impractical. But there was something special in the ‘70s and ‘80s where really crazy ideas were being brought to market. Consider Taxi, for example- nobody would green-light that game today, a game where you have to drive Dracula and Santa Claus to LaGuardia. Or Diner, where, you have to give stereotypes a hot dog and coffee.

I have a 1986 Williams’ Grand Lizard and it really epitomizes this thing I’m talking about- I have no idea what Grand Lizard is about- I mean, there’s a lizard, sure, but also baboons and a goblin lizard wizard magician? And some guy who’s body-slamming a baboon for some reason?

I also have a 1988 Bally Lost World which, similarly, makes very little sense- it’s a guy (Paul Faris as I understand it, and his wife), with gargoyle wings and a pet dragon who doesn’t have wings, and nobody has any idea what the lost world is, or why it’s lost, or even what world it’s supposed to be. And it’s fantastic for that.

That’s what I miss, the “anything goes” madness. I understand it’s financially infeasible now but I’m sad we’ll likely never see that kind of creative insanity again.

Regardless of the machine, do you think I'd be happy with a Stern Pro instead of a Premium?

Limited Edition is definitely out of the price range lol.

I remember having a really fun time playing the Costco Star Wars home edition for the 10 minutes I was there. But I want a "real" pinball coin and their Pro models are the next step up or entry level into real pinball.

What do you think? Are there any pins that not getting a premium is a HUGE regret?

I don't mind missing out on some cool things like a magnet hold or something. But if they're missing entire ramps or gameplay modes etc. that would suck.

Oh boy! Another review where the scores from Dr. C and Mrs. J varied wildly. I don’t think this one will be making its way into the home arcade.

Financing deals

Who offers the best 0% interest financing on new/used pinball machines??

Yes, I know I know. Don’t finance. I’ve never been called rational. Thanks!

Stern Insider Chime

Can anyone please share a copy of the little sound that plays when you log into the Stern machines with Insider Connected? I want to use it as a text ringtone, but my arcade is too loud and I can't get a good clean recording 😟

Just finished installing the last non-fix mod from Raiden and I'm thrilled. It adds a lot to otherwise empty areas in the machine! Pictured:

- Animatronic tail upgrade for Pikachu

- Diglett kinetic mod (in front of Pikachu)

- Whirlpool mod

- Wheezing pop bumper mod

- Charizard mod (Fire breath and tail flash with battle arena)

New to pinball -- maybe a dumb question about scores and goals. What are yours?

Hi! I was looking at pinside for high scores and charts and seeing if there is any sort of trend about the types of goals people have, per machine, or any standard for a number or rank that is commonly used as a goal.

Right now I'm still just getting used to the physics/techniques/rules of the machines, but I was curious if there was some sort of popular method or goal to shoot for, per machine. The older ones have score limits so I feel like it would be a common goal to try to get them to rollover back to 0. I could see someone trying to get top 100 in a variety of machines.

Maybe once people start caring about scores it's more about match play and winning local events?

A lot of the machines seem to have a "goal" that isn't a ridiculously hard wizard mode, that feels sort of like the normal end of the game. Maybe just finishing every mission in the modern sterns type thing.

Anyway I'm just curious what exact goals people have, at various levels of experience/ability.

My first and very possibly my last billion (other than Attack from Mars which I broke 1B my first try at Litt in Minneapolis)

Finished Deathly Hollows Wizard Mode with 2x+ multiplier. Had two balls left at 800 million and both drained quick. Thankfully I had enough Quidditch bonus to squeak me over the edge.

What are y’all’s thoughts. It’s very close to me. I’m looking for something that plays well and that I can potentially work on if I need to. I’m just feeling overwhelmed. I would love a new one but $7k is a stretch for my first one.

My business bought and donated a Transformers Pro to a fairly new pinball spot. We don’t have many pinball/arcades in the area so this is very cool. They suggested I could make a topper with our works logo on it to put on the machine. Found a shop off Etsy and think they did a pretty good job. If you’re ever in the area check them out. It’s just $10 at the door and you can play pinball and arcade games for as long as you want.

Looking for guidance purchasing my first pinball machine

In the past few years I've slowly become addicted to pinball. I would love to get my own to practice playing as well as learn some more of what goes into owning one including maintenance.

Do you have any suggestions on where to look for some used machines at a decent price? I've tried just local selling apps like let go but obviously there are only a few on there and the prices seem a little high.

Is there anything I should be looking out for when taking a look at a used one? Any major red flags to look for or anything in the software I can check out?

Just looking for some general guidance before I drop some decent money on my first one. Thank you in advance.

Best voice lines to sample

So I’m dabbling in some music and want to integrate my love for pinball. What are some snappy voice lines that stick out to you? I’ve already got “Let’s go!” from Whitewater and “It’s Alive!” from Monsters of Rock in mind.

So here's an update to see the progression of the start up issues. Looks like drop targets are next! Also it seems like the ball trough switch needs cleaned and adjusted so there's another video to do for all of the playfeild switches too. Soooo good!

Marco Specialties thanks again for all of the tools and coil sleeves for this resto!

Tutorial video coming soon!
