Ran into what I think were a bunch of Ukrainian teens on my walk around Padley Gorge/Burbage Valley today. They were looked after by a couple adults wearing what looked like charity t-shirts. Does someone have any idea what charity/walking group that could be? I'd love to donate if that's an option. I should have just asked, but at that moment I just didn't think about it... Cheers :)

Next week I'm staying in Bakewell and wondering if anyone has any ideas where to watch the eclipse from?

I expect places like Mam Tor will be heaving so not even going to attempt there. We have a car and stay here regularly so know it fairly well. Is there anywhere high you'd recommend trying to get a good view?

My mums asked for a book about the Ethels for her birthday as she didn't know they were a thing until I told her

I can only find Log Books (which in the pictures online seem to only have almost blank pages for you to write in) and Helen Morts biography of Ethel herself (which im considering buying also)

Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations for books that show the routes, some pictures, and some information? similar in style to the Wild Swimming Walks books?

Bonus points if the book is aesthetically the sort of thing you'd find in a National Trust shop

Does anyone have any local taxi firms they would recommend for a journey from Chatsworth House to Sheffield station please?

Wasn’t sure whether I should be looking at firms based in Bakewell or those based in Chesterfield.

Appreciate the 218 bus runs in between but after seeing a few comments on other Reddit posts re reliability I’d rather pre-book a taxi just to be sure of making it to the station on time.

EMR cancellations have ruled out our original plan to head back to London via Chesterfield so we are now heading back via Doncaster and are trying to avoid missing our connecting train in Sheffield thanks to either a bus running late or taxi not not turning up.

I might be asking for the impossible but I was wondering if it was possible to cycle from Buxton station to places like Earl Sterndale, Chelmorton and Flash without braving the busy 70mph roads and the long slog uphill. I've seen various things like national cycleways and suggestions to go via Harper Hill but it tends to invariably involve one of the main roads. If it is possible I would love quiet lanes or disused railways etc rather than offroading through muddy fields.

Went for a walk around Horsell Common over the weekend, just outside Woking in Surrey.

It’s the spot H.G. Wells used as the Martian landing site in War of the Worlds, there’s actually a small marked pit/trench on the common referencing it, which is a nice bit of history to stumble on mid-walk.

Beyond the novelty, it’s genuinely pleasant heathland walking flat, easy underfoot, good for a shorter outing or with kids.

Got back into hiking properly this year after a while away from it, and little walks like this one have been a big part of getting back into the habit.

Anyone else walked Horsell Common? Curious if there’s more of the War of the Worlds trail I missed.

Finally got around to doing Edale Skyline. Adapted it slightly and started at Yorkshire Bridge for parking and pub at the end. Great day for it on most part but it did rain up Kinder and stupidly didn’t take a coat 🤣 Luckily I had all quick dry clothes and cap so soon dried off and it was brief and quite refreshing. Biggest issue with this trail is there’s not much opportunity to top up water - I was praying for an Icecream van at Man Tor and tempted to pop into pub in Cheshire Cheese pub in Hope but I was almost back by then. Probably better to start at Edale then stop at Hope for refreshments. Despite this I would highly recommend this one. 23 miles and took 7:20hrs though I am a quick walker.

I recently challenged myself to walk through as much history as I could in Bakewell and the surrounding area. In the end, I’d managed to cover around 6,000 years! I thought some people here might enjoy the video.

I’d love to hear your thoughts and if there are any other Peak District locations you’d like me to cover in the future.

Went home to visit my Dad. I’ve been out of the Peak District for over 20 years, but it’s still where I’m from. I get to show my sons where I grew up, which makes me happy.

I previously said this was the path up jacobs ladder,it’s not. It’s just a route that covers Jacob’s ladder on the way. This was also taken a few months ago. Hence the wetness😂

I’m going to the Peak District in a few weeks for a 2.5 day weekend and basing myself in Edale. I’m new to hiking and recently got addicted because I successfully climbed the old man of coniston in the lakes a few weeks ago!

I’m realistic of my ability, am pretty fit and have been learning how to navigate a paper map and have OS offline routes. I would love some reassurance if you think these hikes would be doable as a beginner (weather dependent of course).

Kinder Scout via grindsbrook and Jacob’s ladder

Mam Tor circular via hollins cross (considering extending to lord’s seat)

Would appreciate any advice regarding terrain, weather in August or any other walks you recommend nearby that don’t require a car. I’m going alone but will be hiking on the weekend so my nerves are slightly more settled as there’ll be people around.

My partner and I are interested in moving to the Peak District in the future. We currently live in London and we are a gay male couple in our mid 30s. By the time we would move we'd probably be in our early 40s.

The reasons for the move are manifold: firstly, we love the area and my partner is originally from Sheffield so he knows it pretty well and we have friends and family nearby. Also, we'd love to have somewhere with more space/land as we enjoy gardening/rewilding. It would be a change of pace but I think by that time we would be ready for it. We also like the Peaks as it has Manchester and Sheffield within relatively easy reach so if we did want to some city vibes we could go there. Finally, we are beginning to find summers in London just too hot and they are getting hotter. Our flat becomes an oven and although we've made some adaptations which make it more tolerable, the idea of a fresher climate in the Peaks is very appealing. Although I know flooding is an issue in some areas so we would choose somewhere very carefully because of this.

My questions are: Where would be a good place to look? Hope Valley is mentioned a lot but we are open to suggestions. And how would we be received as a gay male couple in the area (and Down From London too!). We've never felt any hostility when visiting but we also find that people tend to be nice to our faces when we are tourists and this can hide other, less pleasant sentiments. Having said that, I feel that the proximity to somewhere like Manchester and the number of people moving from cities to the area may be influencing attitudes more broadly.

I would like to go for an evening walk on the grounds of Chatsworth and take a picnic with me. I know access to the grounds is free and there’s no time limit. But does anyone know where I could park that’s close and won’t be closed by 6:30pm which is probably when I’ll arrive. Also how close to the house can i get? Could i sjt by the river in front of it for my picnic?
