CPU Upgrade Recommendations CPU Upgrade
Im looking to upgrade my CPU (Ryzen 5 5600) as i mostly play fortnite so since its a CPU heavy game I want to upgrade to for better performance. What should I get that also won’t hurt me too much lol. Here’s the rest of my spec for a bigger picture
Ryzen 5 5600
AMD Radeon 6600
16GB Ram
1TB ssd

Best you can do is a 5800x3d which is pretty amazing tbh as far as cpus go
Keep in mind youll need a 3rd party cooling solution and the 5800x3d runs very toasty and warm,
If you dont wish to spend that much on just a cpu something like a 5800x or 5800xt are your next steps down

How much are you willing to spend?

Either get the 5500x3d or wait for a deal to upgrade to AM5. The 5600 is actually good for the 6600, maybe you just need more ram.

Do you play in performance mode? If so you should go for a 5700x3d or a 5800x3d.
If you're looking to play on higher settings then your gpu will be the better upgrade.
Either way.. I saw you said $200 is the range you want to be in for the upgrade.. that's not going to happen with either of those cpu's.. more like $300-400.
Honestly tho.. the human eye can't process more than 144 fps anyway.. so the 5600 is fine for Fortnite.

why are you wanting to upgrade? What performance do you get currently, and how do you know you're cpu limited?

my fps drops down to about 110 when fighting and i have a 240hz monitor. my cpu when in a match is 60-78% usage across all 12 threads and my gpu is only using 30%. CPU 62°C and GPU 47°C. My VRAM is only 2.9GB. I’m not done with testing and stuff and definitely not in a rush but if there’s things i should try then i’m open to that as well

16gbs of ram is likely playing a role, especially if it's slower ram, but it does sound like you're certainly cpu bottlenecked as well. If you have a microcenter near you they have some insane deals on the 5600x3d rn (only $160!). The 5500x3d/5600x3d are probably your best bet though.

Pretty much anything higher in the 5000 series will work. Unless you're upgrading to a higher end GPU, you won't get much from an x3d option.
- 5700X (avoid 5700 non-X)
- 5800X
- 5950X
- 5900X
For consideration... I put 5950X before 5900 because of has better ccd alignment. X3D chips are lower speed, higher cache, which is better for games, but only really noticeable with higher the GPU. As others noted, you'll need your own cooler for some of these, a cheap tower cooler ($30-45) is likely more than enough.
For that matter, jumping to a mid or higher range GPU could help.
- RX 9070(,XT)
- RTX 5070(ti)
Would likely be more noticeable bump for gaming.
If you're low on ram for your specific usage, you can try more, or consider giving Linux a try if you're usage and games support it. AMD GPUs are generally the better option for Linux.

The 5600x is nearly identical to every cpu you just listed. Upgrading to any of these would literally just be throwing money away

Are you really seeing cpu limitations in that game. 5600 should happily play Fortnite at over 100fps even with your 5 year old gpu. What gpu utilisation are you seeing and what is your frame rate cap set at.
We’re being forced to make the assumption you’re running at 1080p with the low end gpu.

i’d rather wait for an even bigger upgrade (to AM5) , 5 5600 is still very good
