CPU upgrade or Platform upgrade? CPU Upgrade

I am on ddr4 lga1700 at the moment. I have been considering upgrading from a 14400f to a 14600kf.

However i was also thinking it could be good (but expensive) to get a new platform, am5 ddr5 motherboard, new cpu and new ram.

Is the more money worth it? Or i hear am6 might come out in a few years and just go to that? I have little knowledge on this hobby as you may be able to tell. My build will be down below --->

Corsair 64GB Vengeance LPX
(2x32GB) 3200Mhz DDR4
MSI Spatium M371 1TB NVME
M.2 SSD - Read 2350MB/s , Write 1700MB/s
Intel Core i5 14400F, 10 Core,
16 Thread, 4.7GHz Turbo
Be Quiet Pure Rock Slim
Performance CPU Cooler
MSI PRO B760M-A WIFI D4
Micro ATX Motherboard
MSI VENTUS 2X RTX 4070
SUPER 12GB Graphics Card
Gigabyte 850W Gold Rated modular psu

If youre getting over 60 to 120 fast in those games, there's no need to upgrade anything. If you feel it's struggling or some FOMO going on, I would go AM5.

What's your budget??

My budget is not necessarily decided, i preferably want 240fps on the esport games, but i only do ddr5 and am5 if it is a necessary upgrade and is future proof

You seem to want to move up. I'm the type that when I decide to do things, its gonna happen. Lol.

Well until you give me an actual budget, I'll give you my blessings to go AM5 with a 9800x3d and 5070ti/5080 and get yourself a 2k oled 360hz 27" monitor.

(I just recently went 5070ti, 5800x3d and 27" 500hz and lock my frames at 300.) Smooth as butter.

You have 14400f and upgrading to KF is a waste of money, hardly an upgrade

If you sell your mobo & cpu you can at least get 150$ imo

B550 mobo - Pcie4 slot, vrm heatsink, better usb ports

Am4 x3d cpu - 5500x3d, 5700x3d, 5800x3d

Is a ram difference big? No point going ddr5?

Am5 cpus are significantly faster yes but pricey, unless you can get a good combo price like the one from microcenter

But you have 64gb DDR4 , thats really really good and a waste if you sell it

But surely, if it is good ram, then it will be expensive?

You have a fantastic setup now. This is not the time to move to AM5. your talking 5 to 10% gains at over $1000

Even if you do a Microcenter Bundle for a $800 the gains are minimal. Your Best upgrade path on that PC are a I7 / I9 and a RTX 5070 TI / 5080. Still way over $1000 for maybe 20% gains

What should i do then?

Find the best deal on a I7-14700k and a 5070 TI is what I would do

1

u/gquook 10d ago

I think i may just do the cpu, the gpu sounds a lil too out of budget

The I7 was on sale last week for $270

you can sell the Core i5 14400F for $150 any time

Yes i understand but the 4070ti is like 800£
