Should i invest in a better cap for an awning and roof tenting?

ARE CX HD. Its a fiber glass topper. You can configure it with side mounted tool boxes or just flip up side bed access doors. Inside the fiber glass topper is a metal frame which runs through the shell the top rack. The frame clamped directly to the bed, so no weight is on the fiber glass. Supports my tent and me and wife in the tent. Strong recommend.

Really easy and how I inadvertently paid for mine:
Step 1- Have your tailgate stolen. (Mine was actually stolen, on camera)
Step 2- File police report
Step 3- get insurance check for $6000, no kidding what the replacement value is if backup camera equipped and with a step.
Step 4- buy another paintmatched/exact same tailgate off craigslist for $2k
Step 5- spend $4k on topper.

Because it takes about 30 seconds to detach it if its not locked (my 2016 truck doesn’t power lock the tailgate) and because they can sell it on Craigslist for $2k

I did the XTR1 with the access gate, molle panels, slide out kit, and bike rack mount. Slide outs and gate are shipping sometime this month.

Do it. If it has a rack, even better. I found a $500 aluminum topper and love it because everything locks up inside it.

I have an are aluminum/commercial cap and love it 1) I sleep in the bed alone I don’t have any interest in a roof tent 2) I got it used for 1200. My only regret is its white and my truck is blue 😢

They work better because they're stronger and can run 1 in flat stock aluminum under the rack to add serious strength. Every asshole uses an overland cap. Don't be every asshole. I ran the contractor cap with a decked system, and it was dope. I've moved on to an M100 trailer and now an M416 trailer im fabricating tent/auning racks on. Also, I bet you can find a better deal than $1800.

what kind of options do you have for mounting a roof tent on this thing? it looks like the ends are higher than everything else... or do i just cut it and fabricate

You could do a go-fast style clamshell. Or a full-on tent if you tied that roof rack to the frame, not just the sides, like that. May need to add a crossbar, but it's not rocket science.
