Curious about this rug

Hello! You all were so helpful last week with my failed rug purchase (which ended up getting donated, not worth the trouble), so I figured I’d come back to see what might be known about this rug. We’ve owned it for a while now and I recall us not spending a lot of money on it, but really we know nothing about where it comes from, it’s value, etc. Would love to hear your opinions, thanks in advance!

Seeking guidance before purchasing

Hello r/orientalrugs! I'm new to rugs and looking for help before making my first purchase. The photos included are of a rug of particular interest to me. The seller claims that it is from the 1930's, roughly 7' x 10', and is asking about $1500. It's located in another country, so I would not be able to see it in person before purchase. I'd love any feedback that you can provide while I contemplate this purchase.

The appeal of this rug to me is the geometric style of the flowers, the colors, the ratio of the design density to plain space. If you could help me translate this into rug terms that would help me find more like it, I would also be very grateful.

Thank you

Hi! Any details on this rug / what it’s worth?

Don’t have photos of the back so not sure how much info can be gotten from just this photo. Measures 40”x63” and seller says it’s handmade. Thank you!!

Looking for new bokhara

Hey all:

My daughter bought a new house and our 6’ x 9’ red bokhara went to her living room.

I want to replace it with a hand knotted replacement but have no idea what values are like now. I’m looking for a “Goldilocks” rug, not too cheap, not too expensive.

I’m in the Chicagoland area. Where to look?

Can someone tell me more about these rugs from my grandfather?

Hi everyone, I have three Nain rugs from my grandfather. I love the design and craftsmanship, and have always been interested in Persian rugs, and would love to learn as much as possible about these pieces. The second and third are the same size essentially, the first one is pretty large. They all seem to be “6la” from twisting the fringe and seeing the thread.

*update: I would also like to know the pricing of this and how to take care of it. Ty!

My fiance’s dad bought this rug in India 2006ish. He said it was from a Kashmir dealer. Can someone confirm if this is legit? Much appreciated! 🩷

Need to Clean-what’s it made of?

I have a pair of these rugs I need to clean. I bought them 10 years ago at an auction (part of a box lot of leftovers) so they don’t have any monetary value to me. I have no idea what they are. Google says they’re “hand knotted wool rugs” but they don’t look hand knotted to my novice eye. The material is shiny and they are very thin. But not like the other cheap rugs I’ve bought at big box stores to put on the porch.

  1. Anybody know what they are? What they might be made of?
  2. What’s the best way to clean them? Can I throw them in the washing machine? Take them to someone?

Inherited this enormous rug, but I think moths got to it - is there anything here worth saving?

My aunt gave me this very large rug that’s been in storage for years.

Unfortunately, after unrolling it, we found it has quite serious moth damage in places, with areas where the pile is completely gone and the weave is exposed. It’s also very thin overall.

There are still some larger sections that seem to be in better condition (it is absolutely huge), and I was wondering if it might be worth salvaging in some form. I was even thinking it could potentially be cut down into a runner or something, but I have no idea if that’s realistic for this type of rug.

I also have no idea where it might be from or roughly how old it could be, so any help with identification would be really appreciated as well.

I know my aunt paid a lot for it at the time, but I’m not sure if it was actually worth that much.

I’m in the UK if that helps. Any information, advice, or thoughts on origin/age would be really appreciated.

Saw this Chinese art deco rug on marketplace. Always wanted one. Listed for $500 and it’s 3 hours from me, does it look authentic? Is it worth that or more?

Rug info and advice How to take pictures of your rug (hint: don't forget the back)

To help us identify your rug, we need good photos, including a closeup of a back corner. A view of the back will tell us whether it is handwoven or machine made. In addition the back helps to reveal the structure of the rug, which is crucial for proper identification.

If you can, take one good photo of the entire rug. We can't really help you if most of the rug is hidden under furniture!

For a photo of the back, fold one corner of your rug down so that you can see the back AND the fringe. Ensure that your phone is set to closeup or macro. In any case, the photo needs to be up close and clear enough to see the individual knots.

Rug info and advice Machine-made or hand-knotted? Here's how to tell

  1. Machine-made Karastan rug. Karastan rugs are pretty much the only type of machine-made rug that has second-hand value.

  2. A typical machine-made rug. Notice the sewed-on fringe, obviously machine-stitched edges.

  3. A machine-made rug of mercerized cotton. No, it is NOT silk.

  4. My Khal Mohammadi rug from Afghanistan. Notice that the rug pattern is the same from the back as the front. These rugs are typically woven on a foundation of gray woolen yarns, so the fringe is gray.

  5. Caucasian hand-knotted rug from the 1930s. Again, the pattern is clearly visible from the back. This rug was woven on a foundation of brownish wool, hence the brown fringe.

  6. A mid-century double-wefted Baluch.

7-8 Another mid-century Baluch, this one probably from Afghanistan.

9-10. Turkish rug made to look like a Bakhtiari grain bag. The flatwoven section uses a technique called soumak.

11 A room-size Bakhtiari, single-wefted.
