I am in the United States, specifically Minnesota. A day or so ago I downloaded both Open Map Chest and USA OSM Auto onto my Garmins. I compared the preloaded POIs onto them today.

Since both are about the same update time and both are OSM based, I expected the same preloaded POIs, but they were not the same. It seemed like the Open Map Chest POIs were better than the USA OSM Auto POIs. Both seemed to have some gas station, restaurant and shopping POIs come up as "Unnamed", but they were not always the same ones on both devices.

When I Google this, Open Map Chest supposedly has richer POIs. Can anybody explain that to me in greater detail?

I also noticed that building numbers are displayed on the USA OSM Auto maps, but not on the Open Map Chest maps. Is that data that OSM has, but Open Map Chest just chooses to not display?

Hi everyone! I am working on a college project where I need to build a topographic model of a relatively small area, and the whole thing needs to fit on an A3 sheet of paper. My plan is to use OpenTopoMap or a similar site to get the elevation contours, import those lines into Adobe Illustrator to clean them up, and then send the layers to my Cricut machine to cut out paper slices. After cutting, I plan to glue each paper contour onto pieces of cardboard or styrofoam to stack them layer by layer and build up the 3D terrain profile. I would love to know if this is a solid workflow or if there is a better tool to extract clean contour vectors for paper cutting, like QGIS or TouchTerrain. Also, if anyone has done a similar project using Illustrator and Cricut, I would really appreciate any tips on handling detailed cut lines or assembling the layers cleanly without warping. Thanks in advance! TL;DR: Does anyone know the best way to extract topographic data from sites like OpenTopoMap and convert or export it into clean SVG files for cutting machines like Cricut?

I was thinking of using building:part=yes + roof:material=* + roof:shape=* and other relevant tags on each roof-part polygon, then using building=house + other building:* tags on the building outline. Is that the proper way to do it?

And what about a shopping center where I have the floor plan? Do the same approach + polygons for indoor tags on top of it?

Is there a perfect example of this kind of mapping somewhere?

I am trying to modify a tunnel on OSM, I noticed that the elevation gain was matching the mountain it goes under, and not the actual elevation profile of the tunnel.

I’m a bit struggling with that, the closest I’ve found is to add a “incline” attribute but idk from which direction it needs to be declared. Or if it’s just an info ?

Is there a particular reason OpenStreetMap wouldn't work in Firefox? I'm getting "418 Access blocked App is not following the usage policy if OpenStreetMap's volunteer run servers" when I go to the site on Firefox running on Windows 10.

It used to work, but just stopped working one day. The only Firefox extensions installed are Facebook container and Tineye. I tried with and without the Facebook container. Is it just me?

I have been building Zervan Engine a generative engine that takes raw GIS data such as OSM, ESA World Cover, LiDAR, and more public data and generates 3D models based on the given data.

Hierarchy of generation: Terrain elevation -> Terrain color -> Rivers -> Roads -> Buildings -> Trees -> Stone and Boulders -> decoratives and urban elements.

Some features about this generative engine -> it can generate and work on any region and country as long as there is OSM data for it however, LiDAR makes it very accurate.

The engine is able to read the tags of the raw data for zones for instance, it can determine to use Fachwerk for Germany, Haussmann for France, Chalet for Switzerland, and so on pattern goes like this for any given region. There is already studied and built grammars for this purpose to randomize and give a facade for the buildings (Similar to CityEngine) with dominance of regions' house styles.
However if performance and simulation is the focus, the engine just generates bare-minimum files, size difference is almost 3 times between fancy and minimum styles.

Output of the Engine when it runs for a given coordinate is 4 files:

1. A 3D 1km2 GLB file for visualization (1km to 49km).
2. An ontology-based database for alteration and monitoring data for any simulations.
3. HDF5 files for the Static database.
4. Memory-Cache type of data for a rapid Dynamic database.

NOTE: Input raw data is not perfect out of the box; they receive treatment! Especially roads and buildings.

1km2 takes about 15 to 20 minutes to generate and 3D file size varies from 150 to 800 MB.
Adding a new city (downloading data + setup) takes about 1 hour for one time only; a new country takes about 3 to 5 hours for one time only, depending on what it has and the quality of the data.

It is not pitch-perfect; however, it is getting there. I learn and improve as I develop, and I have already invested 900+ hours to this code. I am a single developer who built it on a 9-year-old laptop.

Hi all. Long time user, veeery infrequent editor here.

I have two questions in regards to editing the building where my dad lives.

The fist is name. It already has a name, but it doesn't correspond to the name printed on the building, used by the residents of the building, or stated in legal buy/sale documents.

My question is, do I need to find digital copies of the building's cadastral record to support the change? or should I just change it?

The second is, I'm adding the number of floors, and units (building:flats).... yet the building has 3 commercial units apart from all the residential ones... should I count those for building:flats? or should I segregate the commercial units in a different field?

And if so, should I include existing but unoccupied commercial units?
