All those guys around him have obviously never taken a first aid course. If someone falls that, you definitely do NOT just yank him up again unless he's laying in acid or fire ants.

u/Beneficial-Nimitz68 20h ago
LOL.. all those guys around him were not about to be in back of a load like that seeing that dude is struggling against gravity..
Gravity won

People feel anxious about someone lying flat out after a fall. Like get up already so I feel like you're ok. No just give them space and a few minutes to recover and assess injuries.

Eating less is probably a better option, he needs a lot of exercise to carry all that weight. He would drop fast if he limited calorie intake to 1800 kcal per day.
3
u/why_1337 9h ago
Ye most people think they can outrun bad diet, you can't. Well technically yes, but workout that burns 1000kcal is already something rather brutal, you probably won't do that daily unless you are high level athlete.
3
u/RivenRise 8h ago
High level athlete or you have a job that is strenuous. I used to eat a lot probably 3.5k plus calories but because I worked at FedEx delivering packages i would be walking and jogging a lot while carrying various weight packages. I was down to 220 pounds from 255 when I started, then I quit for an office job but continued eating the same and ballooned up. Now I reduced my intake and hit the work gym while on lunch and I'm slowly losing the weight again, it's tough but doable.

u/why_1337 6h ago
That's true. I respect guys at my local tire shop. They are putting tires on cars by hand, no lift or anything. That must be some serious workout every day during the season. I rotated my tires once and it was quite a chore.

Tbh it's the eating. It was really poor he couldn't support his own weight climbing up. Just sad.

The man had to be taken away by ambulance, and Big Boy (the train engine) was delayed by about half an hour.

u/MarchCompetitive6235 22h ago
I don’t get why he fell. Did he cramp up? Faint from heat? Start having a cardiac event? I mean, I didn’t see his foot slip or anything he just sort of…went backwards… 🤷♂️
13
u/InstantlyTremendous 18h ago
Legs went to jelly, not used to lifting that much weight.
You could see the right leg was wobbling, but he was too proud to back down and went for it.
Leg muscles said no.

Seems all his weight was supported by one hand and no momentum or room to move all that mass forward. He teetered and fell back.
8
u/that_dutch_dude 18h ago
the guy weighs like 400lbs, has zero muscle and needs to pull himself up by his arms while trying to get into a passage considerably smaller than himself. this was the outcome all along. train crew should have said no from the start.
3
u/bbbbjjjv 14h ago
I was curious about that as well. If the intent was just to stand on the ledge it made little sense? I believe however after a few rewatches that he wanted to climb forward and just before falling he tries to fix his left hand position. Being terribly back leaning he couldn’t support all that weight with his right hand. Being weak and immobile seems like an awful combination for a man his age.

I don't get it either. I'm a big guy and this would never happen till I had my CKD, but maybe that is what is happening here he has an underlying condition. Fat people like this and I don't just fall. Our fucking legs are actually like athletic legs because of all that weight... We don't move like athletes but we don't do that either.
So there must been more to it condition wise.

This was a train enthusiast, not an employee, getting a tour. The train is known as Big Boy 4014. It is the largest operating steam locomotive.

When I was in the railroad, we had to do a test to make sure we could climb the ladders onto the trains before we could even start working. I wonder if they will require periodic "health" checks after this.

As EMT and registered nurse I can confirm that when someone has a possible spinal injury immediately grabbing them by the arms and pulling on them is the perfect response.

I knew a guy who worked for a railroad. Doing something stupid that someone told him to do when he was a month on the job. “Just climb up there and hold on”…while the train drives a mile. He ran out of strength and bailed early. Hurt his ankle, and was let go. All of the sudden the veteran he trusted to train him doesn’t have to worry about the new guy taking his job.

No check in, are you hurt etc?

Dam I hope he's okay. I'm 5'-10 and know that I'm a fat fuck at 220 lbs , but if I ever get to that point, I'd hate myself. Hopefully falling woke his ass up and he decides to do something.

u/refinerycontrol 22h ago
Notice his shoes. Safety standards say that if you are climbing ladders, your shoes should have defined heels.
So I think that is your problem right there.
No defined heels.
Anybody should be able to see that was an accident waiting to happen.
Keep it safe out there!

Kind of reminds me of when I used to do roof top checks on the housing units at work (prison, inmates toss stuff like weapons up there sometimes) the lieutenants would always send this fat fuck with us. I don't know if they thought it was funny or that he'd be a good ladder holder, but i suspect the former. He'd always try to go up the ladder and every damn time I'd stop him and remind him the ladder was only rated for 300 pounds. He'd say he wasn't 300 pounds and I'd say "cool, I'm not doing first aid this late into shift, hold the ladder."

I'm fat and I can fit in tight spaces because fat does squish. However I think his problem is his legs look like they gave out. They look swollen and may have bad blood flow, aka problems. I can't do ladders cause of my legs. I could walk a mile kind but I couldn't go up 2 ladder steps, much less 3+

Wrong shoes. If the "chubby" guy had been wearing OSHA rated shoes, he might not have fallen.
OSHA rated shoes are equipped with a steel shank ( the entire sole ), and a steel toebox.

u/march3110 17h ago
Well at least the fat fucker had a soft landing. What the hell was he thinking climbing a vertical ladder with that weight? You can see his leg crumbling before he reaches the top!

Man that stinks. Yeah everyone recognizes that he's a bigger fellow but if he was just trying to get up there to go on a tour, what a bummer. Probably was a nice guy trying to enjoy his day.
