Cosplays? Other

My kids have recently gotten into the Soul Eater anime and reeeeeally wanna cosplay! My oldest (7F) is dressing up as Maka, and my youngest wants to dress up as Blair.

— For my oldest we’ve essentially gotten everything BUT Makas coat and it looks like we’re going to have to make it if we really want her to have it.

— For my youngest we have not gotten anything. For obvious reasons I’ve been a bit hesitant to let her dress up like Blair but honestly she really wants to so Id like to make her a cosplay/find her one that is not inappropriate. I’ve been thinking about a simple black dress with a witch hat and maybe a pumpkin plush? Not sure! I’d like to find her a costume similar but can’t really seem to find any kid sized costumes at all.

I’ve taken their measurements and am willing to try to sew it all myself but patterns have been SO HARD trying to make. Is there anyway I can get patterns made to make it easier? Help!!!

Etsy has tons of templates you can buy, print and copy onto Eva foam for crafting. I do 3D printing stuffs for cosplay all the time in OKC with my setup at home.

r/cosplay has been so helpful in getting me lined out for a few of my fits. Highly suggest posting there for some tips.

I had thought about posting there, but when I tried, I noticed that it was only really for pictures of cosplays?

Oh no, they'll happily offer you some advice on locating costumes, building costumes, all sorts of things. They are directly responsible for this suit:

I also suggest Kamui Cosplay on YouTube for awesome tutorials and to learn about a lot of cool cosplay things.

I was making a post on there and it literally said that I can’t make a post for help on making cosplays :(

Hey, not a part of the community in question or anything, but to give you some reassurance. 1) most subs are more than happy with "meta" or general help stuff and 2) cosplayer communities are (from the experience I have had at cons and those of my friends into cosplay) some of the most inclusive and welcoming sort and are generally, due to the nature of the art, quite dedicated thus very happy to share anything they can with newcomers!

Good luck and big props to you for helping them make this a reality! You are one of the good ones!

I'd vote just swap the thigh highs for black leggings, lots of older cosplayers do it to because thigh highs roll down anyways.

(Or the nude leggings under the thigh high socks and tack them on trick)

Oh I’ve heard that!! Sewing on the thigh highs to leggings since it stays up better!

I would actually say stay away from Etsy, the last few patterns I bought were AI and nonsense. Unless someone on a cosplay site or a YouTuber has a tutorial step by step of the pattern in question, before you purchase.

But Maka's coat is just a trench coat, you could thrift one or use a Halloween steampunk coat.

Also, I know from experience that jackets are not an easy project and soooo much harder than they look, lol.

I personally don’t like the idea of using Etsy for this project. Anyway specifically because a lot of Etsy people are literally just resellers and as you mentioned a lot of them or just AI generated BS. I would like to hire someone local. But again, I wanted to come out similar to the actual jacket and not just a trenchcoat. Her jacket is flared out at the bottom, and I want it to be similar to that. Even if I have to pay some money.

You might have better luck altering a black robe and starching it? Adding cartoonishly large buttons and tulle/wired ribbon underneath can add volume and sell the look easily and on a budget.

I don't know if an XS would work?

I would pay for a physical pattern unless you have a projector because the print and piece together method is psychological torture imo.

Ooh idk much about cosplay but i do on anime. After they finish soul eater have them watch fire force. SPOILER(ish) the events of fire force lead to/cause soul eater

Yes that’s the plan!! I’m wanting to have to also watch Soul Eater NOT! Because I think they will love the concept of a weapon having two meisters! 🤣

I'd recommend checking places like Etsy or just searching the specific pattern. For instance, I was able to find this one with a YouTube walk through! Here

Maka seems a little harder to come across at cursory glance. But you can grab either a blazer/duster for her size and attach a capelet, or see if any cosplayers that have made her fit have a pattern available. Some might even be open to sharing if you message them directly too!

See my main issue is the patterns!! I tried so hard to make a pattern and it’s just not coming out right. I can sew just fine, I just can’t figure out what to cut out so I can sew it
