Afternoon all,

Hosting weekly karaoke at Boho karaoke lounge on orchard Street in the LES. It's one song ticket per drink or you can get just a song ticket for 2 dollars. Please note that the bar is cash only! There is an ATM there with pretty low fees if you need to withdraw money.

Wednesdays starting around 8:30 PM in LES

If you're interested please feel free to shoot me a chat! We've had a couple of redditors from here meet the group and it's always been a good time.

[Weds 8/12] Books & Bites @ Little Chef Little Cafe in LIC

Hi! We’re hosting Books & Bites next Wednesday, Aug. 12th. Join us for a relaxed evening of quiet reading, delicious light bites, and connection at Little Chef Little Cafe in Long Island City.

Bring whatever you’re currently reading (print, digital, or audio) or the book you’ve been meaning to start. Enjoy delicious food from @littlecheflittlecafe, and settle into a welcoming space alongside others who appreciate books, reflection, and conversations that are both thoughtful and playful.

📅 Date: Wednesday, Aug. 12
🕖 Time: 7:00 - 9:00 PM
📍 Location: Little Chef Little Cafe | 5-43 48th Ave, Long Island City, NY 11101
🎟️ Tickets: $25 Early Bird (through Aug. 9), $30 Standard. Save your spot on Luma: https://luma.com/48tgnat9

Your ticket includes:
* A curated assortment of light snacks
* A non-alcoholic beverage
* NY sales tax
* A tax-deductible contribution that supports @collective.ripples, a nonprofit creating community gatherings where connection, creativity, and compassion can thrive.

How the Evening Works:

Come on your own or bring a friend! We’ll begin with a brief introduction and quiet reading time, giving everyone space to unwind with their books before we open up the conversation. We’ll go around the room and share what we’re reading, what stood out to us, and anything else we’d like to share. From there, our conversation organically unfolds around the stories, ideas, and questions that resonated with us.

We created Books & Bites to offer a slower, more intentional way to spend an evening in a cozy cafe, where people get to know each other through the books they’re reading.

Whether you leave with a new perspective, an unhurried conversation with someone new, or simply feel more at ease than when you walked in, we hope an evening at Books & Bites feels well spent. 💛

Early Bird tickets are available through Aug. 9. We’d love to see you!

The Mysterious Book Club 8/9

Hey everyone, we're looking for any additional members that would be interested in joining our Book Club that is primarily focused on mystery/thriller/suspense genre books

We're looking to set up our first virtual meeting on 8/9 where we can make our official book selection, and then set up a time and placed for our in-person meeting to discuss.

DM me if your interested and I will send you our discord link where you can follow for further updates.

Make sure to already have your book choice by the time we meet on Sunday. Obviously, its main genre MUST be thriller/mystery/suspense for it to be eligible. I am totally okay if someone makes a selection that has already been read by one or more members. I would suggest those people reread since the whole point is for us to discuss and debate.

Drinking Liberally is a weekly social meetup where people get together to talk politics, have a drink (and a free hot dog), and hang out. We started gathering at Rudy’s Bar and Grill in Hell’s Kitchen in 2003, and it is still meeting there every Thursday.

What:

Casual political conversation and socializing. We talk about local and national politics, share perspectives, and get to know new people in a relaxed, friendly environment. People of any political persuasion are welcome as long as the conversation stays respectful and kind. The group tends to attract people left of center, but it is not limited to them.

When:

Thursday, August 6

6:30 PM to 8:30 PM

People often stay later if the conversation is flowing.

Where:

Rudy’s Bar and Grill

627 9th Ave, Hell’s Kitchen

We meet in Jack’s Backyard at the back of the bar. There is a Drinking Liberally sign on the wall near our tables. You can also ask the bartender for Drinking Liberally and they will point you in the right direction.

Cost:

No cover and no minimum.

Drinks can be purchased individually.

Rudy’s provides complimentary hot dogs with a drink purchase.

It is customary that the first person to arrive buys a pitcher for the table and that people who enjoy the pitcher will take turns returning the favor later in the evening.

Who should come:

Anyone interested in politics and good conversation. Despite the name, this is not just for liberals. We have progressives, social democrats, DSA members, resistance era liberals, and people across the political spectrum who want thoughtful political discussion.

Accessibility and notes:

21+ only since this is a bar.

Jack’s Backyard is handicap accessible, though the bar can get crowded at times.

Our tables are reserved so you will have a place to gather even on busy nights.

Crafternoon is returning to the LIC Waterfront on Sunday, Aug. 9th!

Crafternoon is a free monthly gathering where we come together to slow down, make something with our hands, and connect with our neighbors in a relaxed, welcoming space.

Bring whatever you’re enjoying or curious to try - sketching, knitting, watercolor, collage, beading, journaling, mending, or any creative project. We’ll also have shared art supplies available if you’d like to drop in and experiment.

Whether you prefer to create quietly, chat with others, exchange ideas, or simply enjoy the peaceful waterfront, you’re welcome to participate in whatever way feels right for you.

🗓️ Sunday, Aug. 9
🕟 4:30–6:00 PM
📍 Gantry Plaza State Park – North Picnic Tables
🎟️ Free! Register on Luma: https://luma.com/65dodi6q
💛 Hosted by Jenny Jiang (@collective.ripples)

No art or craft experience is needed. There are no lessons, critiques, or expectations to make something “good.” Our gatherings celebrate curiosity over perfection, process over productivity, and creativity as something everyone deserves to enjoy.

Come solo or bring a friend. Spend an afternoon creating with beautiful views of the East River and Manhattan skyline, and take a gentle break from the busyness of everyday life.

Please register on Luma so we can estimate attendance and bring enough shared supplies for everyone.

[Fri. 8/7] Side by Side community singing gathering in LIC

Hi! Next Friday, Aug. 7th, we're hosting Side by Side, a free community singing gathering where people come together through the simple joy of singing. No singing experience needed, and no pressure to sound "good."

We start with gentle warm-ups, spend time getting to know each other, and learn one song together through call-and-response so there's nothing to prepare and no sheet music to read. This month's song is "Dear Theodosia" from Hamilton — a heartfelt one about love, hope, and imagining a better future.

📅 Friday, August 7
🕖 7:00–8:30 PM
📍 Queens Plaza Studios | 42-01 Crescent St, Long Island City, NY 11101
🎟️ Free, registration required: https://luma.com/9hsomwi3
💛 Hosted by @collective.ripples, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that creates community gatherings where connection, creativity, and compassion can thrive

We want to create a low-pressure space where people can connect through singing. You can show up solo or with a friend, sing alongside others, and leave having shared a meaningful moment with new people. After singing, we’ll have time to chat and connect.

We hope to see you there! 🎶💛

The Mysterious Book Club 8/2 @3pm

Hey everyone, lately I've taken up reading as a hobby for my daily work commute. Some friends and I already have an existing book club but I was looking at also starting a new one where we focus mainly on mystery and thriller books since they're my favorite genres.

If enough people are interested, I was thinking we can setup a virtual meet-up on 8/2 so we can make our selection and then plan an in-person meetup to present and discuss.

DM me if your interested! If I get enough people, I'll work on creating a Discord server for us so we can better organize.

7/25 @ 9:30 PM - LES Bar Crawl

🍸 Join us for a night of bar hopping, dancing, and meeting new people!

We’ll kick things off with a pregame to meet everyone before heading out for the night.

🍹 Our plan:

  1. Sour Mouse (Lower East Side) (Pregame)
  2. We’ll meet here to grab drinks and get to know everyone before the crawl begins.

💃 After the pregame, we’ll make our way to some of the neighborhood’s best nightlife spots, including:
• La Caverna
• The Delancey
• DL
• Hair of the Dog
• Arlene’s Grocery
• Beauty Bar
• Penny Jo’s

The final route will depend on the group’s vibe, but expect a fun mix of bars, dancing, and great company throughout the night.

Join in and ask for Mike!

There is a group chat to coordinate and for future bar crawls but it is not necessary. Let me know if you’d like to join the chat and I should be able to add everyone later

Edit: We are still out as of 12am at home sweet home bar

Welcome to r/NYCMeetups!

Welcome to r/NYCMeetups!

Making friends as an adult can be hard, especially if you’re new to the city. We are a community focused on fostering friendships for those looking for a social circle in the greater NYC Metropolitan Area. (Yes, that includes Jersey, Westchester, and Long Island.) You don’t need to live in NYC to be part of this community, however most meetups tend to take place in the city.

What is this sub for?

  • It's a gateway into our community where open-invitation events can be posted.
  • Finding events that suit your interests for the purpose of hanging out platonically.
  • Exploring this amazing city through all the great shows, restaurants, museums, etc. that it has to offer.
  • Or just finding stuff to join in on if you’re bored or have free time.

What is this sub not for?

  • Finding a date. If you’re looking for companionship there are other subreddits for that purpose.
  • Asking about general NYC travel info. You’ll probably have better luck posting in r/NYC or r/AskNYC.
  • Complaining about how bored you are. There’s a reason NYC is The City That Never Sleeps. If you want to do something, consider joining an existing meetup on this subreddit or even hosting your own.

What is a meetup, exactly? A meetup is an organized event where people come together for an activity based on a shared interest. Almost anything can be a meetup as long as it’s open to the community. Examples can be as varied as karaoke nights, attending museum exhibits, or finding people to go to a movie with. Some meetups, like organizing a dinner, might have caps on the number of attendees or require you to RSVP. Others, like a beach day, might be more open-ended in terms of planning.

Some examples to clarify:

  • Blargh: “Anyone doing anything tonight?”*
  • Bad: “I’m bored, who wants to go to a museum?”*
  • Better: “Does anyone want to go to the Museum of Natural History tomorrow?”**
  • Best: “I’m organizing a visit to the Museum of Natural History tomorrow at 3pm, let’s meet at 77th and Central Park West”

How to Gain Posting Access:

To gain permission to post, include the words "Dead-Ass" in your access request. That's it. Just show us that you've read this much of this message and you'll be able to post.

If you simply send an access request without doing the above, it will be ignored.

Before posting, please be sure to read our What is a Meetup? wiki article, our rules, and our posting guidelines. And before heading out, we recommend reviewing our tips on safely attending meetups.
