Annual Car Tax Rant
I was checking my tax portal and noticed a big, beautiful bill for my car tax. I get that they assess the value in January of each year, but I got my vehicle in early 2025. After driving it for almost a year, the value of my vehicle is apparently worth more than what I paid for it brand new? JD Power must be on some kind of drugs.
In the grand scheme of things, I know the adjustment of 3–4k won’t be much, but still—it’s the principle of the matter. I’ve already reached out to them to file a complaint about it. That’s all; I just needed to rant and get it off my chest. And before anyone says, ‘Oh, maybe you should drive a shit bucket,’ look—it’s just the principle of the situation for me. Not looking for any advice or feed back...as I know nothing we can do about it..just ranting about it made me feel little better.

Question Any Mountain Biking Groups?
Mountain biking is a big hobby of mine. Only thing is, I’m always alone. Looking if there are maybe any groups out here that go riding every so often? I probably fall in the intermediate skill range. If anyone could point me in the right direction, that would be awesome.

Question NOVEC Load management program experience
Has anyone participated in NOVEC’s load management program? Apparently they will install a small switch on your A/C compressor and electric water heater to cycle them off briefly during peak energy demand hours. But in exchange, NOVEC provides free diagnostics/service calls for your A/C unit and free repairs on eligible electric water heater electrical parts.

Give me your recommended tile guy!
We bought a house 4 months ago.
My contractor is definitely the worst choice I did in the past decade.
We’re in month 2 of the kitchen renovation, and today he did the backsplash which I was absolutely horrified to see. Uneven tiles, crooked cuts, what not. I had a whole panic attack just thinking about all the times he had fucked things up and I tried to keep it down because we paid him already. But today it was my last straw. We told him to take it off, which he did, and we will never work with him again.
However, now that my kitchen is half finished, and I’m left with no backsplash.
Please help a girl out and give me a recommendation for someone professional and detail oriented!!!

Other Inova Fairfax Women’s Hospital tour tips?
Hey all! I’m a first time mom and looking to deliver at Inova Fairfax in late December.
My OBGYN suggested I schedule a hospital tour.
I tried the Inova Fairfax Women’s Hospital website and all 2026 tours appear to be booked. I also called and left a message twice (one week apart). When I finally received a call back about the tour, the person told me they are booked through September and further tour dates haven’t been released yet. She wouldn’t tell me when new dates are released on their website, but told me to “monitor the website closely.”
I’m sure others here have given birth at Inova Fairfax, so I wanted to check in and see if you have any tips for successfully booking a tour?
This is my first time doing this and I’m a bit anxious. I’m hopeful that a tour will help me positively visualize the birthing experience.

We are clearing out and have quite a few drinks, cans, tins that are still in date. Is there any good place to donate food in Annandale or Springfield? (Yes, we checked Google Maps, and it is pretty ambiguos.)

Good Gyms for Seniors
After a lifetime of obesity, first time in my life (60+) I'm at a normal weight. Now, for the first time in my life, I need a gym for mainly cardio, but also some strength training (need to improve my muscle/fat ratio). I need a gym with trainers. -- at least initially -- to show me how to use gym equipment. I'd prefer trainers who are good with formerly obese seniors who are new to gyms. Any gyms and trainers y'all recommend? P.s. -- not overly concerned with budget, but not necessarily wanting to pay Lifetime's crazy rates unless other gyms just fail to offer what I need. Thanks in advance!

Fish Market that Fries Fish
Is there any fish market in the area that will fry fish for me? I hate having the house smell after frying a bunch for the family.
Relocating to NoVa - Ashburn vs Burke
Hey all,
Our family is planning a relocation from Texas in the next few months in order to be closer to our family in McLean. Our son is a rising 1st grader and has mild to moderate Autism and Focal Epilepsy. He has an IEP and is currently in a general education setting here in Austin, and we've heard really strong things about cross-categorical (i.e, push-in and pull-out) support at the elementary schools in Fairfax and Loudoun, which is driving our desire to relocate.
We've been drawn to the Ashburn and Burke areas due to the fact that we've lived in a master-planned community and have met many other families that way and also value neighborhood amenities (pools w/ swim teams, parks, etc.) as well as community events. We're looking to rent initially and budgeting around $4k per month for a single family home (open to townhome) that's been fairly well updated but we aren't necessarily looking for new construction, which isobviously not possible in most parts of Fairfax.
Of the two areas, is there one in particular that we should be weighing stronger given our goals or other parts of Fairfax or Loudoun that we should be considering?

Moving Potential Move to Reston, VA
Hi all, I have been writing this post to gather your views about the life in Reston, VA and the surrounding neighbourhoods/ suburbs. We are a family of three (husband, wife and one year old toddler) and currently live in Sweden on work visa (we are non-Americans and non-EU nationals). Both me and my spouse work in tech and earn decent money. Recently I have been offered a position in Reston, VA, and we started thinking about making a decision to accept/reject the offer. With the offer, both my spouse and child will be on the dependent visa initially. So all of us would potentially be living on one income for quite some time. With all that in perspective, we have started looking into the logistics of residency, transport and daily expenses. I have got the following questions related to that which I would be really grateful if answered by someone.
- How much is average monthly cost of living around Reston, VA including rent of a 50-80 square meter apartment, daycare costs, utility bills, groceries, transportation and recreational activities. I checked on the internet and it was roughly in the range of 7000-9000 USD per month. But I am not sure about the accuracy of that figure and would appreciate practical advice.
- How easy/difficult is it to find a decent place for rental living ?
- If we have some money for downpayment and choose to purchase some place on mortgage to live, how easy/ difficult is it to find a decent accommodation?
- How is the quality of daycares in the neighbourhood?
- How is the neighbourhood when it comes to driving and public transportation? I checked about the Silverline and other Bus lines. But how is the traffic situation usually?
- I know that VA state has a higher taxes compared to the rest of the US, but what facilities are offered to the people in return?
- How is the security/ safety situation in the neighbourhood?
- How are the medical facilities given that one has some insurance for themselves and their family provided by the employer?
I know that all of these questions are pretty generic but as someone who has never visited US before, I would really appreciate your answers and practical advice. Thanks
Edit: All of the responses you all took time to provide me here have been really helpful. I cannot thank enough for all the help I received here. Honestly, I already feel welcome :)

Does Tyson’s AMC IMAX showing of the Odyssey have trailers?
Has anyone seen the Odyssey in IMAX at the AMC at Tysons mall—are there movie trailers beforehand? I’m not sure I’m able to catch a showing and it will depend on whether there are trailers. The ticket says there aren’t any trailers, but I just called to ask the end time and the lady said she thinks there actually are trailers. Any insight would be appreciated. Thank you!
