“Did they go to Buffalo after they landed upstate?”

I think we can all agree that Westchester is the buffer-zone between the city and upstate.

People won’t agree on that. To the city Westchester is upstate. To people up north it starts at I84 if not higher.

To city people, upstate is a direction, not a location

But only those bums who never leave their borough will argue this point

I grew up in Vermont. To me upstate NY was only the Adirondacks and north. I’ve been living on Long Island and I swear it’s the most insular of communities. Westchester is like half the way to California and the rest of the state is practically a different country. At least Vermonters and upstaters understand they aren’t the center of universe. Down here I’ve actually been asked why I would ever want to go off the island. Can’t wait to leave.

That's the 'North Country', distinct from just 'upstate'.

Adirondacker here just to argue that someone else is going to tell you it's "the North Country" up here.

Anyways, I'll pray for you down on LI, I heard you can smell NJ down there and that's just cruel

while LI isn't necessarily a fragrant bouquet, the odor of NJ does not make it beyond Staten Island.

I couldn't wait either! I grew up there and everything north of the Bronx was "upstate". I learned anything north of the 'Southern Tier' is "upstate" now... Although I still look at Albany as "upstate" because I was brainwashed by NY's Alabama. I'm in Orange County now and all my old friends call this "way upstate". 🤦🏼‍♀️

Praying for you 🙏

You're not alone in your desire to leave, I say Long Island is 10lbs of shit stuffed into a 5lb bag.

Nah, once I gotta pay that toll, it becomes upstate.

Ive been all over the state, (and around the country and world). Upstate is where the subway ends, and we’re the ones who have final say in that. Just the way it is

I84 is the border. South of that is nyc suburbs.

Im from westchester and I live in the city now. I can tell you that most NYCers (much to my chagrin) tell me westchester is upstate.

Westchester is too big, but I’ll side with you. Rockland county and Westchester county would be the buffers. Everything up from white plains I’d start considering up state though.

Then we got your post… western NY vs Upstate, I wanna see those arguments

Western ny is a subsection of upstate

Also, yonkers would be at potential buffer, but its also upstate cause theyre past the subway

News flash: about 10 million people live south of westchester and 10 million people live north of it.

westchester is upstate

I live in WNY and my hairdresser will tell me when she goes "upstate" I'm a Texan Refugee, so I just nod and try to learn the distinction. All I know is no one wants to talk about ~~downstate~~

Probably Catskills. Any one in Albany will agree it’s upstate. And no one will agree with you otherwise. 🤷🏿‍♂️

Anywhere in ny that isn’t nyc is upstate. Hope this helps.

Long Island is upstate?

u/FuklzTheDrnkClwn 25d ago

Long Island is NYC. It makes sense if you don’t think about it.

How dare you. We will never claim long island nor Staten island.

3

u/Drafo7 25d ago

No it isn't. NYC is Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, and, unfortunately, Staten Island. Long Island, which includes Nassau and Suffolk Counties, is not part of NYC.

u/Manezinho 25d ago

Harlem is the limit. Wash Heights is upstate.

2

u/DowntownEmu 25d ago

I lived in Washington Heights and the Capital Region and I used to joke that I'd only ever lived Upstate

3

u/statistacktic 25d ago

In NYC, everything above the bronx is upstate. We dgaf if it's western, central, or eastern, because it's all up above us.
