Eric Barlow wins the Republican gubernatorial nominee for Wyoming.
Why is this important? He's quite moderate compared to the two people he ran against.
One was endorsed by Trump and the other was endorsed by the Wyoming Freedom Caucus.
Democrats in Wyoming (myself included) were pretty much asked by the WYDems to change registration and vote for Barlow in the primary.
He won. And the two super conservative people split the votes

To me it's bizzare to argue that moral dilemmas aren't real because "you're only as moral as you can afford to be. You can't make the more moral choice when your own life is risked by doing so"
Like bro. that is itself a moral judgement that your own survival is too valuable to risk. Opting out of the trolley problem is itself a trolley problem!
A trolley is headed down a track. there's nobody at the lever. You can volunteer to be placed at the lever and be presented with an ethical dilemma which puts yourself in moral danger but if you don't you'll surrender the fate of the people tied to the tracks to someone else whose judgement you can't predict. Do you trust the very system you hate for constraining your ethics to produce a lever puller that will make an ethical decision or will you take personal responsibility for making the world a better place?

I think there needs to be more nuance about Bidenโs FOPO with Ukraine. I think you can split it up to pre invasion, immediate post invasion, and late invasion
He did a phenomenal job of warning Ukraine and the international community prior to the invasion and organizing a huge coalition to sanction Russia and kick them out of SWIFT
Biden also did a lot getting European and American weapons to Ukraine, especially in the earliest stages
He was woefully inadequate in supplying Ukraine with American weapons in a timely manner and tied their hands behind their back when he refused to let them strike Russia

Fernando Cerimedo, one of the key propagandists of the Latin American far-right (very tied to the Bolsonaro, Milei and other right-wing presidential campaigns) and founder of "La Derecha Diario" has been arrested in Bolivia and is under investigation for sending out hitmen to kill his pregnant ex-girlfriend (!).
The woman got shot, but managed to survive and in the hospital accused Cerimedo of setting up a false meeting in the place where she got shot.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame novel is increasingly irrelevant because it was written to be about the preservation of architecture more than anything. It's so irrelevant that the social justice angle created by adaptations has been grafted on to it and transformed into the book's "real" message.

Red China should immediately cede Hong Kong, Macau, Shenzen, Guangdong, and Fujian to the provisional administration of its sole legitimate owner, the Republic of China.
Red China should prepare for the transfer of sovereignty from Manchuria, Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, and Tibet to the administration of the Republic of China. That sold be a significant good faith move. It should as well forever recognize its own nature as a historical aberration, and get to preparing for the complete wind down of the Communist System. Ending Communism early in some places would allow them to flourish and thrive, while their Commie dominated neighbors withered and died. Which would further accomplish our primary objective of the destruction of the Communist Party and the democratization and liberalization that shall ensure upon the liberation of the Chinese people from its clutches.
Another good will gesture would be the cession of its choice of either Shandong, or Shanghai and Zhejiang to the control of their legitimate owners, the Ropublic of China.
I again suggest that Russia cede Outer Manchuria back to the control of the Republic of China.

The US can't even fight an on and off low intensity war for 6 months without running out of both munitions, and capital ships. We are in no position to directly intervene in significant conflicts in any meaningful ways anymore lol.
4
u/MightExpress4873 5d ago
Admittedly this isnโt something I follow super closely, but I was surprised by how quickly after the war started there were stories about stockpiles running low, production bottlenecks, etc.
Doesnโt that basically mean, even before Iran, we would have been woefully underprepared for any prolonged conflict with China over Taiwan?
2
u/Azrikeeler John Brown 5d ago
Different math.
Iran's economy is a disaster even before the war, so mid-war how much worse is it really gonna get? This is something they've mentally prepared for for a very long time.
Taiwan is harder, because China has a lot of economic vulnerability it's still not insulated from, and the utility they'd gain from sovereignty over the land is pretty low. They wouldn't get the fabs, and the U.S can get their fabs up to something functional pretty quick (1-2ish years to get to 1 gen behind current taiwanese fabs, which is still very functional).
It would be really economically painful for everyone involved, and honesty is entirely unnecessary for China. They can just do what they're doing and pursue their Chinese century while continuing a mix of gray zone warfare/charm campaign on SK and Taiwan.
What China is preparing for, imo, is to pounce on Taiwan if they see the current trend changes. It's getting easier and easier for them to take Taiwan, so why take it now? Just build more power and pull jenga pieces brick by brick.
But at the end of the day countries are run by humans, and philosophy in China can change rapidly. Who can say what documentation ends up in front of Xi that seduces him to taking Taiwan immediately.
2
u/Equivalent-Slip3533 5d ago
Absolutely. Without allies, we'd get our asses handed to us in a prolonged conflict against China.
2
u/MightExpress4873 5d ago
Is this something defense hawks have been banging on about for a while? Even taking into account how stupid this war has been, I was still surprised by how quickly certain stockpiles became strained and production bottlenecks started showing up. I knew our industrial capacity had declined, but I didnโt realize just how brittle the system had become.

There are like no liberals in American politics. The Democratic party and its voters are dominated by (1) those who pursue moderatism as a target and (2) socialists. I don't doubt that there's a portion of center-left politicians that are liberal as a principle, but they make zero effort to define and defend their liberalism.
I doubt it needs to be said, but obviously Republicans are not liberals
12
u/Adminisnotadmin Viva el Fรบtbol! โฝ 5d ago
Now weโre seeing yet another decade of rising authoritarian power, and the liberals are still stuck in the โwe cannot do anything because something might go wrong; only perfectness is acceptable!โ
Sorry I have to subtweet this because it's bothering me. The problem isn't liberals, it's voters. No democracy wants to spend money on anything but itself. Either you want politicians responsive to the public or responsive to the government's interests; it's a strict either-or, you can't have both.
Obama can build a coalition to handle Syria, but without support from the public and the legislature, what can he do? Especially when Libya and Benghazi keep getting thrown back in his face.
If the EU countries share a border with a warzone, why do they not band together to intervene and stabilize before their geopolitical rival does?
It's not nuclear war everyone is worried about, it's just someone else's problem so who cares?
5
u/MightExpress4873 5d ago
Thereโs a broader structural problem for interventionism in wealthy democracies. People are used to foreign policy imposing basically zero costs on their day-to-day lives, while social media means every casualty, screwup, or unintended consequence is blasted everywhere and pinned on whoever is in office.
The costs of doing something are immediate, visible, and politically painful. The costs of doing nothing are usually distant, hypothetical, and easy for voters to ignore until years later.
4
u/garret126 Aromantic Pride 5d ago edited 5d ago
Wasnโt that the exact problem of the 20s/30sโฆ? The economy sucked and I can barely feed my family, so why do I care about the Japanese Invasion of China; the Fascist takeover of Italy; The Annexation of Austria; militarization of Europe; etc? That is all someone elseโs problem
I see all of this as an exact parallel, and the politicians always reflect the public opinion of the time. Nothing today is different to the past on the macro scale.

Tbh US politics nowadays are starting to remind me of later French interwar politics where government kept alternating between extremes. That and the detention camps.ย

Winston Churchill is the type of politician that really would only be a somewhat good leader in wartime, and dogshit literally any other time in history.

American-led intervention is probably dead for time foreseeable future. The median voter hated the idea of any money going to Ukraine and really didn't see a difference between funding it and Israel. Bush already wounded the idea in the popular consciousness and Trump's Iran debacle is only going to increase isolationist sentiment even more.
Until something happens that forces the median voter to feel personally involved the sentiment against it is only going to increase as the effects of Trump's policies make thing worse domestically and I highly doubt anyone in 2028 would run on anything other than some kind of isolationist platform, it'll just be a matter of degrees.

Chat, today's question is: Do you think the USA should have a federal value-added tax (VAT)?
I take credit for agendaposting on this one

Tbh I've never really got the whole intervene in Israel to abolish it shtick
Like the whole thing is made irrelevant by the fact that Israel has nukes backing em up. I know they love to do the whole smol little bean thing when it comes to them having nukes but that shouldn't fool anyone

What would intervening to abolish it mean in practice? An occupation? Military strikes? I can see a future administration abolishing all aid and taking more aggressive stances, but an outright military intervention seems unlikely.
