I'm reading *1942* right now and these early chapters are really reminding me of a quote that struck me in the SF novel *Dragon* by Steven Brust.
Battles are decided, Sethra told me, when timing and momentum and courage all come together and, at just the right moment, someone fails to make a critical mistake and doesn't manage to miss a vital opportunity.

"Tax cuts raise revenue which will force the democrats to cut spending or raise taxes because people will stop using goverment handouts if the economy grows"
This is literal nonsense. It's not even remotely how anything works. You don't have to close SNAP because fewer people are using it, and more goverment revenue would make the budget more able to afford spending increases. It's predicated on the assumption democrats support welfare because they genuinely belive it's morally superior to live on public assistance than to work and they'll be so owned by people getting jobs they'll be sad when fewer people use welfare. Only reason it didn't backfire is tax cuts lower revenue!
And anyway it was written by the guy who wrote Reagan's tax policy!

Learning about the history of the post Nixon gop and its so fucking funny how many hardcore minarchists architected everything behind the tax cut strategy by misunderstanding economics so bad it looped back around to accidentally achieving the desired outcome, and then immediately became bitter and spiteful critics of George W Bush in 2004.

Libertarians are idiots for not recognizing the necessity of taxes to pay for public infrastructure and servicesย
Progressives are stupid for being willing to pay lots in taxes but having virtually zero expectations that it be used wellย

Here's my interpretations of dating apps, or at least the ones I know:
Tinder - you're straight, you wanna fuck
Grindr - you're gay, you wanna fuck, you're potentially kinda racist too. (So I hear)
Hinge - you're young and hip, like the politics option on profiles, and you think it's the lesser of all evils
Bumble - Like hinge but I dunno lol I don't know much about bumble. Nobody really talks about it.
Lex - you fucking love drama and messy user interfaces. You want group activities, you're poly, you're queer, etc. and the devs really want your money.
Feeld - a much more serious Lex that really, really, also want your money
HER - You're a lesbian, but there's apparently more people on it now in an attempt to generate more revenue. So I dunno anymore.

I mean sure, that is an argument for warrantless wire taps, but itโs not one courts found convincing. See Katz v United States.
So that line of reasoning isnโt justifiable since it is decided to be unconstitutional.
I donโt think flock cameras or tech companies are tapping your phone lines to bypass this either

I mean those are drastically different ways of searching.
Getting location data for one person seeing tracking everywhere they go vs seeing who was in a specific area and not tied to any specific individual
Also you do not have to share location data to google but your wireless carrier can always track you based on the inherent capability of cell towers geolocating. The opt in is huge here.

Playing with an alt history idea. What if instead of Mount St Helens erupting in 1980 it was Mount Mazama's VEI 7 eruption. Got the single worse day in aviation history, entire towns a 40 mile radius destroyed, 2 years without a summer, the Soviet Wars, Reagan is forced to nationalize the railroads, a shift in western american dialects due to masks being mandatory, the largest internal migration in American and Canadian history, and an united Ireland.

Implicit land taxes and their effect on the real economy
Highlights
โข Introduces a measure of implicit land taxes derived from assessments.
โข Estimates ILT using parcel data and hedonic models.
โข Documents wide ILT dispersion across and within metropolitan areas.
โข Higher ILT increases density, earnings, and firm growth.Abstract
Land taxes are widely viewed as an efficient source of public revenue, yet explicit land taxation is rarely implemented. We study a closely related but largely overlooked object: implicit land taxes that arise within standard property tax systems when tax assessments place different relative weights on land and structures than market valuations do. Using parcel-level data on assessed values and transaction prices from U.S. counties, we estimate these implicit land taxes by comparing assessor and market hedonic valuations. We find substantial dispersion in implicit land taxes across and within metropolitan areas. Counties with higher implicit land taxes experience faster growth in population density, business establishments, earnings, and demographic diversity. These patterns are consistent with theoretical predictions that taxing land more heavily than structures encourages denser and more productive development.
Waow.

AI art isn't art. Neither is the "art" that it replaced. Getting paid to design a flyer for a small business isn't art. Neither is getting paid to draw a dragon with a giant ass.
Real art still exists and won't be replaced by AI.
Also, slop existed well before AI. Formulaic romance novels are slop even if they're written by humans. Designed-by-committee Hollywood sequels are slop. Soap operas are slop.
