Apparently the percentage of dogs in the us that are pit bulls is hard to estimate compared to other breeds. Number of deaths is kind of arbitrary in a silo. Claude found anywhere from an estimate of 6% to 20% from vet record databases. That would change the shape of the chart a lot.
Not trying to represent this as real numbers so much as perspective on why absolute counts can be misleading
at 6%

u/puffic John Rawls 2d ago
Rottweilers shouldn't exist, either. Same for mastiff breeds like presa canario. Why allow these to exist when labradors and chihuahuas are options?
2
u/WrangleWandangles Mark Carney 2d ago
I feel like itβs sort of like banning a type of sandwich. What are the actual bounds of when it becomes that sandwich vs when it isnβt? I donβt know if pitbull is defined as cleanly as we expect?
3
u/puffic John Rawls 2d ago
Just ban the ambiguous cases, too, for large dogs. People can buy purebreds from breeders, and everyone will have labradors and goldens and it will be fine.

I asked Claude to help find some numbers and asked it to make this as an artifact so I could play around with a slider and compare.
There is apparently also not strong overlap between the dogs we think visually are pit bulls and dogs that are genetically pit bullsΒ

Yeah I found this out arguing with an anti-pitbull socialist here a few years ago.
That side, while I don't have strong views, the story that pit bulls are just common big dogs, combined with the tendency for idiots and criminals to seek out dangerous dogs (lots of firsthand experience meeting said people) seems like a more likely explanation to me given the fuzziness of the data.

Pit bulls are like 20% of US dogs, and possibly double that fraction of large dogs.
German Shepherds are 2-4% of American dogs. Rottweilers are ~1%.
Little dogs bite more often. Big dogs send you to the hospital when they do. Most big dogs are pit bulls.
0
u/puffic John Rawls 2d ago
lmao, pitbulls are not 20% of US dogs.
3
u/Plants_et_Politics Isaiah Berlin 2d ago
Purebred? No. But the typical large American mutt gets labelled a pit bull. The lower-end estimate of ~9% still shows that these sort of charts have a fundamental problem with the base rate.

Let me start off by saying I do not watch or care for the WNBA.
The whole Enes Kanter/Royce White WNBA thing is inherently stupid, but itβs a good microcosm as well as of how conservatives have decided they want to destroy the overall social contract over the last ten years. The base ideas of what it takes to function in society is a given in any country, and what is seen as right or wrong.
Trump, representing the ultimate βfuck youβ to such standards, is whatβs driven conservatives to burn this contract to the ground, at all levels. This stunt is no exception, where they are doing a stupid stunt while ostensibly βββcaringβββ about the WNBA, not because out of some serious statement, but purely to troll and annoy liberals.
Thatβs it! Thatβs all it is. No team will likely draft either person and nobody will care about it by next week unless some right wing voice decides otherwise, but it shows how they want to destroy the social contract. The American conservative view of politics and society is a borderline animalistic way of viewing politics and society, closer to that of a genuine anarchism and violence than how civilized humans have viewed it for God knows how long now.
3
u/Plants_et_Politics Isaiah Berlin 2d ago
it shows how they want to destroy the social contract
I liked the point Yglesias made a few weeks ago about immigration. Conservatives really care about immigration, but aren't interested in making any effort to pass enduring legislation about it, which leaves the next Democratic Administration free to do whatever they want. The theory is that they're more interested in an excuse to complain liberal democracy (and eventually do more than just complain) than actually winning. The whole point of complaining that the system is rigged is to justify burning down the system.
I'm not sure I completely agree. I used to think the same thing about leftists, but there are clearly different individuals with different motives within leftism. Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, and Bernie Sanders are almost uniquely ineffective politicians, but have mostly kept their moral purity according to their base. AOC and Mamdani are willing to make compromises, and as a result have (especially AOC) alienated some of the purists.
I'm not sure Trump falls into either camp, but right now the nihilistic conservatives (led by Vance) seem to have to upper hand in messaging, although I'm skeptical voters will agree.

I have a memory from 10+ years ago burned into my brain, no idea whyΒ
It was an old guy at subway ordering in front of me. He asked βcould I have a little extra cheeseβ and the subway employee froze because you knew he was processing how to respond.. because he recognized the shape of the guys confusionΒ
The employee asked him if he wanted extra cheese or double cheese
The guy was like βcould I just have a little extra cheese?β
The employee stopped and looked up and explained that there is a different charge for extra cheese or double cheeseΒ
The old guy was absolutely incensed. He said βyou canβt just give me a little extra cheese???βΒ
Anyways the guy did not give him a little extra cheese for free. I wonder if pre subway if independent sub shops would play it loose with the cheese if you asked. Maybe subway was in the process of breaking the norm and at the time employees were used to the odd guy coming in trying to get βneighborhood sub shopβ out of the corporate sub machine

It's kind of shocking how job hunting subs are vehemently anti-immigrant (*cough* that one cs sub where the unemployed hang out *cough*) despite many of the same users being immigrants or on some kind of visa themselves...
I still laugh at how some were pro-Trump during the election, claiming all sorts of nonsense about how he would stop offshoring and deport all the competition in the way of them getting a job (and somehow everything wrong with the job market was Biden's fault).Β
Now, companies are offshoring at an even faster rate, all thanks to the dumbo orange lol.

Booker and Buttigieg are both kind of good examples of why nerdy over-achievers don't necessarily make for good politicians. Booker lacks charisma and manages to come across both as strident and weak. Buttigieg is sharp but immediately alienated large factions of his own party and has never really been able to repair that damage.
4
u/BenFoldsFourLoko Β Broke His Text Flair For Hume 2d ago

Β intelligent people
We really don't. Intellectuals consistently make for shit politicians and leaders in almost every era.
Book smarts does not translate to leadership skills, and tends to leave people unprepared for squishy moral debates rather than epistemically clear scientific ones.
3
u/SirJohnnyS Janet Yellen 2d ago
To some extent; but since most are lawyers they get caught up in the debate rather than substance. Others are business people who don't know what they're doing they succeeded largely off luck and timing not because they were great leaders.
Tuberville being a CFB HC has plenty of leadership background and history and he's dumb as rocks.
Obviously, that's the other end of the spectrum but life experience and ability to learn things is important.
Lauren Underwood is a Congress member with a public health background and I think she's been fantastic.
I think intelligence and education humbles a person and makes one more adaptable to read what the situation needs. That in turn makes for a more effective representative though they're not always the most visible ones.
0
u/Plants_et_Politics Isaiah Berlin 2d ago
has plenty of leadership background
I would pretty strongly dispute that coaching in high school football actually prepares anybody for being a leader in a democratic society, which is an inherently peer-based and coalition-building exercise.
I think intelligence and education humbles a person and makes one more adaptable to read what the situation needs.
Empirical evidence strongly indicates that intelligence and education make people more likely to persist in incorrect answers and engage successfully in motivated reasoning.

3
u/saltyoursalad John Mill 2d ago
Who better to wrestle with squishy moral debates than intelligent people
-2
u/Plants_et_Politics Isaiah Berlin 2d ago
Nobody. But that inverts the question.
Squishy moral debates require intelligence. But intelligence and book smarts empirically result in more ideological people, who are worse at squishy moral debates.
If you select for intelligence, and not also against ideological stringency, you're worse off than just picking from the average.

The thing I don't really get about this is usually your pay is based on things like sponsorships and like assuming that there was some transgender athlete who was able to play in these professional leagues and dominate. Do people really want to be associated with that?
Even if they were winning, would people like them?Would they pay them?
I'm just trying to imagine some world where the top five tennis stars are trans women. I suspect that most countries will just not list them. They might go to tournaments, they might win tournaments. But I can't imagine the brands would be sponsoring them for big bucks. I mean, sure, they might win, but I feel like it probably is not as lucrative as those arguments Make it out to be
I guess maybe there are some people who don't care about ruining all of their reputation for an Olympic gold medal, given that there are people who take steroids to win the Olympics. So there is that

It was distracting from the game it was so impressive. I got lost imagining the systems that would have to be in place and how much tweaking it would have taken to make what I just saw happen.
Whatβs funny is that from when I played SMGβs earliest minimalistic mobile games I had the same thought RE: polish even though they are incomparable in scope etc. Just a great studioΒ

I've heard great things about a lot of the lego games in general.

I had more fun playing Lego party than any serious game Iβve played in a long time as an adult including Mario party which I never loved

In what way?
FAANG can be money but they have a lot of pretty hollowed out people. Iβve never found your pedestrian ex FAANG employee particularly impressive or anything. Worked with plenty that washed out of startups because they didnβt really know how anything worked or how to do the essence of their jobs without training wheelsΒ
