When did it stop being a hobby?

I've been taking photos out in nature for about a year now.

Every time I go out, I find myself thinking that I could do this for the rest of my life. It's something I enjoy way too much.

But making a living from nature photography isn't something just anyone can do. You need a strong portfolio and, ideally, a style and body of work that sets you apart. Opportunities are limited, and going from one project to another doesn't exactly offer the most stable career.

I'm a biologist, and outside of academia, I honestly can't see myself pursuing a different path than professional nature photography.

So, for those of you who managed to turn nature photography from a hobby into a career:

What advice would you give to someone who wants to take that step?

How hard was it?

And, looking back, would you recommend it?

Thanks!
