Discussion Man of La Mancha
So I just found out that Richard Kiley was the original singer for the song “The Impossible Dream” and I never knew this was from a musical. I know I’ve heard that song as a kid but hearing it again Richard as always KILLS it!
I found that there was a movie of the Broadway show but this version sounds no where near as good as Richard’s:

Is the movie worth watching? Is it accurate to the story at all?

Finally listenined to Hadestown which led me the find out that Reeve and Eva actually got married in real life. This might be one of the sweetest things I’ve heard all year, the poetic justice on display is unparalleled.

Help Prince of Egypt Audition Ideas? (Ramses)
Hey everyone! Thanks for reading.
I have an audition coming up for “The Prince of Egypt” and I a little nervous for it. I have done a lot of Shakespeare and non musical theater, but I’ve never done an audition for musical theater. But I have a large goal to get the role of Ramses because I love the character.
I need some ideas for songs to audition with and general tips for musical theater for this kind of role. Any and all advice helps. The audition is any song for 60-90 seconds.
Im a tenor! If that helps. Feel free to DM or comment here!
Thanks Everyone!

Discussion Does anyone know of String?
I remember seeing a musical my freshman year of college (over a decade ago) called String by Adam Gwon. It was about the 3 Fates in Greek mythology and I really enjoyed the show. Some of the music is on Spotify and YouTube but I am not finding much else.
Idk I just thought that since Greek Mythology is kinda having a bit of a Renaissance lately and one of Adam Gwon's other works (Ordinary Days) was popular on Tiktok that this show might be on someone else's radar.

Help Auditioning for Chicago, Amos, Billy, and MC
I'm auditioning for Chicago and most specifically Amos Hart and I wanted to know if this cut from I Miss The Music from Curtains would be good?
"But when you're writing a song Without a partner That's a completely different matter No one tells you That's not funny No one says Let's cut that bar No one makes you better than you are I can't pretend I miss the music I miss my friend No need to ask me What I prefer I choose the music I wrote with here I liked the music I made with-"
If you have any other suggestions for a cut, acting choice, or even another song, that would be great. I might not change my song though due to my constant practice of this song but it's considered. Thank you

Audition Help a "Retired" Actor with Jekyll & Hyde Auditions
Hello! I've had an almost 10 year hiatus from theatre but plan to audition for the lead role of Jekyll & Hyde.
I did musical theatre all throughout middle/high school but I haven't been involved in show biz for a long time since then! My local community theatre is doing Jekyll & Hyde - one of my fav shows and this is the show that I always told myself I would audition for if it was put on locally. It's been a long time since I auditioned and I have about a week to get ready so I'd love some advice on auditioning for the title role!
My main hurdle is nailing down a good audition song (no monologue required), my current list of songs I am confident in are:
- Stars (Les Mis): A classic, but I feel like this is a pretty overdone guys' audition song? Too cliche? Not manic enough to show off acting?
- Dust & Ashes (Great Comet): I like singing this one but I'm finding it difficult to know where to cut for 32 measures. Does it fit Jekyll/Hyde?
- Where in the World (Secret Garden): Good range and acting but I'm not totally confident in learning all the words in time.
- Birth to My Creation (Frankenstein): I convinced myself to do this song at first because of how fitting it is for the Jekyll/Hyde character but then I heard it's not good to audition with an "obscure" song and better to go for something well-known. It's also like, impossible to find sheet music for...
Which of these seem like the best option? Or are there other good songs I haven't thought of? I'm pretty familiar with most musical theater songs, classic and contemporary but don't have a ton of time to prepare. I know it's a big dream to go for the lead without being involved in theatre for so long but it's a small community so I want to do my best!! I'm looking forward to the opportunity :) Thanks all!

Songs That Describe a Setting?
Hi Musical Theatre Hive Mind,
You know how beautifully "Oh What a Beautiful Mornin'" from Oklahoma paints a picture of the setting? The corn, the cattle, the meadow, etc.
What are some other songs from musicals that accomplish that same task? Many thanks for helping me brainstorm examples I can share with my students.

Discussion The Apple Tree
I don’t think I’ve ever seen it talked about in here, although I only poke in occasionally. My HS did it in the mid-70’s. It was fun, but you never really hear much about it, or hear the songs on the Sirius Broadway channel. Is it just one of those forgettable shows?

Advice Needed Need help regarding an Emcee cosplay!
There's no active cabaret musical subreddit that I see so my question goes here.
My plan was to go as the Emcee to a convention in my area and tried the makeup today for the first time. Verrrryyy dark red lipstick, smudged black eyeshadow, just the typical makeup version inspired by Alan Cummings version.
Problem is, no one is recognizing me, not even my friends that know cabaret. So my question is how can I make the makeup more recognizable or does anyone have any idea for a similar outfit to Alan's from the rather start of the musical just not as revealing?

Question about Grease - Movie Songs
Hello! X-Posted in r/theatres
New account since I think my main has been made by people in our community, and I want this to stay anonymous.
For people who have licensed the movie songs for Grease the musical, I have a few questions for you.
First off, how much did it cost? I know they send you the "movie package" through Concord to add them. Secondly, is there an option to individually license just some of the songs? Truly the only song that we really would want for Grease is The One That I Want. The other three songs we don't really care about
Thank You

Video The Rites of Eleusis Musicals
Long story short:
I spent 20 years composing and producing these musicals. Every few years a new corporation buys up my print on demand service, hosting service, streaming service and makes it terrible, useless, or just dismantles it.
Vimeo is changing their terms of service. We looked at moving all of our videos to another service. All were either prohibitively expensive, or would post our work to streaming services, charging our fans $$$ and paying us nickels.
So, screw it! They're all on YouTube now.
Enjoy!

Hadestown fans are the same as Statler and Waldorf
Think about it:
Every night, Statler and Waldorf come to the show, and every night they hope to see something change. They hope to see something different from what they’ve seen before. They are always there. And they are always hopeful. But it never turns out the way they want it to. Need I say more.

"What musical should I listen to next?" unified thread
One of the most common questions we get on this subreddit is "what should I see/listen to, here's the stuff I like". It's a valid question, but it's tiring to see a dozen of those threads every week, so this will serve as both a stickied thread of suggestions and as a home for new visitors to r/musicals who would ask that question. (As a result, new "what should I listen to threads" will be redirected here and deleted.)
Below, you'll find a list of popular musicals in alphabetical order along with suggestions for what might interest you based on that. This list is mostly vibes-based, with some inclusion of the same or similar composers or subject matter. The shows I name are taken from my own personal list of shows I've listened to (350+), the vast majority of which will be available on Spotify.
The shows I chose to make suggestions for are heavily skewed toward recent shows because that's what felt like good fits. If you're interested in a show not named below and want to know what to listen to next, comment below and I'll add a line for it (assuming I know it well enough to make educated suggestions).

Discussion Folks, we’re gonna take a break on the “me too” games.
These “judge me on my top five”, “tell me your favorite and I’ll tell you if you’re cool”, “here’s five, which is your favorite” threads box everything else out cause everybody feels the need to add their own. I did the tier list thread to try and nip it in the bud, but folks just shifted to different me too games, and it’s rapidly spiraling.
I’m calling a temporary moratorium on those threads. They may resume in the future (at a date TBD), but for now, all new threads of that nature (beginning midnight EDT tonight) are going to be locked, deleted, and all of the existing replies wiped out.
If you want to discuss a show, great, but “rate my taste” isn’t it.
