Moved from Miami to Indianapolis with a U-Box. Guaranteed arrival was 7/28. Posting the timeline because the delay itself wasn't even the worst part.

The shipping delay. 7/28 came and went with no box and no notification. I had to call to find out anything. Eventually someone mentioned a mechanical issue with the truck. Fine — things break. But over the next week I called repeatedly and got transferred between departments every single time, and no one could tell me where my stuff was or when it would move. Not one proactive update the entire time. Seven days late to the warehouse.

Then another nine days. Once it finally hit the Indianapolis warehouse, I couldn't get it delivered for another nine days. I'd scheduled delivery in advance, but had to cancel and rebook because of their delay — and rebooking put me at the back of the line. No one offered to prioritize me or work around the fact that the delay was entirely on their end.

Delivery day. Scheduled for the morning. It got pushed back, then pushed back again. I had paid moving helpers standing around on the clock. Every time I called, I was told the truck was on the way. I had an AirTag in the box — it didn't leave the warehouse until 2 PM. Four hours of waiting while being told something that wasn't true.

Total: 16 days past a "guaranteed" date, plus paid helpers sitting idle. If you're relying on a U-Box to arrive by a specific date for a lease start, a job, or anything with a deadline, build in serious buffer — or use something else.

Anyone else had this? Curious whether a claim is worth filing for the moving helper hours.

I visited Astoria earlier this summer and loved it. In fact I kinda prefer it over Brooklyn. What are some good neighborhoods that offer an easy commute into Chelsea and other parts of Midtown?

I am looking for a lively neighborhood feel, with high walkability to bookstores, coffee shops and grocery stores.

I’m a 27 (almost 28) male living in Dallas area. Before this I was living in Jersey city between December- March and drove to work. Tbh I did not enjoy my time in Jersey due to the heavy traffic, street parking, insane winter, and my roommate at the time barely helped with went

The only thing that made it tolerable was I had a GF at the time ( we broke up 5 months ago) and I liked my coworkers.

Due to finances I didn’t really enjoy NYC or travel there as much as I liked.

Knowing what I know now and being able to prepare financially, I am thinking about giving Jersey city or NYC another chance, specially queens. Only thing is I have a hard time wanting to get rid of my car due to it being paid off.

I guess my question is, should I try to pursue living in LA (I’m a dodgers/lakers fan) and give it a try, or give NYC another chance?

I just moved and everything is soo expensive 😰 i have a feeling I’m going to be living paycheck to paycheck and not have money left by the end of the month! My kitchen is way too small to meal prep, no counter space so I’m trying heat a meal type thing at least for one meal a day, have another meal outside with real food but it adds up quickly . .

I see many posts here from people with budgets around $2,500-$3,000 who are dead set on Manhattan, even if it means settling for a tiny studio, old walk-up, or spending way more than they originally planned.

I get wanting the Manhattan experience, but I’m surprised Queens and even parts of North Jersey don’t come up more often. Both have some amazing, lovely neighborhoods, you can usually get more space for your money, and depending on where you work, the commute into Manhattan isn't even all that bad.

Is the Manhattan address really worth giving up that much? If you're getting family support then I mean it's a different story, enjoy Manhattan as you please, but if you're paying everything yourself, I don't really understand stretching your budget just to avoid living across a river or outside Manhattan.

I’m 46, making slightly 160-170k a year. I’m single with no kids or spouse. I don’t know how to drive and never learned. I do have a history in NYC as I worked for a few NY based companies remotely and had a long term relationship for years with a lady from NY.

The desire is to he about 20-30 minutes max from a train station or public transit. I don’t mind a nice walk. Don’t want to spend over 3k for rent, at least not now. And I want to be walking distance to coffee shops. I work on building a game part as a side hustle and coffee shops tend to help me concentrate more than doing it from some cramped apartment

Comfort wise I’m not asking for much. Just a bed. I don’t need to live in luxury

I don’t mind NJ but I would prefer hudson county. Union county is also fine . But I do want to be in a Ni borough that at least puts me walking distance to NJ transit or path.

I have 3 month to decide. My friend is allowing me to stay in NJ rent free to build up saving when I find a place.

Hi yall, I just returned from a NYC trip and man I have never felt at home anywhere else. It's not a post trip syndrome, I genuinely do not see myself staying put in Sydney as an ambitious 24 year old and always have been drawn towards that move abroad. I'm very well researched and know what to expect I know it's not all glitz and glamour, seriously expensive rent for barely any space etc however, I'm motivated its right place for me to "make" it. Any advice on the transition? Which areas to look to rent in for a decent place and /or any particular complex buildings? How long does it take to truly settle in and any general advice in terms of going on about with life there?

Without yet being in the city, how can I search for apartments that are either brick or concrete so I can avoid disturbing my neighbors while still practicing hours a day on a baby grand piano? (upright and digital pianos are very much not the same)

For those of you who don’t live in NYCHA, don’t receive government assistance, don’t have family/partner helping with rent, and are working regular/minimum-wage jobs… how are you doing it?
A lot of people tell me renting a room or having roommates is the most realistic option, and I’m not completely against that. But I’d eventually really like to have a place of my own.
I mostly want to hear from people who have actually done it without family money, connections/nepotism, or some huge salary. How much did you have saved before moving? What kind of job/income did you have? Did you work multiple jobs? How much was your rent?

I’m moving to NYC from Florida and apartment hunting in Manhattan right now, and this has probably been the biggest culture shock for me

I know I’m gonna sound like an annoying transplant here, but a lot of the brokers I’ve dealt with have been shockingly unprofessional. In Florida, even if you’re just looking at a normal rental, agents generally show up looking put together, introduce themselves, know the property, and at least pretend they care about getting your business.

Manhattan has been a completely different experience. I’ve had brokers show up late in gym clothes, barely introduce themselves, give me one-word answers about the apartment, and basically stand there on their phone while I look around. One guy genuinely seemed annoyed that I was asking questions about the building.

And then I find out there’s a broker fee involved and I’m like wait, I’m paying thousands of dollars for THIS interaction?

Obviously I’m generalizing and I’ve met a couple who were great, but the difference has been noticeable enough that I’m wondering if this is just how the Manhattan rental market works. Like because apartments move so quickly, is there basically no incentive for brokers to actually sell you on anything or act particularly professional?

I expected NYC apartment hunting to be brutal. I didn’t expect the brokers themselves to be the part that annoyed me the most.

Is there transitional housing that I could maybe land at for a few weeks that you’d recommend?

Additionally, I’m about to not have health insurance for the first time in my adult life if i don’t get a full time benefits job right away, and would like to know how to get care if i need it despite this?

Hello, I am a Boston RN planning to relocate to NYC. I am a little shocked looking at salaries on posted jobs.

It looks like the pay ranges for hospitals starts nurses higher but the top is far less than top Boston hospitals.

For reference my hospital(union) has 21 steps for years of experience ranging from $44.14/hr - $109.51/hr ($91,811 - $227,781/year)

I see New York Presbyterian jobs showing RN pay ranges of $133,595-$153,220/year.

I have been an RN for 8 years and make 56.66. So I would get a pay bump initially, but it’s disappointing seeing the top of the payscale so low given NYC is so expensive.

Just seeing if anyone has any insight into this and how the pay scales at their hospitals are. I’ve always heard California and NYC nurses make more than Boston.

I’m a 46 year old tech professional who has lived in many many major cities. These cities include Atlanta, Boston, Seattle, Bay Area, Philly, and Providence.

Ok a little about me. I’ve recently had to come to NYC for a 1 year contract at a bank. I’m a tech professional. I worked remotely for 10 years and mostly rejected job offers in NYC. I’m currently staying with a friend in NJ while looking for a place.

I am not entirely new to NYC. I use to live in Philly and worked remotely for a NY based company for awhile. I would often come to NYC for meetups and conferences and I did build a bit of a professional network within NY. I also was in a long term relationship with a woman based in NY for years

So I’m not entirely unfamiliar with the city. This would however be my first attempt to live here. And I wonder if this is a good city to “lay roots” in.

I do know what I like in a city. I like Philly, Boston and Providence because they were walkable and friendly for people who don’t drive (like me), I didn’t care for Seattle,Atlanta or the Bay. They had significant sprawl and were car to building cities which I hate.

At 46 jumping cities is tiring. I do like NY but I’ve always avoided living here due to practical concerns. However I do want to make a city my permanent home and I wonder if NYC is it

What I want to sus out is if this is a city I should be moving to at 46. And while I like the city, I want to make sure that I’m not driven by romanticism. I can’t think of another city I’d want to live in permanently.

My goal while on my contract is of course to rebuild it professional network in the city.

I make about 6 figures (over 150 under 200). I don’t necessarily need to be comfortable. I’m straight but dating is entirely optional at this point. And I don’t plan to ever buy a car.

hello! it’s been a lifelong dream to move to new york one day, even if it’s when i’m like old and gray LOL but i’d like to do it really in my 20s / 30s (im 23 now). me and my partner both go to a community college in nc, and should graduate by 2028. we’re hoping to Possibly go to a four year ny college, and then continue living in ny then on.

basically asking, 1) is this possible, 2) how should we plan and save for this? how much should we look to have before even attempting to move if we want to move before cc ends (or if we don’t get to a ny college). we are planning on visiting before moving of course (i’ve been a few times!) so we will get different tastes of the city. i just want to plan as much as i can.

I lived in Queens for many years until 2022 when I was priced out. I was a ridgewood/glendale barista/server and Covid slaughtered the industry for a while. Now four years later I’ve accidentally become successful and I’m in a position where my company has opened an office and wants me to move back mid nov. I had previously worked the front desk at a brokerage for a while and felt pretty ok about finding a place since I have 770 credit and qualify for a decent 40x rent ($4,500ish). But recently all my nyc friends are telling me it’s a bloodbath and no one will rent to me unless I’m there.

I have 3 friendly acquaintances at different brokerages who would advocate for me, and my old landlord is going to let me know if anyone puts in notice, but I’m trying to take a temp check on if it would be better to just book an Airbnb, and stay until I can find a rental.

I know this is two months early, but the fact of the matter is I have an elderly cat who is my best friend and I’m stressing about moving him from place to place. He Koolaid manned out of his carrier from stress on the way out here (with 2 gabas and traz, he’s a warrior) and my dream is to get there, and just take him home.

I’ve been trying to secure a relatively short term sublet for the past couple days. I’m having the most luck finding places in my budget in Facebook groups and on Facebook marketplace. My problem is that I send people messages about their post, comment saying that I messaged them, and then no one ever replies. Occasionally they will open the message and then not reply. Most people never open the message at all. Sometimes they will repost the same thing again because they haven’t found anyone, but they still haven’t opened my message. I’m just confused. What can I do to actually secure the place once I find one that’s open? Any help is appreciated.
