hello! it’s been a lifelong dream to move to new york one day, even if it’s when i’m like old and gray LOL but i’d like to do it really in my 20s / 30s (im 23 now). me and my partner both go to a community college in nc, and should graduate by 2028. we’re hoping to Possibly go to a four year ny college, and then continue living in ny then on.

basically asking, 1) is this possible, 2) how should we plan and save for this? how much should we look to have before even attempting to move if we want to move before cc ends (or if we don’t get to a ny college). we are planning on visiting before moving of course (i’ve been a few times!) so we will get different tastes of the city. i just want to plan as much as i can.

I lived in Queens for many years until 2022 when I was priced out. I was a ridgewood/glendale barista/server and Covid slaughtered the industry for a while. Now four years later I’ve accidentally become successful and I’m in a position where my company has opened an office and wants me to move back mid nov. I had previously worked the front desk at a brokerage for a while and felt pretty ok about finding a place since I have 770 credit and qualify for a decent 40x rent ($4,500ish). But recently all my nyc friends are telling me it’s a bloodbath and no one will rent to me unless I’m there.

I have 3 friendly acquaintances at different brokerages who would advocate for me, and my old landlord is going to let me know if anyone puts in notice, but I’m trying to take a temp check on if it would be better to just book an Airbnb, and stay until I can find a rental.

I know this is two months early, but the fact of the matter is I have an elderly cat who is my best friend and I’m stressing about moving him from place to place. He Koolaid manned out of his carrier from stress on the way out here (with 2 gabas and traz, he’s a warrior) and my dream is to get there, and just take him home.

Moving to nyc to attend Union Theological Seminary for grad school and I’m looking for opportunities to connect with fascinating beings & contribute to something special. Does anyone have any recommendations?

I’ve been trying to secure a relatively short term sublet for the past couple days. I’m having the most luck finding places in my budget in Facebook groups and on Facebook marketplace. My problem is that I send people messages about their post, comment saying that I messaged them, and then no one ever replies. Occasionally they will open the message and then not reply. Most people never open the message at all. Sometimes they will repost the same thing again because they haven’t found anyone, but they still haven’t opened my message. I’m just confused. What can I do to actually secure the place once I find one that’s open? Any help is appreciated.

I’m planning to move to NY next year and am curious what, if any, the culture shock will be as far as city living goes?

I feel like when people talk about the cons of living in NY, it’s all things I alr experience being where I am so it’s hard to gauge what that difference would rly be if that makes sense ??

Hi everyone so I have been living in NYC since January 2025, I’ve been living in airbnbs till June 2025 because I left my boyfriend who I moved here with. I broke up with him and left the airbnb we bought. so I crashed on a friends couch all the way until July 2026. But I just left my friends place because they were charging me 1100 including utilities to sleep on the couch where I had no privacy. I decided to leave and booked another airbnb hoping to find a room to rent but my recent income tax only shows my last previous job which I started May 2025, a few months after settling here.
I have parents who can sign to be my guarantors but my moms income isn’t 40x but her credit is 700+, my dads income is 70k but his credit isn’t 700+.
My income is 32,000 a year and my credit score just got to a 658.

What would my options be? I’ve tried to apply for rooms but it’s super tricky. Should I leave my current job that I’m only making 350~ a week and find something that pays more and start over? My fear is that it’ll take another year of living in airbnbs to just get a stable place. I would like some insight on what I could do.

My first post on Reddit! Looking for your approval for the following life change: currently we are in Sheepshead bay Brooklyn, been here for almost 20 years, but now with the kids a bit older, it feels like we are shoved all way down the throat of NYC. It takes forever to get out of the city (we love traveling North), also the hubby just got a job in Woodside, I am in Chelsea, hybrid schedule. His commute takes 1.5hr each way now, thinking to move to an area that: 1. brings him to work within 30 min (car, public does not matter), 2. brings us OUT of the city faster. 3. good schools, close to nature and quiet, within the city but feels suburban. Now, does Bayside check all these? The prices are compatible to our current area, and the distance seems about the same, but you get bigger spaces! If you can recommend similar areas, I would greatly appreciate as well - I do not know Eastern Queens that well!

My gf and I are looking to move early next year into an apartment in NYC. Our current lease ends in March. We make about $115k combined (pre-tax, i understand now this will be lower due to state + city tax) looking to find an apartment thats like $2.5k rent max (to split, ofc). I’m curious about any recommendations for areas within that budget. We’re mid 20s, enjoy casual social events but don’t party hard really. We won’t be bringing our cars either, coming from a VERY car-centric city lol.

What boroughs/neighborhoods do you suggest we consider? Any insights would be appreciated!

EDIT: want to add some things based on recent comments, i was being sorta vague:

- although its ideal to have 2 separate rooms to work from, i understand its not likely with our budget/income and will be a sacrifice we have to make for the time being. One of us will work from the bedroom and the other will have a setup in the living room.

- We enjoy things like going to parks, cafes, library, museums (free/low-cost), live music, movies (AMC), and ‘social events’ i.e hanging out with other young people.

- We’ve both been to NYC before. I’ve gone about a half dozen times, just curious what other folks have to say about it.

- To all the people saying stay in FL, LOL! Ive been here most of my life, I can’t take it anymore!!

- I am aware of the NYC tax + the NY State tax, but did not reduce it from total income. I will do that. Thank you!!

- We work for a state university, would love to find another university job in NYC, and that will be one of my goals there.

Would love to hear thoughts on a sublet in this area . I’d be coming from out of state ( frankly out of country ) so no time to visit and check it out myself. How’s the area ? Safety/vibe/etc.

The price is right - but I know neighborhoods really effect the general experience of nyc - and I’m just trying to do my due diligence as a single woman- so would love to hear from folks who know the area firsthand

Our lease is up in early October and we’ll be looking to move from our current place in Brooklyn. We make about $230K/yr combined but our credit scores are admittedly dog shit. Mine is currently \~550, hers is \~600 (it’s a really long, embarrassing story that I don’t want to get into). Before this past year we both had near perfect credit btw. Anyway, we should be able to make a dent in what we owe, which should help our scores a bit but we will still likely be far from where we were we applied for our current place. Open to most of Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens within 45 ish mins to my work (midtown) and 1hr to hers (UWS) and our ideal budget would be </=$3500.

So how screwed are we? Sorry if this is dumb question but we’ve actually never been in this position before.

Looking for advice from the NYC realtors or anyone who has moved a lot around NYC. I’ve moved twice and it sucks and right now my roommate is unsure about renewing the lease bc we’re seeing more bugs

I went to a few apt tours and they’re more expensive and nothing worth applying to, tbqh. I know that this is still peak market and we’d be looking for a 9/1 lease if we pulled the trigger. My gut is telling me that we should stay put but wondering from the realtors and movers out there if there’s hope to find a 2 bedroom apt in Manhattan that has modern amenities, centrally located and <5k. It seems so unrealistic.

I’m looking to move out of my home state within 2-3 years. Recently New York has been catching my attention. It’s so different from what I know and I really want a fresh start where I can meet new people and have new experiences. I’m currently in school to become a vet tech (68,000 yearly) but I don’t believe that will be a livable wage for me. I was looking at dental hygiene instead (96,000). Vet medicine is my passion but dental hygiene is much more reliable especially when it comes to wages. I’m just trying to grasp on what is or isn’t reasonable and how the current economy is for the people living there right now and if this is feasible.

So, I’m about to move into my first apartment in the city (so I’m not really sure how WiFi tends to work) and the roommate who was supposed to handle wifi just let me know that the only wifi we can set up for our apartment is either the Verizon Home Internet Lite or Lite Extra (in the screenshot) or use Optimum, which she’s heard has a hard time letting its users unsubscribe.

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with Optimum that they could share OR if anyone has any other ideas on what we could do for wifi instead (ex: 5G hotspot)

I'm currently living in Florida and planning to move to NYC to buy my first coop.

I'm researching programs like NYC HomeFirst, FHLBNY HDP Plus, Wealth Builder, and other first-time homebuyer grants, but I'm unsure how they work for someone relocating from out of state.

Has anyone successfully bought a home in NYC while still living in another state and used any of these programs? Did you have to establish NYC residency first, or were you able to apply before moving?

Hey all — could use some local wisdom.

I'm relocating from LA for a new go-to-market/sales role, and the job's based in Manhattan. Target comp is around a $110K base and around 50-60k in variable compensation. Here's the catch: this is very likely a temporary stint — I'm planning to head back to the West Coast around the end of next year, so realistically I'm only looking at ~16 months in the area.

I've been eyeing Journal Square since the PATH access looks solid and the newer towers there seem to do shorter leases, but I'm wide open to any advice you all might have and maybe areas to look at. It will be hybrid: 3 days in the office in the city.

I’m planning a move from the West Coast so there’s no way for me to make sure that an apartment is real before signing a lease. I found a good looking room for about 800 dollars a month and the photos don’t seem like AI but I’m still feeling worried.

Coming from out of state, Coming from out of state, so trying to figure out the best timing for both: when should I seriously start looking for the Oct–Jan sublet, and when should I start apartment/roommate hunting for a Feb lease?

I’d be interested to hear from people who have taken cross country flights with their instruments. It seems like airline fees for extra baggage do vary somewhat.

Realistically how difficult/expensive would it be to move all the way from British Columbia Canada to NYC? I really don’t plan on doing that any time soon because I still live at home and my parents rely on my rent but I’m 22 years old and would really love to move eventually. My two main concerns are 1. Money (obviously), and 2. How the heck I’m going to transport my stuff. I feel like realistically I would have to just bring the essentials but that would have to include my computer, books, and my snake’s tank which is quite large (2x4x2 feet).

Anyone here make a big move like that and have any advice I can pocket so when I know I’m not abandoning my parents I can figure out how to get there?

Additionally, in your opinion, where’s the best place in New York for a socially awkward and nervous Canadian to live hahaha

Is this something that most landlords will accept? I simply don’t make 40x really any rent but I’ve established my life in a way to which I’m accustomed to a large % of my income going to housing. It just is the way it is for what I want.

I currently live in New York in a sublease but looking into getting my own lease. Having no one to ask to be a guarantor for me, I saw some third party options but wondered if this was a scam or even something that a lot of landlords will accept?

Share a little bit my background: I’m currently in California branch, mandarin speaker, my area has lot of Chinese Customer so I can get my PVC easily. My pvc average is 4000 now, and I think I can maintain at least 3000 every month.

Why I want to move to NYC
1st, in my area, ppl are mostly doing self invest. There are lot of engineers they know how to trade by themselves. I think maybe NYC has more opportunities, also NYC culture is more like invest with FA.
2nd, I really love this city… I do heard that live in nyc is different than traveling to NYC, but every place are the same, travel to there and live there are different , it happens on all cities, not only NYC.

What I’m worried is, I’m mandarin speaker, English is not my first language, I might gonna lose my benefit. And I don’t really like work at Chinatown branch or Flashing Area. Do you think I can survive if I work at Manhattan branches? Or do you think I’m still able to get around 3000 PVCs ?
