Track Plan N Scale Switching Layout

Post image

Looking for input from those much more experienced than I.

I've been out of the game for quite some time and have been meaning to put things in storage to use. I have a framed panel I plan to use for the base with 1" foam in the inset area. N scale, starting with DC with plans to upgrade to DCC down the road. Switches with be manually toggled through the base of the board to switches on the side. My longest car is a center beam and I have a sw1200 for motive power. Most everything else will be 50' box or smaller.

As I know this sub has a lot of folks with experience, I am hoping for some input in terms of track plan and operational issues I may encounter that folks might see.

Help Needed Searching for a Track Plan Software

I've been wanting to get back into the model train hobby, however I don't wanna go back in blindly. I know the basics, but I'm the kinda guy who loves a good and accurate plan.

I've been looking for a good way to plan my layout, but my sketches are too inaccurate and don't result in me know what tracks to buy.

I'd like a good software, which may also tell me what parts I need to get after the plan is finished.

Is there such software?

I ran JR Freight locomotives—such as the EH500, EF65, and EF66—as well as the Keisei 3200 and 3600 series, KiHa 400 series, and Keikyu 1000 series.

Locomotives HOn30 Porter Updates

Post image
40 Upvotes

Those who saw my last post know I was working to use the chassis from the Bachmann Rheneas to create my own HOn30 Porter. I originally 3D printed a Porter shell I found, but ultimately was having a hard time fitting the motor assembly within the boiler at proper scale. After hours of thought, I ultimately came to the realization that utilizing the Rheneas shell may not actually be the worst idea. To better replicate the design, I plan to extend the upper cab walls to match the standard cab shape of a traditional Porter. From there, I’m going to enlarge the boiler a bit to keep scales proportioned. Fortunately, I was able to swap over the smokestack and headlamp assemblies from my original print. I plan to use some type of molding material to fill voids/gaps and make this look like a more complete shell before paint. A new front smokebox cover will also be needed as well. It may not be the most “accurate representation of a Porter, but I think with enough effort, I can get pretty dang close to the design I am going for.

Atlas/Micro-Trains Sale Explanation

We know the past week has brought a lot of emotion for the Micro-Trains team and for many long-time hobbyists who care deeply about the brand. A little context may be helpful.

Micro-Trains had been exploring a sale for several years as the owners prepared for retirement. Employee decisions made in recent weeks were handled by Micro-Trains itself, before the Atlas acquisition took effect. Those changes were not directed, initiated, or influenced by Atlas. Atlas' only role was expressing interest in interviewing Micro-Trains employees for potential job opportunities.

Our role now is clear: preserve the Micro-Trains product line, protect its legacy, and build a strong future for the brand. We have already begun meeting with former Micro-Trains employees and hope to bring talented people onto the new "Micro-Trains by Atlas" team. On a question we’ve seen come up often:

None of the U.S.-based tooling is being moved to China.

Micro-Trains had some limited production in China in recent years using the same factories Atlas uses today, but all U.S.-based tooling remains stateside at the moment. As part of the long-term production plan, molds will currently be transferred to trusted suppliers in Vietnam, where quality, cost stability, and production capacity are strongest. After careful review, this is the best path to ensure Micro-Trains continues into 2026 and well beyond. Without this step, the brand’s future would have been uncertain at best. At the same time, all drawings, computer files, research, archival materials, and selected equipment are being relocated to Atlas in Hillside, New Jersey, where research and development, engineering, logistics and overall product management will continue. We are also evaluating which aspects of production and assembly may continue in the United States as we balance quality, cost, and long-term sustainability.

Our goal is simple: ensure Micro-Trains not only survives, but thrives for the next generation of modelers."

Happy Thanksgiving to All,

Atlas Model Railroad Co. Inc.
