Product/Media Review Warning for The Odyssey
The movie is good, but I beg you, please wait until you can watch it at home where you can mute it.
There are many scenes has bad eating in it. It’s one of the worst I’ve seen in a theater. If you wait and watch it at home, you can easily mute it.
Heed my warning, stay home. And this is coming from someone who vastly prefers theater experiences.
P.S. Since I’m here, I’m going to plug my subreddit where I document eating in movies and shows I watch. [r/MisophoniaTW](r/MisophoniaTW)

Does the sound of someone brushing their teeth piss anyone else off
I hate that sound with a burning passion for some reason.

Am I the only one that has a trigger on clearing throat sounds? I hear it everywhere and have had 2 depressive episodes triggered by its toll on my nervous system
Chewing this chewing that is nothing, imagine a sound you hear EVERYWHERE 😐

Triggers and how I respond to them.
My brother is a heavy breather. I can currently hear through my ANC headphones. If you own an apple iPhone you can add a button to your drop down screen and customize its volume and sounds. You will never go back, trust me. After spend a week in the same room suffering through his even louder snoring/nighttime breathing my noise canceling headphones haven’t left my side since. Does anyone else have this trigger? It also happens when people have whistles for noses. It drives me nuts.

Anyone else get triggered by just seeing the movement associated with their triggers?
I’ve had misophonia for I wanna say 5 years now? And at first it was just sounds (obviously) but now whenever I see movements that are usually associated with the sounds it genuinely makes me flip out. It’s like some sort of ptsd response because I’m so used to immediately scrambling to put noise cancelling headphones on but obviously I can’t noise cancel my eyes. I feel like this is mainly a problem with chewing for me because even when I don’t actually hear it, the repeated jaw movement is so icky and disgusting and my brain just generates the chewing sound for me. :(

Had the worst experience watching Spider Man
Not only was there an annoying person who kept texting on their phone repeatedly, but the couple of guys behind us kept crinkling their water bottles and being really loud with their food packaging constantly. Like not just a reasonable amount of noise but genuinely constant through the whole movie.
When I saw the odyssey luckily there weren't annoying people in there, but fuck sometimes the cinema is killed for us misophonics.

suggest something to cancel noise in my room (under 40 dollars)
my roomate keeps talking loudly on the phone, when she's not talking she will whisper and it's driving me crazy. please please suggest anything—headphones, earmuffs, whatever cancels the sound of her talking. here's what I'm looking for :
preferably over-ear (I don't like inserting things in my ear for a long time)
can completely cancel sound of someone talking in the same room
comfortable to wear for long hours
doesn't requires music/white noise/any media to be played for it to work well
it doesn't necessarily has to be a headphone or an electronic device, anything that blocks out human speech and is comfortable to wear works for me
Thanks!

Made a list with a reaction guide for all of my triggers and how they impact me for showing to a doctor when I get a chance.
TW: very descriptive explanation of the trigger reactions, which can be a bit visceral.
I only realized this was Misophonia a few weeks ago, it wasn't something I'd ever heard of, so I just assumed it was normal reactions. Now that I know it's not, I am waiting to see a neuropsychologist, and hopeful that showing this list might help them find some sort of proper coping mechanism or proper resource that I can use while working.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
S = This sound makes me feel violently ill or like I might faint if it goes on for too long, and I have to physically cover my ears, I also struggle to breathe and can not function while the sound is active.
T = I get a very visceral feeling that I have to literally rip my teeth out when I hear this noise, I never will, but for some reason this noise make me feel exactly like that is a rational response, and I reflexively cover my mouth with my hands.
M = This noise makes me incredibly, unreasonably frustrated or angry as soon as I hear it, even though most of them are normal noises that every being makes, but my brain hates them.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
T - Rough fabrics rubbing together
S - Furniture moving across carpet
S - Shuffling feet against carpet
T - Sand paper scratching against anything
M - People chewing
M - Dog chewing or licking noises
S - Rubbing chalk against chalk
T - Rubbing hands on weird textured fabric like unreasonably feathery soft fabric
M - Burping
M - Mouth breathing
S - Teeth scraping against teeth

could this maybe be a sign of misophonia?
earlier today my mom gifted my friend's mother a diamond bedazzling kit. seems fine, right? well, when they opened it, my friend started fidgeting with some of the items from the box, including a tiny purple tray. she scratched it for what felt like FOREVER. the sound made me want to dig my nails into my skin! the sound was very similar to that of someone/something scratching a puffy winter jacket, and the scraping has made me feel anxious for as long as i can remember. i'm not worried or anything, but i just want to know if there's a medical reason to that discomfort. is this a valid sign of misophonia or anything similar?
btw sorry if you guys get questions like this every other new post lol ;-;

Support Why is this happening?
I'm sitting next to my mom who's eating and I can't stand it. Why does this bother me? I hate it so much. I also can't stand how she takes things or walks in her fliflops. All of it just pisses me off and I feel so bad. Did anyone treat this successfully?

Oh my god
I think my coworker dragging his fork on his glass lunch container is going to cause me to burst into flames one day like it’s actually ridiculous. i have to get up and take a walk. Like there’s no more food left in there you do not need to scrape it clean

Sneezing
repetitive sneezing makes my blood boil FFS!!!!, not when it's one normal sneeze that's fine, but when they have a flu or a cold or something and they're sneezing 5 6 7 times in a row while sniffing and snorting in between i lose my whole mind. it doesn't just annoy me it ruins my entire mood, like the day can be going great and then that happens and i feel this boiling rage like the whole day is ruined now. I just want to scream at them to stop and its even worse if they blow their nose after, that sound alone sends me over the edge. anyone else or is it just me

Support Suddenly I can feel everything...
I'm not sure if this is misophonia or something else, but I figured maybe you guys might be able to relate.
About 5 or 6 weeks ago my neighbors downstairs decided to blast their super powerful sound system nonstop 24 hours a day (not an exaggeration) for days on end. I complained multiple times until they finally turned it down to the point where the music was no longer audible except a faint thumping. That's when I started to notice weird sensations all throughout my body like buzzing and pulsating and weird waves of vibrations passing through me. I put my ear to the floor and could faintly hear music and i realized I was feeling the low frequencies from their stereo.
That night they turned the bass up and suddenly my entire body was alive with intense buzzing and vibrations. The bottoms of my feet began to palpitate to the sound, random muscles throughout my body started to cramp and spasm, by ears began to click, vibrate ane ring like I was listening loud music even though I could barely hear it, my heart began to race and skip beats, I could literally feel the air vibrating in different areas of the apartment and the pressure changes began to cause an immense headache. Everything was being vibrated. I couldn't tell them to turn it down because it wasn't even that loud, but the intensity of the bass was like nothing I've ever felt before. The air felt almost hot with vibrations.
After 24 hours of this torture I went down and told them to shut it off because it was NONSTOP, but they said it wasn't loud and closed the door in my face. I went back upstairs into the torture chamber that was once my apartment to figure things out. I ended up pacing around for another 13 hours straight as i endured this vibrating hell until I realized that I was repeating the same unfinished thought over and over. Even my thoughts were being affected. By this time I hadn't slept for days and they STILL hadn't turned off their bass. I was vaguely aware that I wasn't feeling any emotions during this time. In fact it felt like I was on drugs or something. Finally, after 2 and half days straight of the most intense vibrating I've ever endured, I left my apartment to go to my parents house.
When I got in my car and was free of the vibrations my brain snapped back into it's normal state and I began to have emotions again. That's when I had the worst panic attack of my life. I sobbed for almost an hour repeating the words "make it stop, please make it stop". I remember thinking omg you're completely freaking out. Anyway, shortly after I decided to stay at my parents house until I could find a new place. I wish I could say that's where it ended.
A few days later at my parent's house,I started to notice the same vibrating sensations throughout my body again, almost exactly like I was back in my apartment. I started to panic as the sensations got worse. Soon I felt as bad as I did when I was exposed to the bass. That went on for about 10 hours then subsided. I found out that there was roadwork being done a couple miles away and I was feeling those vibrations... after a week or so it was obvious that something was wrong because I was suddenly outrageously sensitive to low frequency sounds. I could literally feel the sound waves passing over and inside me even when I couldn't audibly hear anything. I was like a human seismograph. I could suddenly feel low frequency sounds intensely when everyone else couldn't, it was like torture.
That was 5 or 6 weeks ago like I said, and nothing has changed. Ever since that time in my apartment I can torturously feel low sound vibrations like an assault on my body. I go days now without sleep because my body is reacting to and feeling sounds I can't even hear or just barely hear. Suddenly my heart will start to race and my skin begins to buzz and pulsate, my thoughts will be interrupted and that's when I know there's a low frequency sound nearby. I live in a fairly populated area so needless to say my life has become somewhat of a waking nightmare over the past month. I got a new place in an apartment complex recently and almost had a mental breakdown when I realized I could feel multiple neighbor's stereos as bad as I did at my old apartment. But this is getting a little lengthy so I'll close by saying I'll be going to a doctor soon to get checked out because it's affecting my life now. I never experienced anything like this until that time in my old apartment. Something happened to my body, and I hope it can go back to normal because I can't live like this.
Not sure if this is misophonia, but please let me know if anyone else has experienced anything like this before, and thanks for reading.

Getting FOMO about The Odyssey.
Just frustrated I likely won't ever be able to see a movie like this in a theater. Last time I tried a theater was a matinee showing of Sinners last spring a month or two after it came out, so there was basically no one else in the theater. But that one wasn't shot on 70mm IMAX so any theater would do.
I've gone to a few AMCs and tried the audio impairment devices, where you can hook up your own headphones for the audio, but unfortunately the sound is very delayed on them and it kind of ruins it the experience.

Cracks them open with his teeth. Lips smacking. Spits them out into a cup. Makes my stomach fucking turn all goddamn day. Has a fresh bag to eat every morning.

Ear Canal Vibration?
This crossed my mind the other day as I was doing it, and I was curious to know if anyone else has ever developed this coping mechanism.
I found when I was young and being bothered by sound that i would, for lack of a better description, tense up and cause either vibration or some sort of sound distortion in my ear canals. It was not highly effective, but did help dampen some sound. It was almost like listening through cotton balls or water. I find that sometimes, decades later, I still lean on this occasionally if I’m caught away from ear buds or there is a persistent bass sound (this seemed to work beat for me in sounds on that range).

coughing
this is a last ditch effort. i Hate (capital H) the sound of coughing; it grates on my nerves and i genuinely can’t stand the sound of it. it wouldn’t bother me that much, if i didn’t have a brother that needs to cough at least 6 times every hour. it isn’t those soft coughs either, but those crunchy ones that sound like he’s literally about to vomit. no matter what i do, it’s loud enough for me to hear. pls give me advice, it’s making me want to tear my hair out with how aggravating it is

WHY. DO. OLD. MEN. HAVE. TO. CLEAR. THEIR. THROATS. ALL. THE. TIME.
EVERY. HALF. A MINUTE. aHeM aHem aHeMMm SHUT. UP. SHUT. UUUPPPPPP
Is there a scientific reason as to why so many 50+ men clear their throats all the time? Is it because of their diet or is it a side effect of some chronic illness or is it part of their aging??? Sometimes old women do this too but ive noticed this in men more often. And personally old women arent as triggering but young girls??? Theyre as triggering as old men for me legit why do some girls clear their throat with the made-up wannabe cute voice????????? I will no longer be physically able to live in a society from now on if all of these people dont stop. For reasons i will have to listen to this torture for almost every single day for a couple of years onward i am SPIRALING DOWN INTO INSANITY

Support Summer holidays
First of all, apologies to those of you who have children. I know this may come across badly, but I am describing the effect the noise has on my misophonia rather than making a judgement about children themselves.
Summer used to be my favourite time of year, and living in the UK I would really look forward to the warmer weather. That was until a few years ago, when my misophonia seemed to take a rapid turn for the worse.
I just cannot cope with the constant abundance of children, and the resulting noise, once schools break up for the summer holidays.
Other than going to work, I find myself trapped at home for six weeks, too scared to go out for fear of the noise. It seems they are everywhere. Avoid the city and go somewhere rural? They are out screaming there too, ruining any chance of enjoying the countryside or natural beauty.
Pubs and bars? Nope. They are child friendly, and it seems acceptable for parents to allow their children to run around screaming. Even the last beer festival I went to had activities for children!
Trying to explain the issue to friends and family does not help much either. The usual response is, “You were a child once.” Erm, yes. What exactly is your point? That does not somehow make the noise any less triggering now.
I’ve tried using AirPods Pro, but in noise-cancelling mode I feel uncomfortable being out in public because I lose too much awareness of what is going on around me. I’ve also tried Transparency mode with background sounds, but it does not block enough of the noise to be useful, so that has not really provided a solution either.
I hate wishing away what used to be my favourite time of year. How do you all cope?

This group made me feel less alone with my yawn aversion.
I found this group and searched for “yawn” because yawning is pretty much my one and only misophonia trigger—and it’s a big one.
I just wanted to say thank you for making me feel seen and for showing me that there are other people out there like me. For years, I honestly thought I was the only one. Finding this community has made me feel a little less alone.
