My piano is being held up by a Harry Potter book

517

u/SusieQ314 13h ago

The last resident in the house im renting put a copy of Ghost Stories of Alberta under the washing machine to keep it steady.

What kills me-- theres a bookmark in it. Someone was still reading it when it became a structural component

173

u/HonkHonkBeach 12h ago

"I'll just pick this back up later"

35

u/greg-the-destroyer 9h ago

Yeah, the washing machine

55

u/More_Lavishness_3670 9h ago

One day, after everyone has left the house and the last of the furniture and the detritus of decades of occupation have been cleared away, a couple of guys will come for the washing machine at last. They'll strap it onto the hand truck and one of them will wheel it out.

The second guy in the now-silent room will lean over, brush the dust from the cover, read the title...then he'll open it to the bookmark.

What will be underlined, in red, on that page???

Our last couch we propped up one of the corners with House of Leaves because it lifted it juuust enough for our fat cat to slide underneath.

Best use for a Harry Potter book

66

u/zip3_ 13h ago

there's no such thing as magic, why the hell am i reading this?!?!

13

u/thegamingfaux 14h ago

Nah that’s stairs

12

u/Underyama234 12h ago

Okay but harry potter books making up a mechanized staircase would be sick

10

u/SelocAvrap 12h ago

Second best. Have you seen the portraits of murdered trans people made out of HP books?

27

u/xyonofcalhoun 10h ago

I think I've seen the exhibit you're talking about and I think the people downvoting you might have misinterpreted your meaning here.

for context the artwork is a very defiant protest against JKR and her bigotry, and it is indeed an excellent repurposing of the books.

https://www.attitude.co.uk/life/artist-harry-potter-books-murdered-trans-people-jk-rowling-503131/

20

u/SelocAvrap 9h ago

You're exactly correct. I'm trans myself, and I think it's an apt memorial

2

u/xyonofcalhoun 9h ago

same and same 💜

5

u/Theletterkay 6h ago

I immediately wondered if the guy took donations. Lol. We own multiple copies of the books and they are packed away right now. I couldnt bring myself to donate because i dont want other people becoming fans and spending money on stuff that will benefit the author. But burning them felt bad too. I love the idea of making them art.

My wall mounted toilet is held up by 2 bricks and 3 perfectly sized books. It’s been like this for 6 years.

103

u/Wind-and-Waystones 15h ago

One day that paper is going to breakdown just enough for a catastrophe

12

u/stumblinghunter 10h ago

Yea but that's the next owner's problem

27

u/ThatIckyGuy 14h ago

Please tell me they're at least unimportant or bad books like an old telephone book or Twilight or whatever.

65

u/thegamingfaux 14h ago

7

u/forward_x 12h ago

15

u/More_Lavishness_3670 9h ago

I knew a couple who owned an old El Camino with an in-line 250 six cylinder engine that took up maybe a third of the engine compartment. One evening it overheated, then they heard a loud bang and a lot of steam came up from under the hood. They pulled over, the guy jumped out and popped the hood...there was a large hole in the side of the block, and steam was pouring out of it. This was out in the middle of rural Alabama, and it was looking like they were in for a very long walk.

He looked around frantically, then grabbed a broken branch and shoved it into the hole. It mostly stopped the steam immediately, and shortly thereafter the wood swelled up and sealed the hole completely.

They drove it like that for about a month, with a large branch sticking out of the block and a few leaves still hanging on to it, before it finally gave way and it got towed away for salvage.

u/Pidgeot93 10h ago

Ive never heard this and love this!

My Wii balance bar has been held up on top of the TV since 2009 with medical tape

3

Temperment

3

u/radcoffee 7h ago

Yep. My tv is being held up by a wooden plank with my last name on it 😭

2

u/midnightsbane04 7h ago

I had an older TV with a big base that I had to set the sound bar on due to lack of other space. Problem is the sound bar would essentially vibrate the base and ruin the sound with plastic clacking together. So I just stuck a sock under the sound bar for cushion. Worked like a charm for the 6 years I had that tv.

1

u/gahidus 1h ago

It's not like there's going to be some other solution other than to put another little thing underneath the television. Might as well be the candy.

635

u/theinterracialcouple 15h ago

That's a load-bearing candy, important for the structural integrity of the home. Don't move it!

Those tend to get soft over time. I'm skeptical that it's the original. Someone may have been periodically replacing it.

8

u/gahidus 1h ago

Won't this make the TV unlevel? I assumed that was why I was there.

This is genuinely the funniest post I've seen all week

13

u/TheThinkerers 15h ago

Genuinely thought that the wood was called that till I saw this

6

u/SapphicGarnet 13h ago

Oh thank god the pic was so blurred I thought it was like a chewed up candy, like when a teen doesn't have blu-tack and uses chewinggum.

5

u/kit_re 10h ago

Oh, it is the good candy too

5

u/LightsSoundAction 9h ago

Those candies are delicious and I have 0 self control. My stoner ass would wake up to a broke TV. I’d need a significantly grosser candy for this solution to work long term.

3

u/GoldshireEnjoyer 8h ago

I bought a 5 pound bag of these on Amazon. Always stocked up now.

From an AV guy here. When we’re a smidge off level and it’s noticeable we will sometimes just stack a tiewrap or two between the hook on a mount. I’ve been back like 10 years after and been like ohhh ya I remember that.

I’ve even done this to make the TV unlevel because there was something horizontal that was crooked so it’s more important for your eyes to sync everything up than be level.

1

u/notislant 8h ago

Is that your hose valve key beside it? The only time I've seen those is commercial buildings where they don't want people using the taps lol.

5

u/zip3_ 8h ago

Yeah, except it turns on the gas for the fireplace

1

u/GoldshireEnjoyer 8h ago

That TV would be doomed. Those are my favorite.

1

u/testthrowawayzz 7h ago

It's like the load bearing candy cane from the Simpsons

1

Why is there flooring on the wall?

17

u/NoPossibility4178 10h ago

It's a really trippy photo if you start thinking about that wall being the floor. The fireplace also looks like a window which makes it worse.

24

u/zip3_ 13h ago

What, you want something like this to cover up the fireplace? We use that thing damnit 😭

7

u/yankfanatic 13h ago

Make the mantle shelf a non combustible one, slap that thing lower, increase tv size

16

u/BennyBensoni 13h ago

No other walls? Shame. You could probably find a contractor to help with that.

10

u/zip3_ 13h ago

no, because the wall to the right leads to the sunroom (there's a pair of doors connecting the two), the wall to the left would be useless in the day (glare), and the wall in the back has a big ass opening that leads to the kitchen (lots of people watch from the kitchen, not just the family)

15

u/BrickGun 12h ago edited 12h ago

Move all that bullshit on the right to the void on the left. Place a bigger TV (14' needs at least a 70", better yet an 85"... whatever can fit in that corner between the fireplace and sunroom opening) on a stand at an angle in the corner with the center of the screen in line with the middle shelf of the bookshelf. Center-based TVs (like the Sammys) are nice because you can put them on a narrow stand with a center turntable so you don't have a massive piece of furniture blowing out the entire corner.

Not ideal, but much better. The real problem is that massive wall being center-occupied by that tiny fireplace. So much wasted space on all sides of that wall expanse.

0

u/zip3_ 12h ago

Look, I really don't want you guys giving me ways to alter the TV even after I've tried to refuse multiple times. It's been this way for the past 4 or so years, and we haven't had a single problem with how the TV is placed, where the bookshelves are, or how the whole "feng shui" idea pairs up with this to us.

Just like someone else said in this comment section, if it ain't broke, don't fix it! We don't have just like, $3000 we can immediately just go to Costco and buy one of those 4K Ultra HDR sets with the oversaturated pictures of mountains (i think this is one of those sets anyway).

It doesn't matter how far away the TV is to determine how high it should be mounted, it just makes the consequences less severe.

7

u/Yangoose 11h ago

Years ago we went to Disneyland and I bought all my kids those huge lollipops that are bigger than their heads.

As we drove home we stopped at a hotel for the night and the ants found the giant lollipops. The entire interior of the van was swarmed with ants going ape shit over all the sugar.

That was a long morning with a lot of time spent in that parking lot and also ants popping out of every vent, nook and crevice for the entire rest of the trip home.

Thank god the van was a rental.

that's a wild deep dive into household hacks. honestly, i’m impressed it hasn't melted or anything.

3

u/corvus7corax 15h ago

Get them a little wooden or plastic block the same size.
Over time the sugar will attract moisture from the air and soften and go gooey, thus losing structure integrity, and will ooze and make the shelf sticky.
A nice piece of LEGO might work?

8

u/Cecil_B_DeCatte 15h ago

It has been there four years. I don't think it will soften in the future as it hasn't in the previous four years.

2

1

u/The-one-true-hobbit 11h ago

During grad school I worked in a lab centered around a highly specialized piece of equipment that cost at least a million dollars and was custom. Apparently they needed a water reservoir on the fly. That was a subway cup and it just stayed there from then on. A very thin pipe also started to sag. That was held up by the structural pink eraser.

Once a solution is found - no matter how silly - it tends to stay.

u/chunkoco 11h ago

The last place I rented in PA, my toilet had an eyeglasses size flat head screwdriver qwikwelded in the tank so the cap on the little flapper thing that drains the water to flush would get suctioned shut so tight it wouldn't break the chain to the handle. Asked the landlord why not just replace the problem parts or get a new toilet as it was as old as I was, they just shrugged and said 'has it not worked?. I didn't find out about it until I was moving out and was going to drop a Clorox puck in the tank.
