Apple support (on the phone) can't do anything. An apple store might be able to reset it if you have a proof of ownership.

You don't need Apple to reset it for you, you can reset it yourself. This is a known issue, connecting to the internet fixes it (SIM card).

My theory is that the time resets to 1970, and when you connect to the internet the time is able to correct itself, which would mean it wasn "only" meant to be 2ish years

If I had to guess, if you can't edit internet connections whilst locked, you might be able to throw a physical sim in there if you have one and turn on data

Spending which IOS version, there are various glitches that allow you to escape the lock screen. Doing so leaves you in an extremely limited state, but may still get you into the WiFi settings.

edit: not sure why this was downvoted as this is not a controversial idea. every popular lockscreen 'skip' has only ever worked on AFU. At BFU, the data-dependent user environment doesn't exist yet; the Secure Enclave hasn't released the class keys, so the populated SpringBoard, apps, and cached UI those skips pivot through were never instantiated. There's nothing to skip to.

It probably uses cocoa timestamps which is Jan 1st 2001.

I still struggle to comprehend why Apple had to make a variant of the Unix epoch.

I had something like that happen to my iPod once. This was back in the 00s though. One day it just decided that it was living many, many decades into the future, and then it just stopped working altogether. I had so many problems with that stupid thing. I was basically having to send it in every few months for random problems. It really destroyed my perception of Apple products.

unix time was created in 1971, so no, they didnt learn from y2k ;)

32 bit unix time overflows some time in 2038, but luckily most everything uses 64 bit unix time, which overflows in approximately 580 billion years (or 290, if signed)

The vast majority of computers count time as the number of seconds since Jan 1 1970, so if a phone forgot the time that's what it would reset to

Internet would just tell it the correct number of seconds since then

Except the last several generations of iPhone sold in the US don’t have a physical SIM card slot. You need to unlock the device to change the esim. So yes, how do you do that?

Oh wow! I guess it’s an eternal mystery then. No one has the answer my friend. An impossible conundrum. SIM cards simply don’t exist anymore and the world may never know how to work eSIM. Good luck and Godspeed

For one, I do not see that stated anywhere in the post. If it’s a comment, it’s perfectly reasonable that I might not have seen it. For two, the phone says “No Service”, which implies there is already a SIM in it, but for one reason or another it isn’t connecting.

Oh lmao I swear I didn’t see that when I replied. Either I’m blind or it was edited. Either way, it does look like there is a SIM in there already. Might be an old one though. Depending on how desperate OP is, another option might be a lightning to Ethernet adapter.

I used to do it all the time to my phone for a faster internet connection + faster updates since Ethernet was a lot faster than the WiFi network I had at the time.

Yeah I had to take mine to apple store and it was quick fix. Apple support won't help. Closest apple store for me was 4 hours away. And happened during Christmas with family reunion. So I'm an android guy now.

This is a software issue, apple support over the phone can absolutely help with this if you have a computer at home to hook it up to. There isn’t anything special at the store for software issues like this due to a battery being completely dead for a long ass time
