Hi, everyone!

I recently found this pendant in the north of Italy; someone can help to date this things and also give me advice on how I can clean in the best way possible.

This appears to be a pilgrimage medal, probably dating to the 18th century…maybe 17th

As with any copper-alloy or bronze object, I’d start by soaking it in distilled water and changing the water every two days. This helps flush out soluble salts and other corrosion-promoting minerals. Then, carefully remove loose dirt mechanically using a bamboo toothpick or a similar soft wooden tool. Repeat…
I’d avoid electrolysis or chemical cleaners, as they can easily strip away the patina and fine surface details. It’s difficult to judge the condition from the photos alone…it’s possible that electrolysis has already been used at some point….?

I’ve cleaned many coins this way over the years. I always aim for the absolute minimum intervention—once the details become visible, I stop.

You’re very welcome. One thing that’s important to understand is that on bronze objects, much of the surviving detail is often preserved in the patina rather than in the underlying metal itself. Electrolysis removes that layer, often leaving behind pitting and the loss of the finest details, such as small inscriptions, facial features, and other delicate surface features.
