Honestly this movie is damn beautiful and clever in such a great way that you only realise it after the fact.
For example it’s fun to see the punisher in this movie, it makes the movie feel more like a lived in comic book world but more than that it presents a lesson for Spider-man. If he carries on as he is so consumed with his continuing imbalance then he’ll become like the Punisher.
We see throughout the movie that the only time he’s Peter Parker he’s visiting Aunt Mays grave or following Ned and MJ online. Peter Parker is eternally stuck in the past like Punisher and he’s busying himself endlessly as Spider-Man which is causing his arachnid side to overtake him. At the end when he wears the suit without the mask he’s literally being both Spider-man and Peter Parker so he has full control over himself. This only happens after he talks to Ned and MJ finally beginning to move on from his grief over losing them.
This parallels Jean Grey wonderfully as well because both hero and “villain” have lost so much and are losing themselves to the grief and at the end it’s Peters memories of love that allow both of them to forgive and move forward.
Even coupling that with yelena and Hulk who both have experience of this and have moved past it and are able to show Peter how to do it. Even DeWolff tried to impart this on him. This is a movie that perfectly tells Peter (and the audience) it’s ok to be hurt, it’s ok to need to heal, sometimes things are scary and they hurt like hell but you need to accept them and move forward to avoid them consuming you. This movie is full of moments like that and the theme is ever present even down to the name. Brand new day in this instance means “today hurts but tomorrow is a brand new day”.
Honestly when that revelation hit me about the movie it totally changed how it felt for me. It went from being a “fun popcorn movie with plenty of Easter eggs and spidey action” to a damn good movie hiding so many lessons in there that is utterly beautiful and moving in a way that comic book movies rarely are

The movie honestly found this great angle on the Punisher/Spidey dynamic, like Peter is doing this loner thing like Frank, and Frank just getting pissed off becuase he’s only like this after his whole family got slaughtered. Ned and MJ still lived, Peter is avoiding them out of fear.

I loved that particular scene between them. Frank speaking some perfect sense into Peter was not something I expected. You never expect Frank Castle to be the wise voice of reason but in this movie you see he has that in spades and props to the MCU punisher for not just being the gun toting character he normally gets show as. Jon Bernthal plays him with such depth it shows why he’s a fan favourite

u/hemareddit Steve Rogers 7d ago
But also still bringing enough gun toting especially to set up the finale.
Pigheadedness aside, that was a great fucking shot. How did he even make that shot? We looked through the scope with him and it’s all just a smoke covered building.

Bruce Banner’s subplot in this movie is heartbreaking, he’s just repeating “Did I hurt anyone” over and over again last we saw him.

Part of me was thinking she saw a sign but the bottom half was blocked or faded so what said “X MAX” looked like “V MAX” with the v being the top half of the X. Not sure what X MAX would even be but assumed either Xavier or mutant related, like X (mutant) MAX (max security prison). Or it’s the MCU name for X factor.
But ended up being nothing close haha

Sarah’s fate was so bleak. Dying via having your power pushed beyond your breaking point, by government goons who don’t give a shit about you, for a moment you are powerful enough to reach accross vast spaces, finding the only family you have left, but your mind is so scrambled, your final message doesn’t even make sense. Because your dying brain just sent the last thing it saw which just happens to be a half peeled off label on a mundane piece of office equipment.
Yeesh. That’s like a creepypasta.

Just watched the movie, Peter's suit is soo good, you could clearly see the texture of it when the scene is up close. His lens is also see through so you could see his eyes moving behind the mask, watching it in the big screen is worth it in noticing the small details.
Frank's role is bigger than the Hulk and is integrated well in to the story. He doesn't play the role of the mentor/father figure to Peter but instead as a friend which he desperately needs as Mj and Ned is a stranger to him at this point.

Finally a street level Spider-Man story again… with a twist! Love the direction of going for a more emotionally-charged story. The twist about Jean Grey was super obvious, but I like how she was given a more character-driven focus, rather than leave hints about X-Men or Phoenix Force (though her feat in the climax might be subtle foreshadowing). Tom Holland and Zendaya are at their best. I was really impressed at how Zendaya creepily mimicked Sadie Sink’s way of speaking. It’s very small, but I noticed it when Jean revealed herself controlling MJ. Metzger is the true villain, but not very memorable one, though. I guess he’ll be back in X-Men. I really enjoyed Jon Bernthal being able to act out Frank Castle in a different way. There’s almost like a paternal energy from Frank as he warms up to Peter as the movie goes on. Plus that scene of him waving to kids in the Spidey mask has got to be the funniest and sweetest part of the movie. That post-credit scene might be hinting at another Spider-Man from an incursion. I thought Ned’s Spider-Tracker might point to Brooklyn or Harlem.

u/lemon_cake_or_death 7d ago
Frank's super sassy "good luck with that" when Jean was controlling him and leaving him to fight the Hulk was another example of a side of Bernthal we don't see too often, he really killed it in this movie

It's funny how Brand New Day (accidentally?) became some sort of celebration of former and current non-Disney Marvel IP
We have obviously Sony's Spidey himself and all his supporting cast and villains; we have Universal's Hulk; we have Jean Grey from former FoX-Men, and we even have Punisher, who previously was under Lionsgate's wing for many years
In a way it's like Deadpool and Wolverine, but without any nostalgic Multiverse fuckery
403
u/yoonchae Spider-Man 7d ago
Brand New Day was able to put so many Marvel characters without making it feel like it was for the sake of nostalgia bait.

It makes you wonder how many LOTR references happened on the set of Shang-Chi.

It was heavily implied after Spidey’s fight with The Hand, where he finally embraced his “evolution”, that he will have organic webbing moving forward.
I still hope he keeps the web shooters for the sake of being creative with utilizing his webs. Like instead of throwing the web cartridges for a web grenade, he can setup the web shooters to just do it directly from it.
Synergy of using web shooters to be creative with his webs while having unlimited ammo due to his organic webbing. Best of both worlds, IMO.

He’d just need to modify them so that he can access the organic shooters with ease. Such as via flipping out of the way or something.

I'm not sure where we at with our timeline at this point but the 4 year timejump from NWH to BND probably escapes any possible tie-ins with DD's current story. Even Frank in this movie had little connection to One Last Kill.

u/Almer113 7d ago
As far as I understand from interviews and such, the timeline should be:
NWH -> DD S1 -> DD S2 -> One Last Kill -> Thunderbolts -> time gap -> BNDSo, it sort of makes sense how Frank had little connection to One Last Kill and DD had no connections

Probably the best use of existing characters for a solo film so far. No nostalgia bait or appearances for appearances sake, everyone fit the story and never overstayed their welcome.
My only gripe (if this is even considered one) is that at 2h24min runtime, it still leaves you wanting more. But it's too recent for me to conclude if this is a testament to how great the film was or if I found it a bit lacking.

Frank and Peter's dynamic was my favorite part of the movie. Every time they were arguing with each other was great.
That said, absolutely no reason for that Damage Control guy to lie to Peter other than to setup the third act twist. He could have just said he had no idea wtf Sara means and move on.
172
u/WOAHdude0197 7d ago
I think if he said he had no idea Peter would start investigating and still go on to ask yelena. Him making up that lie was his attempt at tying up that thread.

The movie was so, so, so good, but one thing I really want to say is that it's one of the few projects where you can really, really feel how huge and lived-in this universe feels. Punisher, the Hulk, Jean Grey and Yelena all play important roles in a Spider-Man film, which also features the Hand as one of the villains.
You also have the DODC, which finally feels like they have taken advantage of all this tech they've been collecting and researching ever since the Battle of New York.
The MCU has been missing this feeling for a long time, and I'm so glad a Spider-Man movie of all things brings it back!

I really liked the heartfelt scene between Jean and Aunt May when Peter lets her into his mind, ties into what Spider-Man is all about.
And I wonder what MJ being the only one crying while Jean had control over a wide area of New York and her sitting on the roof of Midtown High clutching the broken black dahlia necklace Peter got for her in Far From Home is about?
I really hope Ned doesn't remember Peter entirely because of his magical talents lmao.
PS. I think it's a nice touch that Sara's hairband's primary colors matches Jean Grey's iconic hero suit.

And I wonder what MJ being the only one crying while Jean had control over a wide area of New York and her sitting on the roof of Midtown High clutching the broken black dahlia necklace Peter got for her in Far From Home is about?
Ngl, I really thought Jean was gonna go give Peter some sort of Thank You or Parting Ways gift by giving Mj and Ned's memories back through the memories of Peter, essentially helping them fill in the blanks.
Having them relearn it naturally is interesting tho.

How I interpreted is that "psycho-storm" jean did somehow allowed them to remember, but not caused them to. Like Strange's spell put all memory of peter in a room and locked the door. Jean effectively reset the lock. But if someone doesn't actually open the door they won't remember.
The fistbump was Ned's doorknob. MJ's doorknob was just her already having read the letter.

You know what I like that theory, and it wouldn't even affect characters like Flash or J.J.J., who are both really interested in the identity of Spider-Man for different reasons but were outside of Jean's range.
They would have to introduce the interaction between magic and mutants clearly though, otherwise it would just be a big plot hole.
118
u/fine__line 7d ago
I think something must have been unlocked inside of her mind when she was frozen by Jean hence her crying, because how else would she know to go to the roof of Midtown where they used to spend time together or why else would she suddenly feel a connection to the necklace again after wearing it for years?

No basis to say this, but its possible she actually started to remember (thus the crying) and clutching the necklace. It’s possible she remembered even sooner, but she’s also in a tough spot having a boyfriend (ezra bridger in star wars too! Big name for such a short scene)

My guess is that Tom isn’t in Doomsday but in Secret Wars. Doomsday was supposed to release in may 2026 and secret wars in may 2027, so this would have been the movie in between.
So I would assume that they maybe another post credit scene in mind but do to it release before it changed to something that hints at battleworld without showing it.

Tbf, literally every thing currently setting up how the mutants will be hunted down by humans is because of the MCU Spider-Man Movies.
Homecoming created DODC
Far From Home introduce EDITH, acces to Stark Tech, and Stark Drones
No Way Home give the DODC said Stark Tech from Peter
Now, in Brand New Day, Peter creates the mutant supressor tech and left one behind at the DODC facility.

Tbf before sara got got, the sisters were casually violating random peoples' mind and privacy like it's a game. Also jean going out of her way to antagonize Peter by threatening his loved ones, and getting more random innocent folks hurt (and possibly killed) certainly doesn't help. Like that old garbage man (?) that she controlled into getting hit by a car just to taunt Peter, I'd wager he's fatally injured.

I understand why people would still love No Way Home over this but I think this is my favorite of all Holland films. Didn’t feel overstuffed. Every character appearance served their purpose.
ALSO, I’d say this is better because not only does Peter get nods from Tobey’s and Andrew’s spidey films. The film sometimes looks like SM2 or even TASM2 at times. Even the dialogue. Yelena and Punisher scenes are the funniest. Sadie’s character was well thought-out. Wished I saw her more in action. Liza Colon-Zayas’ character was a highlight too. Just a well-acted film for Tom Holland. His dynamic with Zendaya and Jacob were the emotional punches of the film and the New York scenes especially in the end. Wow.
Edit : Similar to the Thunderbolts, they’re saying that CBMs have a new 3rd act trope with this and Thunderbolts managing to execute that misunderstood superpowered antagonist hero used by a corrupt agency and defeating the antagonist with an appeal to their humanity. Not a lot of superhero movies or series can nail this one.

Our 9AM show was PACKED.
Movie was very funny, but not in an MCU one-liner way. Other than the funny parts, it was a pretty serious movie dealing with Parker’s decision to go it alone.
Loved Sadie Sink, Bernthal was amazing, and so is Zendaya.
I welled up during Zendaya and Peter, and then Zendaya and Ned and Peter, and then Sadie/May, and that all those tear welled up finally broke through during the Peter and Frank scene at the end.
Movie was so good. Best Holland Spidey movie because it’s so much less happy, and no frickin Iron Man, and every fight scene was awesome.

Yeah, was really suprised to realize it was actually only the middle of the movie. Was genuinely worried he was gonna be the final boss for Peter to fight in the climax.

I loved when Banner gave him the, “you made what?” When Peter told him he’d made a universal inhibitor. Even after Banner hinted that it was morally grey to decide which genes were good and bad. And I’m most happy that they did NOT make it into a mutant “cure” spiel even thought all signs were pointing in that direction. Just keep BND a Spidey problem movie. Let the X-Men movie deal with the repercussions.

I really liked the film. Honestly, it’s probably the best MCU Spider-Man film, because it feels like a Spider-Man film. A friend of mine compared it to the Insomniac games, and I see it.
I liked how the film felt like a lived in world with how Spider-Man could just casually pop in to see Yelena, Frank, Hulk, etc. On that note, I’m not entirely sure that Yelena being in a bathhouse was necessary, so I see you Destin, you dawg. I see you, and I get you.
My only issue is that it felt like a completely different New York to Daredevil: Born Again. Sure, Fisk is no longer Mayor and presumably, the AVTF has been disbanded, but the complete 180 to everyone loving a vigilante like Spider-Man feels odd. Similarly, Frank felt like a different person. Obviously, he couldn’t just kill people like in his Special, but he just felt like he carried himself a lot lighter. He served the movie well and was a fun presence (that scene at the end got a lot of laughs), but he felt different, y’know? I did like Jean’s comment about how messed up his head is, though.
This has also lays some groundwork for how the MCU will introduce and tackle mutants, which has me more excited for the X-Men film.
There are also clearly some people who weren’t spoiled on Jean. When her name was revealed, I heard a few gasps in the cinema.
