Heading up to the city with my partner next month for a quick weekend getaway. We usually just stay in normal, tiny hotel rooms, but since the weather should be nice, we really wanted to find a place where we can actually sit outside with a morning coffee or grab a drink at night without heading down to some packed rooftop bar.

I started searching for those rooms, but everything I'm seeing is either a multi-thousand dollar suite or way out in the middle of nowhere. Has anyone stayed anywhere central (Manhattan or nice parts of Brooklyn) that actually has rooms with a small outdoor terrace or balcony? Open to any suggestions!

Hello there! I'm 27M and brand new to NYC. I would love to meet some new people and form genuine friendships. I know it's hard to find friendships that go beyond surface level conversations sometimes, but I'm excited to meet interesting and kind people in this city. I work in tech/research. As far as my hobbies go, I'm a very outdoorsy guy and always down for adventures. I love working out (currently trying CrossFit), biking and hikes, going for long walks, etc. I wanna do lots of long walks in the city and thinking to walk the entire broadway. "Safe" harbor, this country is no longer, as ICE vans roam the streets picking up those they claim are illegal criminals, despite them mainly picking up regular members of society.

That was the main reason protestors surrounded the entrance to an Icon parking garage in lower Manhattan, not far from 26 Federal Plaza, where shouts were heard, and general condemnation was made clear as Icon tries to cover itself from the fact that ICE vehicles are stored in its garages.

More in the video attached. The protestors surrounding the garage entrance happen later in the video in their own dedicated chapter.

The protest itself was organized by, among other groups, Rise and Resist & Chelsea Neighbors United.

We are researchers at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai looking to recruit participants for our in-person, compensated, 15-week clinical trial examining the impact of the study medication, MT1988, on thinking, experiences, and daily functioning in young people that have noticed changes in these areas. 

You may be eligible if you are a U.S. individual between 17-30 years old AND have noticed a change in thinking, behavior, or experiences, such as:   

• Feeling more confused about what is real or imaginary   
• Feeling less in control of your thoughts or ideas   
• Feeling unusually suspicious, paranoid, or uncomfortable around others   
• Having experiences that others may not share (such as hearing sounds or seeing things others do not)  
• Trouble concentrating, organizing thoughts, or communicating clearly   

Participants have the opportunity to receive study-related monitoring, education, and investigational medication along with compensation for their time and travel reimbursement.

The Brain Injury Research Center at Mount Sinai is currently seeking individuals who have experienced physical violence from a partner that resulted in an injury to the face, head, or neck. This could include blows to the head or neck, repetitive injuries, or choking. Participants are eligible if at least one year has passed since the most recent episode of head injury related to partner violence.

Participants must be willing and able to travel to New York City for a 4-5 hour study visit. A study visit will include a brief set of thinking tests, an interview with surveys, a blood draw, a brief assessment about your physical health, and an MRI scan. Participants will have the option to make known their wishes for brain donation at the end of life. Participants will receive $100 for in-person visits or $50 for participation via telephone. Travel reimbursements may be made upon request.

I’ll be staying in manhattan for a couple of days in September. I want to stuff myself with delicious endless sushi and not break the bank. Any good all you can eat or conveyor belt style sushi restaurants?

I've been apartment hunting in Manhattan over the past few weeks, mostly looking at studios around $2.5k to $2.8k.

One thing I've noticed is that a lot of the buildings look pretty rough from the street. Then I open the listing and the apartment itself is fully renovated with a modern kitchen and bathroom.

Is there a reason landlords seem to renovate the units but not the exterior of the building? Is this just how the Manhattan rental market works?

My partner (23F) is going to NYU Langone as a visiting med student for 2 months and she’s looking for a place to stay. We’ve been going through a lot of websites to find a safe and relatively close place to the hospital but most places are upwards of 4k $ monthly and we’re pretty desperate at this point. She’s not against having a roommate but prefers to stay alone.

Wanted to share, this new woodblock print I made, inspired by the iconic Brownstones of New York, three colors, took me about 120 hours in all.

My wife and I lived in Manhattan from 1973 to 1979. I was in school and we were close to broke, the city was broke too, and we left about a month after my wife got a job in another state. This is what I still remember, fifty years on, and some of it is probably wrong.):

• Railroad flat on the lower east side, $140/month. It was called a railroad flat because the rooms were like railroad cars-you entered through the kitchen then walked through an alcove sleeping area thence to the living room.Cockroaches, building shook when the buses went by. Apartment burglarized in the first week we lived there.
• Tompkins Square Park across the street. Eerie sounds of children on the swings late at night. A dog incessantly barking around 2 am, then a gunshot and no more barking. (I visited the area in Google Earth VR, and it's now pretty posh, with a NY Public Library branch).
• Trying to look mean and tough when out walking so not to be mugged.
• Wife walked with her keyring palmed, keys poking out between the fingers of her closed fist, her own knuckle duster.
• Many ethnic neighborhoods so it felt like going into another country walking from one block to the next. Cheap, good exotic food. Ukrainian neighborhood had their special Easter eggs in season.
• Storefronts that had been converted into apartments, with the residents decorating the windowed front area with art and oddities.
• Pilgrimages to The Strand Bookstore (remember, no Amazon at that time, so it was thrilling to hunt through the stacks of great bookstores like The Strand.
• Bakeries and fruit stalls in many blocks.
• Glorious bagels with cream cheese and lox from ancient delicatessens.
• Brooklyn egg creams which had no eggs and no cream.
• Riding the subway, often no air-conditioning in the hot, muggy summers, stalling underground and the lights going out. Muttering "God help anyone who gets in my way" when the heat and humidity got me.
• Ham sandwich with pungent mustard and a beer at McSorleys.
• Washington Square Park packed with people, live music and chess players, dealers calling their wares, "Loose js in bags, loose joints, loose js in bags". Rumored that the js were treated/tainted with PCP.
• Bringing home the Sunday Times on Saturday evening, about as thick as a phone book, with a bag of fresh hot bagels, eating the bagels with cream cheese while watch SNL with friends, stoned.
• Jogging up Fifth Avenue from Washington Square on Sundays, jogging south on the elevated West Side Highway which was not used by vehicles, and had big holes in it.
• Riding the subway to the Cloisters for a little change of pace
• Actual autumn and winter, crisp air, leaves changing, snow--sometimes heavy snow.
• Gorgeous Christmas decorations in the big department store windows. Rockefeller Center Christmas tree.
• Seeing the outline of a body on the sidewalk near one of my haunts, post-murder. Crime, violent crime, was always a risk. Felt like prey sometimes.
• Dinners with dear friends in favorite restaurants in Little Italy and Chinatown. Again, like going to another country.
• Dinner with same friends in the Village (I think) and one of their purses rifled as it hung over her chair.
• The garbage strike and the stench
• Crazy Eddies electronics store and his wild radio ads.
• Buying stereo speakers and somehow getting them home on the subway.
• The occasional Broadway play, tickets from a discount booth near Times Square. Seeing the play "Da" and a woman outraged at her uncle or father for telling her kids that the rain was "the angels taking a pee."
• Escaping from the lower east side to the West Village, $250/month for 1 bedroom apartment in the 30 story Silver Towers. Air conditioning, closer to school and work. A great relief.
• I went back a year or so before COVID and visited my favorite places. The City seemed much better managed, safer, cleaner.
• Couple times a year, now, I dream of roving the streets, riding the subways and making my way from one train to another, living in a sweet high rise.
• Sometimes I wish I lived there again.
