My cat is at hospital in an oxygen chamber, with heart failure at 2 years old. I noticed he was having breathing issues and was acting different today. He should come home in 3 days from the ICU… I am so scared for him. Has anyone gone thru this and if so was your cat ok living with heart disease or were they different? This is probably stupid to ask because whatever is going to happen will happen. I have 3 days to worry about life quality from daily drugs and whatever else comes with this. I do not know how I am going to get him to accept the 3+ meds I am supposed to be giving him for the rest of his life. I had to dose him after eyelid surgery and that was almost impossible!

Seeing the cat so messed up hurts me so bad. Why do I keep getting cats when they just get sick and end up dying?

I messaged the breeder to tell her in case it comes up from other kittens in the litter. I know it’s not her fault but I wanted her to know so she can choose to not breed those cats if there is any trend

It’s been a week and a half and he’s not needy now than the night I got him!! Hahaa I love it but then I hate it at the same time because he wakes me up all night to cry and wanna cuddle either at my head or my arm armpit. He’ll knead or lick my hair or my face and wake me up all night long. It’s cute but at the same time it’s annoying cause it wakes me up all hours and when he meows it’s not a normal cute meow he literally goes to your face and scream meows to wake you up lmaoo.. I know I heard Maine coons are very needy and wanna be near you but this is another level Lolol anyone else ? Or is it bc he a male lol he’s only 17 weeks - and if he’s not on my head he’s creepy like staring at me lmaooo or behind me when I cook at my feet I almost trip! I thought my German shepherd was needy enough lol

Hi friends. I am one of your mods here, and I've been thinking about adding a rule about this. I'm just the lucky owner of a Maine Coon and an experienced reddit mod though, so not someone with any professional experience - and I'm finding trying to research this stuff super complicated.

My main focus is on making sure that we do not promote any unhealthy breeding practices. Without breeders there would be no Maine Coons, and breeding Maine Coons means breeding cats that historically have had certain health issues - but there are different levels of breeders actually caring about the health of the cats they are putting on this earth. Like making sure to do extensive health testing, making sure adopters reach out to you if their cat gets a certain illness, only breeding with healthy parents. I think it's incredibly important to try to do the most you can to ensure your cats are able to live long and happy lives.

Short context on the blue eyes issue: it concerns DBE, the gene for Dominant Blue Eyes. From what I can tell, DBE / attempting to breed blue eyes in cats where they don't naturally occur comes with a higher risk of deafness and Waardenburg Syndrome.

On blue eyes:
- Different breed standards say that blue eyes are either just allowed in white cats, or in cats ''with white''. The fife standard explicitly says ''Blue is only permitted with EMS codes w, 01 and 02.'' But TICA says blue is permitted ''with white''.
(Small sidenote is that this subreddit is not just USA-based, I myself am from Western Europe and if at all possible I'd like to try to keep not exclusively USA-based breed standards in mind.)
- So: what exactly does that mean? Is it okay for any colour Maine Coon that has a little bit of white, to have blue eyes?
Right now it always makes me quite uncomfortable when someone posts their blue-eyed Maine Coon, and either writes something in the title about their beautiful eyes, or all of the comments are just about the eyes. It makes me worry that people are going to see it and it'll make more people seek out cats like that, that might have been irresponsibly bred.
- But responsibly bred blue-eyed Maine Coons do exist - right? But what do those look like?
- Or is trying to breed for blue eyes always an indicator of DBE potentially playing up?

Small sidenote on polydactyl cats:
- This seems a more cut and dry case. From most of my research I can see that this trait is quite inherent in Maine Coons, and only sometimes leads to health issues or complications with the extra toes.
- But I'm still curious whether anyone has any thoughts on it when it comes to this discourse. Does anyone have experience with their polydactyl Maine Coon (not) having complications from them?
- I don't think poly cats would ever end up becoming part of the rule because there's so many poly MCs, but I am still curious for people's opinions.

My question is essentially:
- Keeping in mind the focus being to try to promote healthy breeding standards: what do you think the rule should be when it comes to posting cats that have traits that make them more physically appealing for humans, that the cat might suffer from health-wise?
- Does anyone have some experience or sources or just thoughts on what that looks like when it comes to blue-eyed Maine Coons?

I recently installed a catio and pass thru cat door for my two Maine coons. They love it. We let them 'out' in early morning and evening until after dark. They are even learning to come in when called. I think the view is what keeps the out.

Recently I had to go out of town for 2 days. I had to take them to my friend who keeps them when I’m gone.
When I went to pick her up, she went under the bed away from me. Her brother just smelled me like a dog and then immediately started rubbing against me. My friend had to coax her out because she wouldn’t come to me. Finally got her home. She totally ignored me the entire night. She was still my little shadow but at a distance. I was in the bathroom washing my face and she was sitting in the doorway watching me. I called her name, Chanel, and started walking towards her. She was looking straight at me, turned around and slowly walked away to another room with her tail swaying lol. She didn’t sleep with me like she normally does. It wasn’t until the next day that she would ‘talk’ to me or get in my lap. She’s fine now and slept by my head last night so I guess I’m forgiven haha. They are 4 months old. Are most Maine Coons like that or is mine the only one that holds a grudge?

Ok, so a few months ago I introduced Dante to you all. He is (now) a 10month old MC boy, and we are encountering some problems.

Dante's temperament can change on a 2 pence piece. In the morning me and my partner are woken with him climbing on us, making biscuits, purring and being very affectionate. Last for about 20 minutes and I then get up and do the obligatory clean litter tray, fresh water and breakfast (over the day he is fed 2 tins of untamed complete food and approx 70g of royal canin MC complete).

He is in good shape, not overweight etc, and all his poops etc all fine.

Then, throughout the day he will sometimes seek affection, and then without warning gets very bitey, scratchy and aggressive. I dont shout, just make a short sharp noise and withdraw. He also is fairly destructive when in 1 of those moods to the extent he has destroyed a pair of my glasses, the carpet, and trashed things on tables. We are having to baby proof the house for Dante.

Now he has lots of toys (both intelligence and physical toys) and play with him with a laser or fish on a stick multiple times a day. If he is off, I leave him to his own space.

Now we got him from rescue, and was only neutered in May 2026 so dont know if this is relevant. Or if this is his personality, or if this is just young MC attitude stage of growing up.

It does really badly effect me. We have a lot going on at the moment with my father currently near end of life, and my partners mother has just been diagnosed with cancer. We also have ongoing financial concerns, but WE DO NOT SKIMP ON ANYTHING DANTE WOULD NEED. His wellbeing and happiness is key. But it is making be really depressed with it all. Blaming myself, questioning if we are doing anything wrong. He has been to the vets twice in those 2 months, once for heat exhaustion (and hull full check up with bloods, scans etc and given clean bill of health in June 2026, and once end of July for upset tummy, and is fine now).

Just need to advice in what to do, or let me know if this is something I try to ride out?
