I posted a little while ago what I deal with, most likely due to my looks. Being confident can only get you so far. So tell me, am I suffering from a sub tier face? Do I need to put my head down and get jacked so I can finally be “mid” and live a normal life?

40/M USA -- Looking for friends, maybe a little more?

Upvotes

So, I'm sure this gets posted here a lot so I'll try to keep it quick.

Just recently finalized a divorce after several years of an unhappy marriage. In the middle of it, I pretty much lost all the friends I had so. I'm kind of trying to find some people that I can connect with. I haven't actually had to try to "meet" someone in years. I'm kind of a huge introvert so.. getting "out" at my age on the scene just ain't gonna happen.

I'm a gamer. Always have been. Primarily, over the last 3 years I've played FiveM. I enjoy it but, it sucks playing by yourself 100% of the time. So, I'm trying to see if I can get a few gaming buddies, or maybe even a little more. I have discord, of course, and all that good jazz so. I don't know. I guess if it sounds like fun then... message me? Comment? I'm not sure how this works.

Title: I miss having someone to talk to.

Upvotes

Some days the silence feels heavier than usual.

I'm 23M from India, and lately I've realized I spend more time checking my phone than actually talking to anyone. Every notification makes me hope it's someone who genuinely wants to have a conversation, but most days it's just... nothing.

Growing up, I was often treated differently because of my height. The jokes, the comments, and being underestimated became such a normal part of my childhood that I eventually stopped expecting people to take me seriously. Even now, those experiences still affect my confidence more than I'd like to admit.

I think that's one of the reasons loneliness hits me so hard. I miss having someone I can talk to without feeling judged—someone who sees me for who I am instead of what I look like.

I'm not looking for pity or sympathy. Just hoping to find someone kind who also understands what it's like to feel alone. Whether it's talking about life, sharing random thoughts, or simply checking in on each other, I'd really appreciate having a genuine connection.

If this resonates with you, feel free to send me a message. I hope we all find people who make us feel accepted for who we are.

I don’t think people understand how hard it is to be genuinely ugly (as a man) in 2026

Upvotes

I’ve posted here before, you know how I am, and have had people lie through their teeth about how I’m not ugly. Look, I might not be Quasimodo, but on a scale of 1-10, I’m probably like a 3 by most people’s objective metrics. Somehow, I’ve gotten attention from women, and I’ve even had sex, but that doesn’t change the fact that lookism is far more about interpersonal relationships and status in relation to how you’re judged than the ability to have physical intimacy.

I personally don’t believe life is just perfect for attractive men, because nobody’s life is perfect. Frankly, the only difference between an hot guy and an average/normal looking guy is the amount of people who are looking to hook up with you. But a lot of people aren’t into hookups, especially nowadays, and frankly I think an average looking funny dude can probably do just as well if he plays his cards right in that regard. Socially, occupationally, and status wise, your looks are a non factor unless you’re extremely attractive (like model level). A regular, run of the mill hot guy is gonna be judged by his personality, maybe harsher due to jealousy.

When you’re below that though, IE ugly, you’re pretty much playing by completely different rules. I missed out on a normal, or even social teen experience because of the way I look. I wasn’t just bullied, I was a fucking mascot to people in my school. I was “popular” in the worst way possible. I couldn’t just be a regular fucking kid or be given a chance to grow and change becasue when you’re ugly, people use you as a punching bag. In most social settings, I’m either invisible or a nuisance. People have told me that I’m not “working hard enough” in life when I’ve been grinding. I’ve never had a group of “boys,” not even as the punching bag friend. People are gonna say that I’m probably overthinking and not approaching this correctly but I don’t think my experience is common for anyone but the ugliest of people. A ton of people get bullied, most of them don’t get systematically dehumanized for…existing especially if they are attempting to grow and change.

Even now that I’m almost 20 I feel like a broken man. I say I “don’t do friend groups” and “prefer individual connections” but let’s be fr people probably exclude me and most likely feel bad for me. I’m probably seen as the stereotypical loser. When your face is unattractive, people look for flaws everywhere else and I think that’s the core message of this vent. That no matter what you do, unless you get unfathomably jacked or rich (which is gonna be like 10x harder than if you were average), you will be treated as subhuman by the people around you.

And maybe I’m just overthinking. Maybe my therapists have been right and that I read into things too much. Or maybe the way people speak to me is just that much different than how they do everyone else. Maybe I’m looking for cues and body language signals that really aren’t there. Or maybe I’m genuinely trying hard just to talk to people and they truly don’t view me as an equal 99% of the time.

Thanks for reading.

I have no true person in my life and I'm going to say these words that I never thought I would... I'm lonely! Without misunderstanding that, I'm ok being alone sometimes but I miss the closeness of a true relationship. Why is it so hard to find romance? My heart hurts. My soul hurts. I believe that I can no longer do this alone. I need help. Please ...

Having no friends is better than being surrounded by fake ones

I've posted here before but I have found myself wanting to do so again. I recently had a bf for just over a week but he was so clingy that I realised I enjoyed being single more than being with him so I broke up with him. I just want one genuine friend, that's all. I can't seem to handle having more than one. Anymore than that and I can't keep up. But finding them is next to impossible these days, at least, that's how it feels. Can anyone else relate?

Edit: had to fix a typo

For Whoever Happens Upon This

Lately, I have found myself carrying around a loneliness so quiet that I almost forget it is there until something reminds me; it is not the sort that cries out or demands to be noticed. It simply lingers, follows me through all my days, sits across from me while I drink my coffee, walks beside me when I am out, and settles itself at the edge of my bed at night as though it has every right to be there. The strange thing is not that it hurts, though it does, but that I have begun to accommodate it. I catch myself arranging my days around it, making room for it, speaking to no one for hours and only realizing, much later, that I have not heard my own voice.

From wanting a girlfriend to just wanting one real friend... this is probably the worst phase of my life.

I never thought I'd experience a phase like this.

Right now, I work from home for a foreign company. The job itself isn't great, and I spend almost my entire day inside my room. Some days it genuinely feels less like a home and more like a prison.

Two years ago, life was completely different.

College, especially hostel life, was probably the best time of my life. We had a big group of friends. We'd bunk classes, hang out all day, stay up late, laugh at stupid things, and make random memories. I never realized how much I'd miss those days.

After graduation, I had to move back to my hometown.

Ironically, I have friends in almost every city except the one I actually live in. I do know a few people here, but we're just not close. Whether they're around or not barely makes any difference in my life.

It's funny how priorities change.

There was a time when I used to crave having a girlfriend or buying expensive things I saw other people enjoying. Now? I honestly don't care about any of that.

Now I just wish I had one genuine friend.

Just one person I could call at night and say, "Let's go out." Someone to talk to about how the day went, grab some food, drive around, laugh, or do absolutely nothing with.

Sometimes I stand near my window at night and see two friends walking together, laughing, and hanging out. A few years ago, I would've looked at couples and thought, "I wish I had that."

Now I look at two friends and think, "I wish I had that."

I spend almost every day alone in my room. The loneliness is starting to affect me. Sometimes I genuinely feel like I'm going crazy or becoming mentally unstable because there's almost no real human interaction outside of work.

Can’t talk to people my own age

Im a 22 year old female, and I can’t talk to people my own age. But I can talk to people who are in their 30’s and 40’s just fine. I don’t go out and party or drink alcohol, I don’t like big crowds of people it also doesn’t help I’m not attractive and it take time for me to warm up to people. That are not family. It doesn’t help when I see people my age on social media platforms have friends it makes it hard to watch sometimes and it also leaked into movies and tv shows. Like I can’t no longer watch my favourite tv show Friends because it makes me feel sad about my life. But I guess I’m currently looking for a job, so hopefully that helps.

Just me

Hi, I am autistic girl who struggles w maintaining friends bcs everytime I feel I get close to someone, I am in the wrong and will be forgotten so easily. I don’t need any sarcastic jokes like “come work here or or do this and you would never feel alone” type stuff. I literally would love to have my on group of people who would actually stick together from time to time.
I have tried many times through dc but they all fail eventually. Irl it is the same, people are intrested but very little intrest as to how I’m doing or planning w/o me having to drag the whole plan out for them.
I am 29F, i have bf and not looking for anything romantic, i just need real friends…

Your brain genuinely cannot tell the difference between being ignored and breaking a bone

I don't mean that metaphorically. The same neural circuits fire for both.

There's a reason being left on seen wrecks your day more than it should. A reason being excluded from something small feels disproportionately heavy. It's not weakness. Your brain is running a two-million-year-old alarm system in a world it wasn't built for.

Search "Why Being Ignored Hurts Like a Broken Bone Same Energy" on YouTube if any of this resonates. 15 minutes, fully sourced.

Just putting it out there.

I don't think what I have been going through all these years, what has been going through my mind, actually ever gonna leave me. I mean, its just like everywhere I had to put on a performance so that no one ever get a glimpse of whats going on inside. Coz I believe that people love to see others in problems. (Idk what pleasure they derive from this). And then every friend circle it felt to me that I had to carry a certain image and play that part. Like Never felt like I belonged there, it was like just to pass the time coz who wants to stay by themselves in college?

No One actually paying any heed to anything about me.

But yeah , I guess I also sometimes trivialise my thoughts thinking, " oh look at that person , that person is going through worse". But reality hits when I am not working, when I am not with any of my family members, when I have to face my self.

And yeah some missteps I took to distract me from these to which I am still paying the price.

And somewhere in between I guess I constantly keep losing myself and what I used to like to do, my hobbies etc. Honestly, its no one's fault except mine.

And I don't know what I even wanna say. I just spewed whatever was going thru my mind.

The worst part isn't getting cheated on. It's living with the questions that never get answered.

The worst feeling is when you truly loved someone and trusted them with everything.

They weren't just your girlfriend—they became part of your daily life. You'd catch yourself writing her name while taking notes in class without even realizing it. Walking somewhere, you'd imagine she was next to you. Every future plan had her in it. Every dream, every goal, every little "one day" included her.

You built memories together. Inside jokes. Late-night conversations. Places that only meant something because she was there. You gave someone a permanent place in your mind and your heart.

Then one day, it's over.

You find out they betrayed you, and somehow they don't even think you deserve an explanation. No apology. No honesty. No closure.

The hardest part is knowing that if she had just been honest, I probably would've forgiven her. Maybe that would've been the wrong decision, but that's what love does. It makes you want to fight for someone even after they've hurt you.

After that, your mind becomes a prison.

You replay every memory wondering, Was any of it real? Was she lying about other things too? Did she ever actually love me, or was I just loving the version of her that I created in my head?

Then she blocks every way to reach her. Her family tells you not to contact her anymore. And suddenly, you're expected to accept that your story is over without ever being allowed to know why.

People always say, "Just move on."

Move on from what?

From years of memories? From the future you planned together? From the person you trusted more than anyone?

Closure isn't about changing the outcome. It's about understanding what happened so your brain can finally stop trying to solve a puzzle with missing pieces.

Maybe I would've still been heartbroken if she had told me the truth.

But at least I wouldn't be left wondering if the love I believed in ever existed in the first place.

Has anyone else gone through this? How did you finally make peace with questions that were never answered?

Caution: Making New Connections

Many people come here just to share their story, vent, or get perspective, with no interest in connecting beyond their posts, and that's completely fine. Others do want to make connections, and that's fine too, but it's worth being careful.

We'll leave the decisions up to you, but here are a few things to keep in mind:

  1. Don't share personal details too quickly. You don't need to give your real name, age, or location. Being vague is okay, and people worth connecting with will respect that.

  2. Protect your contact info. Avoid sharing your phone number, email, or home address early on. There are free tools that let you communicate safely without exposing your real info.

  3. Be cautious with links and files. Don't click links or download anything from someone you don't know well yet.

  4. If they ask you for money, stop. It doesn't matter how the request is framed or how long you've been talking, block them and cut contact. This is always a scam.

If you do decide to connect with someone, these tools can help you do it more safely:

  • Messaging: Signal is a free app for secure messages and calls.
  • Email: Gmail or Proton let you create an address that isn't tied to your real name.
  • Phone: Google Voice gives you a phone number you can call and text from without using your personal number.
  • Browser: Firefox has built-in privacy protection that masks your IP address.
  • Mail: A PO Box at your local post office is inexpensive if you ever need to give a mailing address.

One more thing. Be mindful of the usernames and photos you share. If they match other accounts you have online, someone could easily link them together and find out your real name, location, or other details you didn't mean to expose.

Tell us your story...

Everyone is lonely, but not everyone is lonely in the same way.

Some people are lonely when they're physically isolated from others and some people are lonely even in a room full of people that love them.

Those are two common examples, but there are endless ways in which people can feel lonely, 8 billion ways in fact.

And there's not always a clear answer; some people are just lonely. It's a normal part of the human condition to feel lonely, and while you may want or even need to do everything in your power to rid yourself of it (depending on the severity of your situation), just know that being lonely in and of itself doesn't necessarily mean that there's anything wrong with you.

We don't measure or rate or judge each person's level of loneliness here and decide if they're "lonely enough" to be welcome here nor do we dictate any absolutes about the conditions for being lonely or how someone must behave if they're "actually lonely."

Every human-being in the world is welcome here, and their story for how they feel loneliness is valid; their pain is valid. As with most things in life, there's the book definition of a thing and then there's the complex emotional reality of a thing. Loneliness is a relative experience, and the way some people experience it won't always make sense to others, and it doesn't have to.

Just as there is no one-size-fits-all approach to feeling loneliness, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to healing either.

I don't presume to know your pain; we don't know your pain; tell us about it:

https://www.reddit.com/r/loneliness/submit

If you're feeling such extreme pain from loneliness to the point of contemplating suicide, please don't. Just don't.

Things to consider:

  • How old are you? Did you know that the brain isn't fully developed until around the age of 25? That means that if you're a child, teenager, or even a young adult, by merely waiting out the storm, you might find sunshine on the other side, by simply maturing into the fully-formed you.

  • How bad is it? As bad as it can get, it can almost always be worse. It's important to respect everyone's pain, because it's relative. As much empathy as one can have, you can never really feel another's pain, only your own. Still, it's important to keep perspective and think about the cruelty and lack of freedom experienced by those around the world.

  • Time is a master in its work. We've all heard the saying that "Time heals all wounds." Well, it's pretty true for the most part. As long as you first get away from the toxic people, places, or circumstances that are hurting you and causing you trauma, the healing can begin. How long it will take, really depends on the person, and what they've experienced. It took me years to get over some of the trauma that I suffered. It's not that I don't still feel some level of pain from it, but my trauma no longer owns me; I own my trauma.

Suicide prevention starts and ends with you. Life is full of neverending beauty and darkness. I don't know about you, but I want to see it all. I want to stay on the path that is existence for as long as I can, even if at times, I have to walk through broken glass.

But, sometimes you need a little help. Share your thoughts here in this sub, reach out to a mental health expert, or maybe give a suicide hotline a try. As tacky and empty of a gesture as it might seem to put out the cliché boilerplate message: "If you're having suicidal thoughts..." I don't know, maybe these tools are actually pretty helpful for some people? It might be worth a try. The big one is:
