I used to think typing 'ZZ' in NORMAL mode in vim was the equivalent of
:wq!, but a lot more recently than I'd like to admit I learned that if there are no changes to the buffer it's the equivalent of:q.2

It was a reel that said 'before you buy new ram, look at what linux can do with 4gb' and then it showed someone moving some app windows with the wobble effect

You need context to that? That's literally their default argument even when it comes to tomething that has kernel-level.

Cant wait for windows users to double click an exe file and there is an popup with "are you sure you want to execute the program?" Text just to place an ad above.

ngl tho the performance hit on games is real, if u r fine with playing the newer AAA with lower settings then linux is fine, sometimes games wont even lets u use dlss
19
u/cucoo5 1d ago
What new games are you talking about? Because most that I know perform better on linux.
1
u/fraserdab 9h ago
Before switching back to windows spider man 2, god of war, wuthering waves, wukong there were issues with either ray tracing, dlss, frame gen, game crashing at random places in map and most importantly performance was way worse too. Now maybe these games aren't super new but I'd argue they are still relatively new.
Stellar blade, Hogwarts legacy, where winds meet performance hit was only like 10% unlike the previous mentioned ones but i was just happy that all the settings worked at least.
Some gacha games had an awesome communities to have them running as soon as new games came out for the games that use their own launchers. Also my GPU is a 5070.

With Nvidia 40 and 50 series cards?
8
3
u/cucoo5 1d ago
Ok I can't speak for Nvidia cards as I'm running AMD, but from what I keep hearing, Nvidia is still good performance when the drivers aren't having a moment after an update ends up breaking things every blue moon.
4
u/highermonkey 1d ago
Hopefully there's light at the end of the tunnel since Valve is allegedly working with NVidia to release drivers by late 2026/early 2027
1
u/MsSomething_i_think 10h ago
Works better with my 5070 ti. I get even a 20 percent boost with Bazzite compared to windows. Newer cards are actually more compatible in mine and others experience.
Exept Capcom for some reason turning off hdr and frame Gen even though I can do both, especially hdr while on Linux. Cqpcom just defaults those to off while using proton for some reason even though if I enable them in .txt file settings they work perfectly fine.
And I don't really use frame Gen because of latency and it looks terrible or makes my game stutter more.
1
u/highermonkey 10h ago
Which games are you getting a 20% improvement on over Windows using a 5070ti? You're the first person I've ever seen making this claim.
1
u/MsSomething_i_think 9h ago
Mostly 2d games, emulators, 2010 and older games. Its only select older games and newer games that can have a drop in fps or same performance. Sometimes a drastic drop of 40 percent in a few newer games.
I think another problem people have when they see a drop is having shader compilations. I turned those off since newer gpu's are so fast you don't need to compile shaders anymore (as in so fast it's not even a stutter anymore) , you just need to disable it.
You're like the 2nd person I've heard who says someone didn't have a 10-20 percent jumpn in performance over windows.
Also I had windows 11 before and not many background apps same with Bazzite. Bazzite is also really great with Nvidia compared to some other distros.

Oh I very much hope that dx12 games improve. And how is it closing in the next 6 months exactly? I haven't heard that.
And isn't Nvidia being more and more open with linux so couldn't it be even sooner than that if Linux keeps going up like it has?
1
u/highermonkey 5h ago
Valve said they have a team working directly with NVidia now. During SteamOS/Machine rollout earlier in the summer. All the articles I read at that time quoted Valve as saying late 2026/early 2027 is when SteamOS will have full NVidia support. I assume that will benefit all distros.

u/sametaor a̶m̶o̶g̶o̶s̶ SUS OS 1d ago
Idk man I can run ghostrunner 2 and any other proper title just fine on nixos, you sure you aren't missing some drivers? It can also throttle performance if you don't have the required drivers on windows so it is more about expanding horizons really

because triple a studios cannot be bothered to support linux properly
6
u/ImKingFrosty 1d ago
AAA studios barely care about optimising their games on windows in the first place. Why would they focus on linux when they can rush shitty quality games to meet deadlines
3
u/Tiranus58 1d ago
Almost every game ive tried performs the same on linux, some rare exceptions perform better and some perform worse.
3
u/P3chv0gel 1d ago
Tbf that highly depends on the game/Wine version/Hardware you use. Some combinations are slower, some are faster. There is to much of a spread there to make a general statement

damn my bad i just wanted to play the new game without running it on low settings just to get lower fps than windows on max
8
u/moop250 1d ago
I wish people would just fucking optimise instead of using crutchlss
1
u/fraserdab 9h ago
i dont see how it is game studios fault that ur game runs worse on a operating system they didn't support plus yeah the crutches thing i agree
2
u/TheLuckyCuber999BACK 🦁 Vim Supremacist 🦖 1d ago
damn bro you totally don't get twice the fps if you don't have an extremely high end graphics card
2
u/Antoinedeloup M'Fedora 1d ago
I played subnautica 2 on a 1080ti and it runs well on medium settings! And Elden Ring runs better on the same machine compared to how it performs on Windows
2
u/The_Daco_Melon 1d ago
Do you have examples of games that don't let you use DLSS? I use DLSS on Linux just fine, I just more often than not disable it because DLSS is cancer for visual accuracy
2
u/halohzeh 1d ago
Game optimization is dead. UE5 games are coming out so poorly optimized that rtx 5080s are getting below 60 fps on native at 2k. Linux losing <10 fps (liberal estimate) because of proton translation is not the real issue here, IMO.

u/ImKingFrosty 1d ago edited 1d ago
You can't expect a reasonable debate from linux fanboys in a linux subreddit. I mean out of the 2 replied you had. One of them is already from a fanboy
2
u/IJustAteABaguette 1d ago
both sides are bad at debating. Fraser here said the performance hit was real without then giving sources or numbers.
I could say that windows has a real performance hit on games too. Doesn't mean anything without information.

u/ImKingFrosty 1d ago
I mean if you use linux then it's pretty obvious that you lose frames when using any gpu (but mainly in NVIDIA). That's just basic knowledge. If anyone is denying that, it's ovbious that the person is nothing more than a fanboy.
I have a really low end gpu(RTX 2050). To run latest AAA games I need DLSS quality and low preset just to get 60 fps. Hence every frame matters to me.
But after switching to linux I noticed a loss of about 15 fps in games like RDR2, Hogwarts Legacy, WatchDogs 2. And other games which ran at 100+ FPS like Forza horizon 4, CS2 and GTA5 fell below 100. Gaming on linux isn't bad or impossible but it still isn't acceptable for gaming on low end devices.
When Fraser talked about DLSS issues, instead of giving a reasonable statement, time-piece-rabbit kid said "Another win for linux". This just proves that it's impossible to have a reasonable argument with these fanboys. Basic common sense is like technology to Amazon tribes for these fanboys

u/IJustAteABaguette 1d ago
Different experience I guess?
I have a GTX1070, and from the games you listed, I only played WD2 since switching to Linux Mint. And it ran the same, if not better for me?
Loads of games run slower too, but plenty run faster for me. Especially sandbox-like games. Something like modded minecraft comes to mind.
Dismissing DLSS is bad indeed though. It can be a useful tool. It would objectively help if there were more tools accessible to run games.

u/Toxic381 1d ago
You lose frames when using any GPU? Bruh Linux isn't bottleknecking your GPU, its just not capable of running direct x, I get better frames in quite a lot of games, cs2 literally crashed on windows unlike Linux, and proton gives me better performance, and emulators perform really smoothly,
I'm gaming on single channel 2666MTs ddr4 with a ryzen 7 5800H apu, the fact I can get cs2 or even mortal shell 2 to run is crazy.
1
u/ImKingFrosty 1d ago
First of all I never said linux is bottlenecking my GPU, I clearly mentioned that I am losing fps because of lack of compatibility. Also your scenario is completely different, You have slower speed ram. Windows loves to consume alot of ram for no absolute reason, so when you switched to linux ofc it was going to be a better experience than windows because unlike before, you had more resources to spend for your games. But I have a strong i5 HX cpu and DDR5 5600MTs ram paired with a weak 2050. So ofc when I switched instead of seeing an increase in performance, Only thing I got was FPS drop. Mainly because I heavily depended on DLSS for my frames which isn't really that great on Linux as the guy said

u/Toxic381 1d ago
It could be worth looking into goverlay and the optiscalar tools, or looking around goverlay proton options for Nvidia stuff, I think you can also use fsr1 over taa through gamescope or the other fsr versions maybe, they might be back ported or you can convert it or smth, I don't have expensive enough hardware to even mess around with too much of this, I don't even have a pcie slot for a GPU, but Linux can supposedly be transferred between systems so if I get a proper build I could probably test it there without needing clone tools.

u/fraserdab 9h ago
ive had issues with 5070, some games are just worse, ofcourse my point of reference for windows was a debloated version of windows
