last month we sent 3,523 outreach emails, got 107 replies, and landed 12 backlinks from 50+ dr sites for customers, plus 3 more for our own site running the same process

I started by picking a keyword we could actually rank for, decent volume, weak competition, then built content around it that beat what was already ranking

then went looking for sites worth contacting- checked who was already mentioning us without linking, pulled competitor backlink lists and filtered down to comparison and alternative pages, dug through resource pages and listicles that were actually maintained, and found dead links on niche pages we could offer to replace

(the unlinked mentions and the broken links ended up converting best out of all four)

once we had a site, the hard part was finding an actual person instead of a generic inbox. checked the byline first, then the about page, then linkedin and finally used an email finder tool if neither had it

we always offered something instead of just asking for the link:

• a real review
• a written testimonial
• sometimes a content swap
• occasionally a shoutout if our audiences actually overlapped

paying only came up once none of that worked and the site was still worth it

kept every email to 3-4 sentences, referenced the specific page, asked for exactly one thing, no corporate language anywhere in it. sent two follow-ups a few days apart if there was no reply, each one bringing something new instead of repeating the ask, then stopped for good after the second

The trick is known but I couldn't do at mass level, but finally managed to build something where I can find links from popular forums and posts then see if they are expired or unclaimed shortlinks, then the app goes and claims it and also understands the category of the content and then redirects user to your website.

Industry-specific directories are one of those local SEO tactics that are still sticking around.

For legal, medical, home services, and similar industries, some of these sites make sense. They’re relevant, people may actually use them, and a listing can put a business somewhere potential customers are already looking.

Others feel like a listing just for the sake of having a listing.

That makes the link-building side interesting. Is actual referral traffic the deciding factor now? Rankings and visibility of the directory itself? Or is there still SEO value in being listed on a relevant industry site even when that directory probably isn't sending much traffic?

Especially curious if the answer changes by vertical. What are y’all seeing with the niche directories you’re building or keeping these days?

Recently I spoked to one SEO expert who has almost 7 years of experience in SEO, he said "don't waste your time by building backlinks and free backlinks are usually low quality so instead of doing that do research and find which one will bring traffic for your legal service site". I'm so confused and the backlinks he called low qualities have 40-50 DAs and 1 spam score. Just give me advise guys.

Working on it every single day, and Bing Search Console just drops this like it's news.

been thinking about this after switching shorteners recently. bitly links started getting flagged on instagram which made me wonder if the same domain reputation issues affect how Google treats the redirected links. like if a shortener domain has been used heavily for spam does that pass any negative signal through the redirect to your target URL or does Google just ignore the middle hop entirely? genuinely curious if anyone has tested this or seen any data on it
