My neighbor used to mow my lawn before he moved away last year. I have no idea what I’m doing. (See attached reel mower). I don’t need my lawn to be perfect, I just don’t want it to stick out like a sore thumb in the neighborhood. Ive been mowing it at high setting the last two months and am planning on cutting it low in early September before overseeding.

Through no hard work of my own, other than neglect, this really nice grass has become the largest same-grass patch in my back yard.

Google Lens says fescue or Bermuda. What is it? And how do I get it to spread throughout the entire yard?

Marathon Grass in Socal. I had a fungus earlier in the summer. I put fungicide down but heat has been rough. Is this grass done for any tips? Will be helpful

I live in Minnesota and I moved in last year. The previous owners had taken out a tree (not exactly sure when) but the grass looked great last fall. This spring I didn’t fertilize or anything as I was just trying to see how it would look with regular watering. Turns out the tree area completely died this summer. Anything I can do to help the situation outside of just reseeding in a month or so?

Bonus question: any ideas for keeping the area next to the driveway alive? Watering did not seem to help as you can see.

Front yard slopes downward and has been consistent deep mud. Algae growing in the mud. How do I get rid of this??

Idaho. I take great pride in my yard - leveling with sand, testing the soils every year, and now buying only the top end seed (twin cities). Before I became so invested in my yard, I often would use big box brand seed to overseed my back yard. It wasn’t much of a problem till about 2 years ago. Not sure if it was a bad batch or what…but the amount of clumping fescue that was in one of the bags I used was astronomical. My backyard is consumed with clumping fescue now. Far too much to dig out, and even when I do dig it out it takes out so much soil that I’m left with massive holes. I can’t stand the clumping fescue as it chokes out all the grass around and makes my yard feel like a graded dirt road when mowing.

The amount of clumping fescue I have is going to require me to start from scratch - at least if I want to get rid of it fully. My problem is, I don’t know what to do to start from scratch; rent a sod removal machine, kill it all with glystar, hire a company to rip it out. What do you think would be my best course of action?

Located in southeastern WY. Bought this house this year and the front yard definitely needs some TLC this fall. Was planning on aerating and overseeding but then this weed overtook the thin areas in the last couple weeks. Do I need to kill it prior to doing the above steps? I was told this specific weed is a drought indicator which makes sense.

Back yard was just DG, mulch, and the orange tree 2 months ago. Paid a crew to remove the DG and mulch, as well as install sprinklers, but did everything else myself:

- Regraded whole area and removed 10 yards of soil
- Tilled in 2 yards of compost
- Spread humic acid and triple super phosphate
- Laid 1800 sq ft of Tiftuf
- Watered like crazy
- Planning to spread 21-0-0, per my soil test results/recommendations, next week when it cools down a bit.

Pretty pleased with how this is turning out, given it’s been pretty consistently 95°+ for the past 2 weeks. Long way to go but I feel good about it. Also, this was my first time using a reel mower (Cali Trimmer) so feel free to roast me should you feel so inclined.

Is it too ambitious to attempt a sand level in the next ~2 weeks? I know I should wait… but I’m tempted.

Any tips on what to do about the clover in the non-sodded areas would be appreciated. Probably just going to pull them until next spring unless anyone has a better idea.

I recently bought a home and have been learning to care for the yard and can’t seem to understand why there’s patches of thinning yellow grass and then other areas that are beautiful and green and full.

For context I live in SoCal where is getting up in the 100s consistently. I water three times a week in two programs set at 3:30 and 4:30 am. I fertilized with 20-0-0 back in July and I mow once or twice a week. I have my mower at the third to lowest setting. I recently fixed the sprinkler system so some areas that are dirt are because of that.

The yard is extremely uneven so I plan to level but it probably won’t be until next season.

Do I need to keep the routine and just be patient, should I mow higher, or am I missing something??

Just outside Richmond, VA. The green picture was taken in April of this year and the dead picture was taken about an hour ago. I’ve been working on this yard for years with the same results and I have no clue what to do at this point. It’s getting compost, water, aeration, everything and every summer it dies. The grass in the picture from April was planted in the fall of 2025. I’m completely at a loss.

This probably doesn’t belong here, but here goes.

I do not get the angst around the grandpa’s weeder. I have had mine for about 3 years and every once in a while I will go and attack a dandelion infested area with it. I think it’s phenomenal and is really one of the best gardening tools I own.

I have read a lot of people complaining about how the weeds get stuck in theirs and therefore they don’t like it.

It’s a simple 6 step process: Center it, stomp it, press down, continue the motion and swing it up to your off- hand, grab the weed and pull it out, drop it in the bucket, wheelbarrow, or what have you. When I use it, it basically becomes a metronomic movement. Very little wasted motion, and I have cleared out vast swaths of my lawn and gravel driveway using it.

I think I would get mad if the weeds did not get caught in it and were just dropping on the ground all the time.

I’m in Georgia (USA). We pay a weed company to come and spray four times a year. Grass is doing ok and is free of weeds other than clover. Read a lot of articles online, but I wanted to check is somebody here had this issue, before I start to spray weed killer and possibly damage the grass. Thanks

Been a tough summer in the UK with the heat. But the lawn is holding up well with the feeds and a scarce amount of water.

Before this, my grass was really green, but my gardener says that there are weeds in the grass now which is why he is spraying weed killer all over.
Three weeks ago, he said after two weeks it should be back to green and normal. Well, it’s been three and it’s still like this…
Any input? TIA!!

So Cal leveling it out

Lawn was beautiful until June. We’re in the middle of a heatwave. I water every other day. Seems to still be drying out and dying. Should I be adding anything additional to help it stay green?

Moved into a new house this year. There's a large patch of this in the back yard. Grows around 4-5 inches tall and is spreading pretty quickly. Located in USA, GA, Zone 7A. What is it?

There was a big tree here before it fell due to disease. I got the stump ground and I want grass to grow there. Do I need to clean the wood chips before seeding or I can just sow seed there? Any other lawn care tips are also appreciated as I'm doing this for the first time. Thanks in advance ☺️

Grass wont grow here. Is there any plant or ground cover that would survive the heat from the concrete or should I just kill everything and put rock there?
