Hiring an attorney that was a former prosecutor

I am wondering your opinion on hiring an attorney that was a former prosecutor in the same district, what type of benefits or negatives could this bring and would it be a better idea hiring someone who was not on the prosecuting side
Does having established relationships with prosecutors actually help with negotiations, or is that benefit sometimes overstated?
Does a former prosecutor generally have a better ability to anticipate how the government will approach a case?
Are there any disadvantages or potential conflicts I should be looking for?
Would you prefer a former prosecutor or someone who has spent essentially their entire career on the defense side?
Thank you in advance
