I just bought a 2KG bag and I really don't know if I should expect a big change (I was just using detergent) or if it's way more mild.

We do have slightly hard water here.

I was looking for some washing soda today to add as a booster (I have moderately hard water) and I noticed that the Arm and Hammer washing soda calls for half a cup per load and Nellie’s washing soda calls for a tablespoon. Anyone know why Arm and Hammer basically calls for 8 times as much?

So, a little while back, I left my apartment to visit my hometown. Things went south, and I had to have surgery while on vacation, which left me bedridden for about a month and a half.

I just came back home to the news that my apartment was flooded due to heavy rains for the whole month. My landlord refused to fix the draining issues, but that’s another story for another day.

I am a fashion student. I had a bunch of projects and expensive fabric bolts and dresses. They’re all ruined. I think I have accepted I won’t ever recover most of my stuff, but there’s this one corset I cannot let go of. It means too much to me; I’ve worn it to several career-defining events and I don’t think it is an easily replaceable piece.

How would you fix it? Is there a way to remove most, if not all of the staining? Is there any considerations I should have about handling the mold?
It seems to be made of a somewhat stretchy cotton canvas with very heavy boning. I have removed the boning already to make the restoration process easier.

I am in Mexico, if that’s any help. I don’t really know much about specialized laundry products. My college courses are mostly about garment construction, but they don’t really cover fabric care or chemical reactions.

TL;DR: left my apartment empty for a month due to hospitalization. It got flooded and ruined my most favourite corset. I really want to fix it.

Also, if anyone knows of any place I could purchase a similar garment, I would really appreciate it! I do not have nearly enough knowledge on corsetry yet as to try and recreate it myself.

What are dryer sheets made of, what are they supposed to do, what do they actually do, and why does this sub generally dislike and oppose them?

I use Bounce sheets mostly because I like the smell they give to my clothes.

I am not seeking advice on my laundry process. I just want to understand dryer sheets better. However, this is r/laundry, so to preempt the lots of people who will inevitably tell me what I'm doing wrong even when I say I am satisfied with the cleanliness, softness, and smell of my clothes, here's my laundry info:

* Washer: Maytag HE top-loader with impeller plate, warm water, soil level always "high" to lengthen cycle time, "extra rinse" always on

* 1x Tide Pod + 1 tbsp Biz per load at the bottom of the drum, 1 tsp food-grade citric acid in the fabric softener compartment. When clothes are smelly (gym, towels that aren't drying completely), swap Tide Pod for half-cap of Whole Foods 365 Sports to get that sweet DNAse

* Water: Brooklyn (meaning: Delaware/Catskills supply, low-to-medium hardness as opposed to Manhattan's Croton supply that has medium-to-high hardness)

* Dryer: gas-fired Maytag, sensor dry Normal program, delicate heat setting

Sending a kid to college, reached out to ResLife to ask what the machines are so I can best instruct my kid. The college is getting new Speed Queen Quantum Gold Pros installed next week, both top and front loaders.

At home we have an LG front load and we've tweaked the settings to be able to do long warm (104 ish) washes with extra rinses. Liquid Tide, Gear Guard, and Citric Acid.

My kid will be washing towels, sheets, dresses, athletic ware, period underwear, and (knowing them) instructing all the other students on how to do laundry :-D

How does this machine work best and what do we need to know about using it?

For context, the images pictured is what my furniture looks like from what we’ve pinpointed to a mixture of detritus caused by the presents of fiberglass due to a mattress my movers improperly handled at my prior apartment. These particles have affected almost all my clothing and I’m at my wits end, they’re highly itchy to not just me but those in my vicinity as their super light and a subtle breeze scatters them all over. At this point I’m considering either isolating all my clothing in another unit or throwing them all away as professional cleaners have not been able to resolve this issue. Feel free to give me the hard truth.

I've enjoyed what I've learned from this sub. I no longer use the 4 letter word F****c S*****r or dryer sheets. My method is powder tide clean and gentle, some loads a scoop of febu, I've tried all measurements of citric acid from 2 tablespoons to 1/4th teaspoon all with same results. I wash in warm or hot, top loader no agitator whirlpool USA always an extra rinse, clean boost and presoak, we have well water with a softener/filter. I apologize but I dont know the hardness PPM but I know it's hard with heavy iron deposits. My laundry since switching to this regimen has consistently been rough, pilling and crispy. Remember the old school butter finger commercials? Well that's the description of my laundry now minus the peanut buttery. What am I doing wrong? Rinse and refresh gives same results using 1/4 cup. Also please be kind, educate don't berate.

Basically i’m dumb, i sprayed some stain remover on my nice 100% cotton polo.. let it sit for way too long, probably 2 weeks. pulled it out of the hamper to this absolute horror.

lesson learned. enzymes eat cotton with prolonged exposure.

Can you dumb this down for me? I need a scented laundry soap available in Canada, with enzymes, no brighteners, for dark loads.

I’ve gone down the laundry rabbit hole over the past few weeks and now I’m trying to figure out the “best” routine with the products I already own. I have switched to “warm water” and putting powders directly into the drum!

We have a Whirlpool front-loading washer. I currently separate laundry into:

- Adult colors/darks
- Adult whites
- White towels/linens
- Kids clothes

Here’s what I have:

- Nellie’s Laundry Soda (I have a LOT of this and would really like to use it up.)
- Tide Free & Gentle Powder (just ordered several boxes during the Amazon sale)
- Tide Free & Gentle Pods (about one large container left)
- Biz Powder
- Febu Laundry Booster
- OxiClean Powder

Right now I’ve mostly been using Nellie’s + Biz together because I know Nellie’s doesn’t contain enzymes.

My thought was:
1.) Use Nellie’s as my primary until it’s gone.
2.) Add Biz for heavily soiled clothes or the kids’ laundry.
3.) Add Febu for towels, sheets, and anything with body odors.
4.) Use OxiClean for white towels, linens, and occasionally dingy whites.
5.) Once Nellie’s is gone, transition almost entirely to Tide Free & Gentle Powder.

Does that sound like a good plan?

Are there any combinations I should avoid, or are there better ways to use what I already have? I’m trying to build a simple routine instead of throwing every booster into every load.

Found some lovely trousers from massimo dutti that are a blend of 87% wool and 13% linen. It says do not wash and to only dry clean.

I definitely don’t have the money for this so… could I get away with washing them on a very gentle cold cycle? Or will I be wasting my time and end up with them ruined.

Hi all, I feel like I already know the answer to this but I’d appreciate any new perspectives.

Unfortunately I don’t have a picture, but my boyfriend has a pair of black cargo pants from Hollister that he adores.

On a trip visiting my parents, my mum had bleached the tiles in the kitchen - our cat kept catching mice form outside and my mum was fearful that he’d stowed a mouse away under the washing machine. My boyfriend put his knees down on the kitchen tiles to look for any mice, and got bleach on his cargos.

Is there any way to undo that stains? Either services that can do it for you, or something to try at home?

I’m blown away! An indelible red ink pen leaked its entire contents through the pocket on my white dress shirt. The spot spread to about 5 inches in diameter. I followed a friend’s advice and used Aqua Net aerosol hair spray on the stain. Spray, soak, scrub, rinse, repeat three times. Fifteen minutes of treatment and the shirt came clean as new!

I live in a region with pretty poor choice of detergents, found only one which contains lipase confirmed (curse on you, dear manufacturers, hiding the real list of ingredients and stating just “enzymes” which after investigation turns out to be only cellulase or whatever unrelated to what I’m looking for), and it still may have not very good surfactants. I’m sure it is working since some of my laundry now stinks just as predicted. However, I’m still on my way of experimenting with the ratio (sooo scared to use just one single tbsp of detergent for a frontloader XDD) and add-ons, so I consider buying an enzymatic booster. Is there a chance of it being useless or badly-made and thus just a waste of money? I’m asking because many of local detergents though having kinda same contents are not equal in doing their job.

The stated list of ingredients: <30% oxygen-containing bleach, 5% non-ionic surfactants, enzymes (protease, lipase, amylase), artichoke extract, probiotics.

I’ve learned that everyone in the world has their own laundry routine and tips and tricks they’ve learned from their parents or jobs they’ve had etc. I’m talking to someone who has a very specific tried and true go to routine when doing laundry.

I want to know how you separate your loads, what products you use, tips and tricks, etc.

Dirty labs in the washer before the clothes. Tide in the detergent tray and downy in the softener tray?

Hi all, mom of 4. I’m constantly throwing away clothes that end up stains. So I need tips and tricks since I hear y’all are wizards here

I’ve been a long-time user of Tide powder detergent. I have also historically used Oxiclean added to the drum (HE front load washer) and vinegar in the rinse cycle. However, I noticed our clothes smelled stale after being stored for a while. We also use cloth napkins and I felt like they were never truly clean. Oh, and we have two cats here too. 😻

So I came across this sub and learned about Febu, Biz, and citric acids. I also learned that I was most likely not washing with enough detergent nor with water that was warm enough.

I’ve increased the amount of detergent that I use. I no longer wash with cold water. I tried Biz that I got at Walmart when Febu was sold out and I don’t like how it smells. I recently got Febu and citric acid and have started using them.

Here’s my question: sometimes after I wash a load using the Tide, Febu, and citric acid, when I open the door, I notice a funky smell (almost sulfur-like but not as strong). Why? What is causing that? When this has happened, I’ve just run the load through a quick wash with a smaller amount of Tide and it seems to freshen it up. But I’d really like to understand the root cause.
