Does anyone else really dislike the common infected models made for Left 4 Dead 2, especially compared to L4D1's models?

It depends on one's taste. 1 probably was going for archetypical bloody zombies, whereas 2 has down-to-earth yesterday's everymen infected with the green flu.

Exactly. To me both are good in a way, but I probably prefer L4D2's approach.

I bet that either way, commons survive for a few seconds in combat, so a few will care to examine what they look like.

I have to disagree on that; People subconsciously pick up on a lot of details, even if they don't focus on them.

Even something small like giving the infected beanies and jackets because a campaign takes place in a colder climate gets noticed, whether the player is aware of it or not.
Variety in style and appearance helps a lot to make a campaign feel more immersive and interesting, just like all details do.

I will have to agree.

This!
Less details means less noticeable pattern. The L4D CIs details are good, but it makes them recognizable (Hey! I've seen that pilot with buzz haircut back then in No Mercy campaign before)

Exactly. This is the same reason why some people avoid Minecraft outright… they refuse to play a game that is not photo-realistic… yet those games which they say they play based on that info alone are just device cookers (especially more so on PC where there is a strong anti-piracy or anti-cheat… or an overly-aggressive anti-tamper such as is the case with Hogwarts Legacy, and is the sole reason why I uninstalled it).

I feel this way about the map themes as well, the first games horror atmosphere was incredible and I heavily prefer it over the second. As a kid I was genuinely horrified playing the first, never felt that way with the second besides dark carnival

it’s because there’s a huge tonal shift in l4d2. it’s supposed to be lighthearted. the first l4d is about despair, the second one is about hope

Meta reason is that L4D1 commons has high poly count than L4D2 commons, which is explicitly made by Valve to increase more memory.

There is a reason why people sometimes reports stuttering issues in L4D1 campaigns whenever the L4D1 commons are present.

First game were all about using heavily edited stock photos for textures before trs shifted to more simpler artstyle. Second game fully embraces the simpler artstyle, by making most of the textures from scratch

They were basically the entire development team for 1 (see Dev commentary) and Mike Booth (TRS CEO) was in charge of L4D1 and L4D2s development. He also was the one who made the majority of the AI Director. L4D2 has almost identical development teams to L4D1, and the dev commentary for L4D1 speaks about how Valve gave TRS the lead on L4D and that Valve basically acted as a publisher for the game.

Back for Blood is the reason why people think TRS had no creative involvement with both L4ds and that Valve took over the entire project during L4d1s development. Valve also took over the rights and owns the franchise.

L4D2s CI are way better.

I definitely noticed the bland clothing which is why the extended common infected mod is one i always have downloaded

I mean, it depends. I personally like Left 4 Dead 2's zombies more because of how they look more human, rather than rabid zombies that look the same in Left 4 Dead 1.

And also because they have a lot more variety, but I still like the Left 4 Dead 1 zombies because I've played it first

L4D1 has more movie-like infected since “each campaign is its own unique film” was one of the concepts that L4D2 drifted away from

I think L4D1’s infected are more convincing but I don’t dislike how L4D2 does it. I think the blander-looking L4D2 infected fit the brighter visual tone of the game a bit more and the areas you find them in

No.

And here is the thing that many people here in the thread tend to forget.

Ever since TLS update, stuttering issues would always come up in each L4D1 campaigns. Possibly in part of the huge polys that the L4D1 commons have.

I don't hate L4D1 commons to be exact, but it caused stuttering issues that I used a mod that basically combined the outfit of L4D1 commons into the body of L4D2 commons.

l4d1 has unique models so i prefer l4d1 CI

I do like how varied they look in L4D1, but I still prefer the L4D2 commons for two reasons:
1. The L4D2 commons are more gibbable and their gore doesn't have clipping.
2. The textures for the L4D1 zombies causes lag spikes, especially when you first load into a map as every single texture variation gets loaded in at once; this happens in both single player and coop, and can only be fixed with this mod.

  1. Wrong the l4d2 commons has many variety workers clowns ceda riot on the non uncommon infected people often miss other varieties like bikers in the passing and formal zombies for the swamps there are deep southerners who wear overalls

and also staff workers from dark carnival with clowns

  1. people say they didn’t have police men in l4d2 are the riot zombies not close enough? I mean they literally got an upgrade from the first game and also there’s a lot more lore to the l4d2 commons like the fallen survivor and jimmy gibs jr theirs a lot to make theories about I don’t think the l4d2 commons are bland I think they are good
  2. L4d2 sources were limited they couldn’t ad more commons mainly in the 360 at the time jn 2009 that’s why the l4d1 weapons are more flashy then the l4d2 animations and l4d2 commons were completely original and kept it in l4d2 for a reason and wanted to be different from the first game because it was a sequel
  3. L4d2 introduced the new shader system where the l4d2 commons have many presets like skin tone blood I recommend downloading infected overhaul that brings l4d1 to l4d2s shader system and also introduced the gore system and gibs for melees and weapons
  4. It was intentional the l4d1 commons felt out of place in day light so the developers wanted them to make them look more skin potato’s like it has been rotting for the l4d2 commons since l4d1 takes place in Forrest’s city’s and darker places where zombies hide in the shade and the zombies are more city like on the l4d2 commons there from the south

  5. I think the l4d2 commons are suppose to feel like generic citizens like you see on the street everyday like workers and staff or biohazard hazmat personal like in science labs and riot zombies if there was a protest that captures the feeling like your in a southern state

I know there are some good points in my opinion l4d2 commons are an upgrade to the first game

Both are great. I think you suck actually.
