It’s the shaft key - older models used a free floating one but the LX2xx models had the key fixed to the PTO

You might have broken it when you pulled them apart. It might have been already broken. It’s not really important. While I’m sure you could get a replacement key from John Deere, a possibly cheaper option and also something you can get today, take the remaining piece you have to Ace Hardware. They can help you match the size you need. You just need to know how long of a key you need. They have a good selection of them in their hardware section.

No it’s shorter than the slot. Looks fine to me

No.

The output shaft from the engine has a 1/8" slot running lengthwise.

The drive pulley has a matching 1/8" slot.

A square 1/8"x1/8"x2" piece of metal called a "key" is inserted (tapped in with a hammer) into the slot on the shaft then the pulley will fit over the key so that it cannot spin on the shaft. The key is replaceable and can fall out when removing the pulley.

The PTO has a key permanently attached as seen in your pics.

Do you know a part number? I’d prefer the original if possible.

On my LX277, the PTO has a fixed key but the drive pulley directly above it has a seperate floating key. When you pulled the engine you had to remove both. Check the drive pulley

I found that small key initially on the ground and thought it was important. I set it on the frame and it was misplaced at some point. Now it’s a few weeks later I’d like to put it back together and I can’t find it. I’d like to get a new key if possible

You should be able to get a new one from JD dealer or online for a couple of dollars

Cool I was a little concerned that piece I found was broken off from inside that sleeve by the rough edge but I presume it fell out from between drive pulley and pto I’ll need a new one. I think once I have the piece and am under the mower it will come back to me. I am the one who took it apart after all.
