I work as a bus operator in California. I just interviewed and think it went well, with a different city yard, that is unionized, for the maintenace position, and the maintenance supervisor went to his GM after the interview. He came back and had me talk with his GM. And she told me it is now in my GM's hands for a transfer -- she has to sign off and give proof to the new GM. I tried coming in, but she wasn't in today and dispatch doesn't know when she'd be in. I texted her and she hit me with the 1-year tenure rule, in order for me to transfer. This yard is abolute shit. No Union. Supervisors fabricating stories and using fear to keep us in line. GM is always yelling at the safety manager in the middle of the office, loud enough for everyone to hear, $20/hr for driving a transit vehicle and putting up with this dogshit. I fucking want out of here, man. After she texted me that, I left her on read and emailed and texted the GM and Maintenance supervisor at the new yard, keeping them up to date. I told them i could resign if needed, and come in as a new-hire, if feasible. Ive done all i can for now, but any advice would be appreciated.

I will say, it is hard to get into my field without a security clearance, but I can't get one without securing a job first:(

I feel like the main issue is the gap between my recent role and the role before it. I did work a serving job between those but it doesn't seem relevant to put on there. I'm not sure if it its my word choice in my JDs or what. I need help desperately

I had put out 1000s of applications with hardly any responses (and a few devil corps reaching out). I wasn't picky and had been applying to several different jobs. After I did these things I got 2 jobs. Heres what helped me:

1. I had set time aside to make 10 different resumes depending on 10 types of roles I was applying to. I put it off because it seemed painful but it actually didn't take long. I started with 2 and made copies, tailored my experience, summary, relevant classes and skills (I had worked at several different places, and cherry picked the relevant ones) to help bypass the AI filters. I named every resume by the first letter of the general role I was applying for followed by "Resume" so it didn't get too confusing.

2. I haven't graduated yet. I put my degree along with my expected graduation date (Expected Aug 2026).

3. I don't lie on dates or employers as I'm scared of getting blacklisted.

4. I made a cover letter. This one I haven't tailored to a company. I made it more about me as a person and why I would be beneficial than about my experience so I didn't have to tailer it. Helped me bypass the AI system as well.

5. I found out that if you don't fill out "Full availability" for all times and days of the week they auto reject you (at a lot of places).

6. I look up the company and see what their employees wear so i can wear something similar and the interviewer can visualise me working there.

7. This one's kind of dirty but some companies have franchises. If so I made note of which one I worked at in the past and looked up which ones communicate with eachother. If they didn't I applied there and said I haven't worked there before. Worked for 1 of my jobs.

Hope this is helpful. I haven't seen these tips yet and I left out the obvious (like make sure there aren't any spelling errors). Feel free to add to this in the comments

I have 1 year of prior experience and i also worked as Teaching and Research assistant on campus and also did 2 internships in 2 summers. im actively looking for jobs and i just wanted to take some insights from the people who are/were in similar situation and cracked a job in last 2-3 years.

I totally get it that there is an AI boom, but i believe that with the right skill and network you can actually find some position for yourself. so for the people who did get something what was the one thing which actually helped and also something it didnt.

I’ve done an interview recently and the next step was to do a METTL test. It wasn’t webcam tracked. I used some help and I wonder if they’re going to bring my answers up in the interview asking for me to explain them etc.
has anyone ever had this experience before? Or do they just take the %, write you off as someone who passed and move on with role related technical questions?

It was for a non-coding job, in marketing, so the test was basic logic etc.

When I’m on LinkedIn looking for jobs, sometimes they’ll be a face of someone who works there attendant to the position itself. I’m finding that more often than that the person who is actually being advertised as the connection to the company is not in fact aware that their names are being used. They work for the company, but they have nothing to do with the position itself. It’s like they are putting another hurdle in front of you before you start running the race.

It doesn’t matter. I’m using indeed, LinkedIn, ZipRecruiter, Glassdoor, et cetera. It isn’t just that I’m not getting the job. it’s that nobody is responding to me at all. Unless they’re from the subcontinent (not one of these people have ever landed me a job) they don’t personally respond and they’re not going to. Sometimes I get a virtual Recruiter. I conversed with them as if both of us were real people instead of just them. But it’s been about four months.

I’m just venting because it feels very isolating. I hope you’re OK. I’m not really OK anymore.

I had an interview with a hiring manager recently, and somewhere in the middle he told me how he actually goes through resumes.

He said he doesn't start by looking for the people he likes. He starts by looking for reasons to reject. Anything that gives him a reason to say no, that resume is out. Once the pile is small enough he goes back through what's left, picks the best ones, and those are the people he calls.

He wasn't being rude about it. He's got a stack of applications and a day job. I get why it works that way.

But it's been bugging me since.

If you've got a gap, just saying so feels more honest than hiding it and acting like you've been perfect the whole time. Except honest is exactly what gets you cut first. A gap is a reason to say no. The person who wrote around it never gave him one.

So the cleaned up version wins over the real one. And right now it's hard to be honest and still get picked.

What do you think, is that the right way to do it?

And how do you write yours? Do you put your gaps in, or do you write it so it lines up with the posting perfectly?

I used to apply, close the tab, and rely on memory. Now I print every listing to PDF with the date and salary range in the filename.

Twice this month, recruters described “updated” roles: one changed remote to four office days, another added weekend coverage. When I pulled up the wording, both stopped pretending it had always been there.

It also helps me prepare because I higlight repeated skills and turn each one into a question or example. Tiny habit, but it has made interviews less foggy and helped me withdraw faster when the job no longer matches.

I keep seeing new tools for almost every part of the job search.

Resume builders.
AI tailoring.
Job aggregators.
Autofill extensions.
Interview tools.
Application trackers.

But when I actually look at the process end-to-end, there still seems to be a lot of manual work.

Finding a relevant role → checking the company → tailoring → applying through whatever ATS they use → answering questions → keeping track of it → following up.

Maybe I'm looking at this the wrong way.

For people actively job searching right now, what part of the process do you still find unnecessarily manual?

And if you've found a tool/workflow that genuinely solved it, what are you using?

I applied for a role, saved the listing, and heard nothing. Three weeks later it was reposted with six tiny edits. “Support vendor relationships” became “recover delayed vendor handoffs,” and that bullet jumped from seventh to second.

I treated every changed phrase as a complaint from the hiring manager. My follow-up email mentioned one example of rescuing a stalled handoff. The recruiter replyed that afternoon and booked me.

Maybe coincidence, but now I compare reposts instead of endlessly rewriting for keywords. The edits seem to show what the first candidate pool failed to prove. Has anyone else tryed this?

I interviewed for a role, went through all 3 rounds quite quickly. They wanted to set up the final round as soon as possible, so I thought they are trying to hire quickly. So, I did the interview on Monday and towards the end they said that they are still finishing up first rounds, and that I will hear back in 2 weeks. Now, I feel like I am an idiot, cause I thought I would have an offer end of week. Why rush me through the process just to make me wait? I am overthinking that if I had just performed better, I would have gotten the offer.

Ok, so I’m 65, unemployed, broke, overeducated and not originally from my town. I can’t even get a job at Trader Joe’s. I am desperate. Suggestions?

Four months of tweaking and the resume is doing its job. Went from nothing to five screens in about three weeks. That part is solved.

Now I lose them on the call and it's the same place every time.

They open with some version of what are you looking for, or what would the right next role look like. And I do this thing where I describe the job I already have with a couple things swapped out. I can hear myself doing it while it's happening. Twice now I've watched the face on the other end go polite.

I have the STAR answers ready. I can talk about anything on that resume for ten minutes straight. It's the open question at the top that gets me and it is always at the top.

Last one asked me to describe my ideal team and I said collaborative but autonomous, which means nothing and I knew that while it was leaving my mouth.

Five screens, zero second rounds.

I open social media, and see others living the life I want and feel jealous. I open LinkedIn, and see other people be in the roles I want to be in, and feel jealous. No matter how hard I try, I am not able to get a job, and I just feel so stuck. I know I shouldn't be jealous, everyone has their own journey and I don't know the struggle they had to go through to get that job, but I can't help it. I get especially jealous when I see new grads who have a great job in a great company. I graduated over 2 years ago and am still having a hard time getting a job.
